You’ll have the chance to walk among colonies of penguins, watch whales glide through icy waters and get up close to icebergs, glaciers and snow-capped mountains. Activities may include zodiac excursions, kayaking, hiking onshore, nature photography, taking a polar plunge or an awe-inspiring submarine dive.
When is the best time to go to Antarctica?
The best time to travel to Antarctica is during the summer months, when the weather is milder and the wildlife more active.
What is the weather like in Antarctica?
Antarctica is cold year-round, with ice and snow common throughout. Most tourist cruises visit Antarctica only during the warmer months. Summer From November to March, temperatures range from -2°C to 8°C. Winter From April to October, temperatures drop to -60°C or lower in some areas.
What wildlife will I see in Antarctica?
You will likely encounter several species of penguins, such as Adelie, Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins. Seals like Weddell, Leopard, and Crabeater seals are often seen lounging on ice floes. You may also spot Humpback, Minke and Orca whales during their migration, along with seabirds like albatrosses and petrels.
Will I get to go ashore in Antarctica?
Some of our incredible cruises include the chance to go ashore and explore Antarctica on foot. Please check your deal’s itinerary to see if this is included.
What type of clothes should I pack for Antarctica expeditions?
Pack layers, including thermal clothing, waterproof jackets and sturdy boots. Warm hats, gloves, and scarves are essential. Many cruise lines supply polar outerwear, including boots and all-weather jackets.
Do all TripADeal Antarctica expeditions include a cruise?
In all TripADeal Antarctica expeditions you’ll cruise in comfort on ice-strengthened vessels designed for polar conditions. Multiple cruise lines offer up to 5-star amenities with world-class dining, zodiac excursions, science labs, photography and lecture programs and more on offer.
What is the typical route for a cruise to Antarctica?
Many Antarctic cruises sail across the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula from Ushuaia in Argentina. Some extended itineraries may sail from Buenos Aires to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Elephant Island, the South Shetland Islands and beyond.
What can I expect from the accommodations on an Antarctic expedition?
Antarctic expedition ships offer up to 5-star cruising, with a selection of comfortable cabins. Options range from an inside and oceanview to balcony cabins and suites where available. Itineraries may also include hotel stays pre and post cruise.
Do I need a tourist visa for Antarctica?
No visa is needed for Antarctica itself, however, you may need travel permits for any pre and post-stopovers along the way. Please speak with one of our friendly team members to learn more.
What forms of payment are accepted while on tour?
There is no official currency in Antarctica. The US dollar is commonly used on most cruise ships. Additionally, you will need local currency for any pre or post-cruise stopovers in South America. Cruise ships usually accept major credit cards, although some cash for incidentals is advisable.
Why does TripADeal recommend tipping and gratuities?
Gratuities are often included in cruise fares. Tipping expedition leaders, guides and crew members is a way to show appreciation for their service. Although highly recommended, gratuities and tipping are optional and at your discretion.
