Departing from Darwin (Larrakia Country), the journey heads toward the wetlands region known as WakWak, located about an hour outside the city, a name associated with the traditional lands of the Larrakia and other local clans.

Here, the Top End’s remarkable scenery comes into full view, with chances to spot a wide variety of birdlife and apex predators like saltwater crocodiles. The tour continues to Kakadu National Park (Gagadju Country), located approximately 300 km east of Darwin. Next, visit Ubirr Rock, one of Australia's most significant Aboriginal rock art sites, to explore ancient galleries and gain insight into the Bininj/Mungguy people's traditions. Day 3 Kakadu National Park

Today is dedicated to further exploring the rich cultural heritage of Kakadu National Park (known as Gagadju in the traditional language).

The morning begins with a Guluyambi Cultural Cruise along the East Alligator River, which forms the natural boundary between Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land. Led by a First Nations guide, this immersive experience offers a rare opportunity to step ashore and walk on Arnhem Land, gaining a deeper understanding of ancient creation stories, traditional customs, bush survival techniques and the enduring connection to Country. Along the way, keep watch for abundant birdlife and the region's iconic saltwater crocodiles in their natural habitat.
Note: During April and early May, the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise is replaced with the Yellow Water Billabong Cruise due to seasonal conditions.

Later, the tour explores the remarkable Burrungkuy region (also known as Nourlangie), a site rich with Aboriginal rock art and spiritual significance. A guided walk includes stops at Kunwarddewardde Lookout, Anbangbang Billabong and Nawurlandja Lookout, offering panoramic views over Kakadu's diverse landscapes.

For those looking for further adventure, there is the option to extend the walk to the Naguluwurr Art Site, home to some of the park's oldest and most significant rock art. As the journey continues through these breathtaking escarpments, billabongs and woodlands, gain insight into the ancestral beings and creation stories embedded in the land and its art stories that continue to guide and connect the Bininj/Mungguy people to Country.

After another spectacular Kakadu sunset, return to the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel. Enjoy a relaxed evening at leisure, with the option to dine at Manjmukmuk Restaurant & Bar (not included, charges apply), renowned for showcasing local Top End flavours.

The scenic drive leads through the stunning landscapes of Northern Australia, showcasing the vibrant earthy hues of the bush. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including the Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo, Agile Wallabies, wild horses and buffalo.

At the historic township of Pine Creek (known to local Aboriginal groups as Binjari), stop to stretch your legs and enjoy a selection of refreshments, including the popular homemade ice cream loved by locals (not included, charges may apply).

After checking into your accommodation in Katherine, head to Nitmiluk National Park (the traditional land of the Jawoyn people) and Katherine Gorge (also known as Nitmiluk Gorge) for the 2-hour NitNit Dreaming Two Gorge Cruise. This leisurely journey offers a glimpse into the history and stories of this stunning area, gliding between 70-metre sheer rock walls with wildlife often peeking out from the shadows. Surrounded by rich creation stories, marvel at the breathtaking scenery and tranquil atmosphere. After the cruise, return to Katherine to unwind in comfortable accommodation before gathering together for an included farewell group dinner.

After this enriching cultural experience, stop for lunch at Top Didj Art Gallery, a contemporary Aboriginal art gallery where guests can explore local artworks.

The park protects a diverse range of habitats, from sandstone escarpments and open woodlands to rainforest pockets and spring-fed creeks. These ecosystems host native wildlife including agile wallabies, monitors, flying foxes, colourful birdlife and tropical plant species.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
The dry season is considered to be from May to October and is the best time to travel to the Top End. Most roads are open and the weather is reliable, June to August has the coolest weather. Temperatures range anywhere from 23ºC to 34ºC. It is recommended to wear sunscreen, take plenty of water and wear a hat for sun protection.

Weather
We always suggest referring to an online source for the most up-to-date weather information for your destination/s.

Dietary Requests
Meal options and availability differ between airlines and routes therefore not all dietary requests can be accommodated. If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.
