Birdlife is the main attraction on this lush sheep-farming island, where thousands of rams and ewes roam. Settled by British explorers in 1765, the island’s unique scenery includes the beaches at The Neck, which are filled with the cacophony of Rockhopper and Gentoo penguin colonies (King penguins are rare here and usually found on Saunders). You may also spot the pillar-shaped nests of Black-browed Albatrosses. Nine of the Falklands’ 14 endemic plants, including the Silvery Buttercup and Hairy Daisy, grow here and are a real treat for botany enthusiasts.

Saunders Island (Falkland Islands)
Black-browed Albatrosses soar above this rugged, weather-beaten island in the west of the Falklands, while Commerson’s dolphins swim in the waters below. With a sparse population of people and sheep, this inhabited island is also home to Fur Seals, burrowing Magellanic penguins, Rockhoppers, and Imperial Cormorants who roost in the jagged cliffs. Cliff Mountain towers above the dramatic coastal scenery, providing a striking backdrop. As you hike across the moss, keep an eye open for the pink-petalled Felton’s Flower.

Day 8 Grytviken and Fortuna Bay, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands

Grytviken (South Georgia)
Often called the ‘Galapagos of the Poles’, South Georgia boasts a number of landing sites home to half a million King Penguins and three million breeding pairs of Macaroni Penguins, the largest population in the world, alongside harrumphing Southern Elephant Seals. Among its remarkable sites is Grytviken, the historic whaling station where the legendary British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874–1922) is buried. A visit to his gravesite to offer a ‘toast to the Boss’ is a quintessential Antarctic tradition.

Fortuna Bay (South Georgia)
Fortuna Bay is a picturesque fjord located on the northern coast of South Georgia. This bay is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, featuring rugged cliffs and glacially carved scenery. It serves as a significant site for wildlife observation, particularly for King Penguins and Antarctic Fur Seals. The bay’s remote and pristine environment makes it a notable destination for adventure tourism; it is also famous as the penultimate stop on Shackleton’s historic traverse from King Haakon Bay to Stromness.

Overnight: Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva or SH Vega

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Right Whale Bay and Salisbury Plain, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands

Right Whale Bay (South Georgia)
Right Whale Bay is a prominent bay on the northern coast of South Georgia, known for its striking natural beauty and rich wildlife. The bay is named for its historical association with Southern Right Whales, which were once hunted extensively in the area. Today, it is a protected habitat that supports diverse marine life, including Antarctic Fur Seals, Elephant Seals, and various seabirds. Its scenic landscapes and often tranquil waters make it a notable site for ecological research and expedition cruising.

Salisbury Plain (South Georgia)
Salisbury Plain is a renowned expanse on the northern coast of South Georgia, celebrated for its stunning landscapes and vibrant wildlife. This area features a wide, flat plain bordered by rugged mountains and the Grace and Lucas Glaciers. It is particularly famous for its massive colony of King Penguins, one of the largest in the world, with over 100,000 breeding pairs. The dramatic contrast between the green tussock-covered plain and the surrounding icy peaks adds to Salisbury Plain’s breathtaking natural beauty.

Overnight: Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva or SH Vega

Day 10 Saint Andrews Bay and Gold Harbour, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands

St Andrews Bay (South Georgia)
St Andrews Bay, located on the northeastern coast of South Georgia, is notable for its spectacular natural beauty and immense wildlife populations. The bay is renowned for hosting the island's largest King Penguin colony, a staggering assembly of over 150,000 breeding pairs. The surrounding landscapes feature the impressive Heaney, Cook, and Buxton Glaciers, creating a dramatic backdrop for the vibrant wildlife, which also includes thousands of Southern Elephant Seals. St Andrews Bay’s unique combination of scale and scenery makes it a pinnacle site for any Antarctic expedition.

Gold Harbour (South Georgia)
Gold Harbour is a stunning bay on the northeastern coast of South Georgia, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and concentrated wildlife. The bay is framed by the towering Salvesen Range and the hanging Bertrab Glacier, which often calves directly into the sea. It is particularly famous for its accessible King Penguin colony, as well as significant populations of Elephant Seals and Gentoo Penguins. The spectacular scenery and rich biodiversity make Gold Harbour one of the most photographed and beloved destinations in the Southern Ocean.

Overnight: Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva or SH Vega

Day 11 Drygalski Fjord, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

Drygalski Fjord (South Georgia)
Drygalski Fjord is a dramatic, ice-choked fjord located at the southernmost tip of South Georgia. Carved by ancient glaciers descending from the island’s rugged interior, it is one of the most striking maritime passages in the South Atlantic. Named after the German polar scientist Erich von Drygalski, the fjord is renowned for its towering gabbro cliffs, extensive tidewater glaciers, and the frequent calving of icebergs that fill its narrow, deep waters. The harsh weather and heavy ice often found here contribute to its remote and untouched character. The surrounding area supports a rich sub-Antarctic ecosystem, where you may spot Snow Petrels nesting in the cliffs, as well as Weddell Seals and Chinstrap Penguins on the floating ice.

Overnight: Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva or SH Vega

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 12 Cruising

Days at sea are the perfect chance to relax, unwind and do whatever takes your fancy. So whether that is going to the gym, visiting the spa (charges apply), trying to spot a whale from the deck, reading a chapter or two, or simply topping up your tan, these blue sea days are the perfect balance to the green days spent exploring on land.

Overnight: Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva or SH Vega

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 13 Point Wild, Elephant Island, Antarctica

Point Wild (Elephant Island)
Point Wild is a historic and somber landing site on Elephant Island in the South Shetland Islands. It is world-renowned as the refuge of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s crew during the ill-fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914–1917). Following the crushing of their ship, the Endurance, 22 men survived here for over four months in brutal conditions, sheltering under two overturned lifeboats while Shackleton and five others made their heroic 1,300-kilometre journey to South Georgia.

Remote, icy, and perpetually exposed to the ferocious Antarctic weather, Point Wild remains a powerful symbol of endurance and leadership. Today, visitors can often see a bust of Captain Luis Pardo, the commander of the Chilean tug Yelcho, which eventually rescued the men on 30 August 1916. The site is also home to a thriving colony of Chinstrap Penguins.

Overnight: Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva or SH Vega

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 14 Danger Islands and Paulet Island, Antarctica

The Danger Islands (Antarctic Peninsula)
The Danger Islands are a remote and rugged archipelago located off the east coast of the Joinville Island group. They are known for their challenging ice conditions and dramatic maritime landscapes. Characterised by steep cliffs and icy terrain, these islands are a formidable environment even by Antarctic standards. They host a "mega-colony" of over 1.5 million Adélie Penguins, making the area one of the most significant avian habitats on the planet. Their name reflects the perilous nature of navigating these ice-choked waters.

Paulet Island (Antarctic Peninsula)
Paulet Island is a small, circular island distinguished by its cinder cone volcano and its stark, isolated landscape. The island is world-renowned for its massive colony of approximately 100,000 pairs of Adélie Penguins, which thrive in this extreme environment. Beyond its wildlife, Paulet Island is a site of immense historical importance. I contains the ruins of a stone hut built by survivors of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1904) after their ship, the Antarctic, was crushed by ice.

Optional activity: Kayak in Antarctica
With the Swan Hellenic Expedition team (single outing, bookable on board).

Overnight: Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva or SH Vega

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 15 Brown Bluff and Hope Bay, Antarctica

Brown Bluff (Antarctic Peninsula)
Brown Bluff is a spectacular geological formation located on the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is a tuya, a rare flat-topped, steep-sided volcano formed when lava erupts through a thick glacier. The bluff features striking, rust-coloured cliffs that rise 745 metres above the sea. It is a premier landing site for wildlife, hosting large colonies of Adélie and Gentoo Penguins, as well as Kelp Gulls and Snow Petrels. The rugged beach, strewn with volcanic "bombs" (large boulders), offers an incredible landscape for hikers.

Hope Bay (Antarctic Peninsula)
Hope Bay is a deep indentation on the Tabarin Peninsula and holds a significant place in both natural and human history. It is home to Esperanza Base, a permanent Argentine research station that includes a school and a cemetery. Historically, it was the site of a dramatic survival story during the 1903 Swedish Antarctic Expedition, where three men were forced to winter in a tiny stone hut. The bay is also an Important Bird Area, supporting one of the largest Adélie Penguin colonies in Antarctica, with over 125,000 pairs.

Optional activity: Kayak in Antarctica
With the Swan Hellenic Expedition team (single outing, bookable on board).

Overnight: Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva or SH Vega

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 16 Mikkelsen Harbour and Hydrurga Rocks, Antarctica

Mikkelsen Harbour (Trinity Island)
Mikkelsen Harbour is a sheltered bay on the south side of Trinity Island, known for its stunning natural beauty and serene environment. Surrounded by dramatic ice-covered peaks and the Mikkelsen Glacier, the harbour provides a peaceful anchorage. Historically, it was a busy site for floating whale factory ships; today, you can still see wooden water boats and whale bones on the shore. Its icy waters and picturesque landscapes make it a captivating site for observing Gentoo Penguins, Weddell Seals, and occasional Humpback Whales that frequent the surrounding bays.

Hydrurga Rocks (Palmer Archipelago)
Hydrurga Rocks are a series of rugged, exposed rocks and small islets located in the Palmer Archipelago, near the northern edge of the Gerlache Strait. These rocks are named after the genus of the Leopard Seal (Hydrurga leptonyx). The area is a favourite for expeditioners due to its bustling Chinstrap Penguin colonies and the abundance of Weddell Seals basking on the smooth granite rocks. The elevated position of the rocks provides magnificent 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and ice-choked channels of the Gerlache Strait.

Optional activity: Kayak in Antarctica
With the Swan Hellenic Expedition team (single outing, bookable on board).

Overnight: Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva or SH Vega

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 17 Deception Island, Whalers Bay and Half Moon Island, Antarctica

Deception Island: Whalers Bay (South Shetland Islands)
Deception Island is one of the most incredible destinations in the South Shetland Islands, an active volcano with a unique horseshoe-shaped caldera. Entering the island requires navigating the narrow gap known as Neptune’s Bellows. Once inside, you will visit Whalers Bay, a sheltered harbour that holds the haunting remains of a Norwegian whaling station and an abandoned British Antarctic Survey base, both partially buried by volcanic mudflows (lahars). The dark, volcanic sands and steaming geothermal beaches create a surreal landscape, where brave travellers may even attempt a "Polar Plunge" in the thermally warmed waters.

Half Moon Island (South Shetland Islands)
Half Moon Island is a small, crescent-shaped island located in the McFarlane Strait between Livingston and Greenwich Islands. Known for its striking serrated cliffs and scenic beauty, the island features rugged, rocky terrain and is home to a thriving colony of Chinstrap Penguins, as well as Antarctic Terns and Kelp Gulls. Its picturesque environment, set against the backdrop of the towering mountains of nearby Livingston Island, provides a captivating glimpse into the continent’s unique ecosystem and is a favorite for photographers.

PACKING LIST
As Antarctica is one of the most remote, rarely visited, parts of the world, knowing what to pack for your voyage isn’t always easy. So, in case you’re unsure what clothes to pack for a cruise to Antarctica, below is a simple cruise outfit planner.

Plan ahead
It’s best to pack thoughtfully for Antarctica’s climate. Unless you travel there frequently, there’s no reason you’d know what clothes to bring on a cruise to Antarctica. Everyone experiences the cold (and warmth) differently, but it pays to bear in mind daily temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula can range from well below freezing to the upper 40°F/4°C. Plus, windchill can make things feel much colder, especially as you’ll be spending a lot of your time outdoors in places that are subject to strong winds.

Stay warm
When you’re thinking about what clothes to take on a cruise, it’s worth remembering that the outside temperature in Antarctica can feel much colder than the reading on a thermometer. So it's recommended you wrap up extra warm. Layering is a great way to do this. Wearing several lightweight, loose-fitting layers is better than opting for one heavier layer. This is because the different layers allow for pockets of air between each item of clothing, which provides extra insulation, and it means you can remove or add layers when your body temperature changes.

Choosing clothes
A lot of the action on an expedition cruise happens outside, so dress codes are very relaxed on these voyages. Pack clothes that are comfortable and easy to wash. And it pays to consider how you’re going to pack everything. For instance, do you know how to pack a cocktail dress in a suitcase? Is a cocktail dress something you’ll definitely need? Some guests find it helpful to choose their clothes, then go back and edit their choices after an hour or so.

What to pack
For the polar regions you’ll need casual trousers, jeans, long-sleeved t-shirts and a thin jumper or bodywarmer. You’ll be cosy and comfortable when you’re inside the ship, but it’s always good to have warm clothes handy for when something out on deck takes your interest. Waterproof trousers, to wear over your pants or thermal underwear, are essential for Zodiac trips and land excursions. You’ll need to bring a warm, windproof hat that covers your head and ears, and a collar scarf to protect your neck and chin from the elements. Polarised sunglasses will help reduce the glare from the snow and ice, protect your eyes from UV rays, and help you see the details of the Antarctic scenery better. It’s also worth packing mittens, ski gloves and insulated glove liners to keep your hands warm and dry. Also, you might want to pack swimming and fitness gear if you plan to visit the spa, pool or fitness centre. Evenings are informal, but maybe pack a couple of casual shirts, and skirts or dresses for dinner, and something stylish for special occasions, such as cocktails with the Captain. When it comes to footwear, keep it light and easy to pack. Swan Hellenic wil provide a pair of rubber Muck boots for Zodiac excursions and onshore landings, so a pair of lightweight trainers will be fine. Steer clear of bringing high-heels, especially stilettos, as the seas can get rough at times, and you’ll need to keep your balance.

Expedition extras
When you travel to the polar regions, a Swan Hellenic expedition parka will be waiting for you in your stateroom on the first day of the cruise. This is yours to keep after your voyage. Your parka is water and windproof, and features an adjustable hood with fleece lining for added warmth, a visor for optimal visibility in all conditions, and a high collar and elongated cuffs to give you extra protection. You’ll also receive a branded waterproof backpack, which will be useful for protecting your camera and any other electronic gear that you want to bring for shore landings.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
