The first port of call is Vardo and its iconic star-shaped Vardohus Fortress, built-in 1737. The northernmost fortification of any kind, it remains a part of the military to this day. Weather permitting, brave swimmers may want to take a dip in the icy Arctic Ocean (strictly optional, of course!).

Cruise Norway’s coastline to arrive in the small port of Batsfjord in the evening and then on to Berlevag. You might be able to make out Mount Tanahorn to the west, or see Kjolnes Lighthouse blinking atop a cliff overlooking the Barents Sea. These two idyllic ports are home to Norway’s most famous male choir, comprising local fishermen. Lofoten is known for its natural beauty, steep mountains, wilderness and picturesque fishing villages. After a short stop at the tiny village of Risoyhamn, you'll continue to Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten began in 1893.

Continuing south, it will look like you're headed straight into a mountain, you are in fact sailing through a passage into the narrow Raftsund, flanked by peaks rising 1000 metres out of the sea.

Another highlight is sailing past the Seven Sisters mountain range. It is easy to see how the peaks influenced ancient legends. The story goes that seven beautiful troll sisters were caught out at sunrise and turned to stone, thus creating the seven beautiful mountaintops. Even though we’re south of the Arctic Circle, there may still be good opportunities to see the northern lights.

This afternoon, the ship enters the Lofoten archipelago. The 1,000 metre-high Lofoten Wall is a stunning sight stretching for miles on the horizon. First, you will head to the Janiskoski rapids along the Juutua River to admire their natural beauty. In winter, the rapids are an impressive spectacle as they flow thunderously through the snow-covered landscape. The stark contrast between the icy water, thick layers of ice, and snow-laden forests creates a remarkable photo opportunity, often bathed in picturesque sunlight.

You will also explore Siida, the Sami Museum, featuring both indoor and outdoor exhibits packed with insights into Sami culture, history, and nature. In the evening, you will set off on a snowmobile ride out onto Lake Inari to try your hand at ice-fishing.

Overnight: Wilderness Hotel or similar, Saariselka, Finland

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch

Day 16 Aurora Hike - Saariselka, Finland

Today is yours to explore the small village of Saariselka at leisure, or why not try the toboggan near the hotel, or one of the many optional excursions on offer.

This evening, after an included dinner at the hotel, enjoy a gentle guided hike into the beautiful Urho Kekkonen National Park. The trail is easy to walk, making it a relaxing start to our northern lights adventure. We arrive at the cozy Aurora Hut, where our guide hosts an inspiring aurora workshop.

We get to admire stunning photographs of the northern lights and listen to fascinating stories and facts about this magical phenomenon. And if luck is on our side, we may even step outside to witness the aurora shimmering across the night sky.

Day 17 Santa Claus Village & Glass Igloo - Rovaniemi - Sinetta, Finland

Today, after breakfast, you'll travel south towards Rovaniemi, the home of Santa Claus. En-route, stop at the small town of Sodankyla, and view the historic Sodankyla Old Church before continuing to Santa Claus Village.

Tick the big one of your childhood bucket list when you visit the Santa Claus Village and meet the jolly old man in the red suit. You'll have ample time to explore before travelling on to Sinetta and a big adult bucket list experience, a night at the Arctic Snowhotel with its glass igloos.

Enjoy the evening at leisure, with optional tours like an Aurora Photography excursion, snowshoeing or an e-snowmobile ride (all weather permitting).

Meals included: Breakfast; Dinner

Day 18 Husky Experience - Sinetta - Rovaniemi (Lapland), Finland

Today you will be transferred to your hotel in Rovaniemi. This Arctic city has an intriguing history, having grown to prominence in the 19th century due to the Lapland gold rush. The city was rebuilt after World War II, and its footprint was redesigned in the shape of a reindeer’s head.

Besides reindeer, another iconic Lapland animal is the husky. In the afternoon, take a tour of a husky dog kennel and meet the friendly, furry residents. Enjoy lunch at the kennel. Learn about the long relationship these dogs have with the local people, and find out how they’re reared to become as fit and as hardy as they are.

After spending some time with the dogs, enjoy a thrilling husky-drawn cart or sled ride through the Lapland wilderness.

Enjoy the rest of your afternoon and evening at leisure. You may wish to participate in one of the many excursions or just relax and keep your eyes on the skies.

Please note:

  • For animal welfare reasons, the husky cart tour operates when the temperature is 10°C or colder. When there is enough snow coverage to use sleds the program changes into a 4 km safari with a sled.
  • The schedule of the program will stay the same with either a cart or sled subject to snow coverage.

Overnight: Original Sokos Hotel or similar, Vaakuna, Rovaniemi, Finland

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch

Day 19 Train Journey - Rovaniemi - Helsinki, Finland

Widely regarded as one of the world’s best cities to live in, Helsinki is vibrant and colourful, and offers a delicate balance of historic architecture and contemporary living. The city is also known for its incredible natural scenery, with countless nature trails nearby.

Enjoy a farewell dinner with your tour guide and fellow travellers, as you share stories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Cruise

Please note: Hurtigruten reserves the right to substitute a vessel of similar size and materially the same (or better) quality for the cruise if required.

Hurtigruten Coastal Express: Ship Overview
Your voyage will be aboard a vessel from Hurtigruten's Coastal Express fleet, which operates year-round as an authentic lifeline for Norway, transporting local passengers, freight, and cars along 34 ports. This unique role provides a non-traditional, immersive travel experience focused on the destination.

Key Features Common to All Coastal Express Ships:
Authentic Working Vessels : Unlike a traditional cruise ship, the Coastal Express is a vital part of Norwegian infrastructure. This means you will experience a relaxed, informal atmosphere alongside local life, prioritising the culture and scenery of the coast.
Optimal Northern Lights Viewing : All ships are perfectly equipped for viewing the Aurora Borealis. They feature expansive observation decks, large windows, and panorama lounges to maximise visibility. To ensure you don't miss a display, an Aurora Alert service is available in your cabin to notify you of sightings, even late at night.
Focus on Scenery and Education : A dedicated Hurtigruten Guide Team is onboard every ship to provide lectures, presentations, and activities that enrich your journey with insights into the geography, history, and wildlife of the region.
Norway's Coastal Kitchen : Dining is a highlight, featuring local, seasonal ingredients sourced from suppliers along the route each day, offering an authentic taste of Norway.

The ships in this fleet (including MS Nordnorge, MS Nordkapp, MS Nordlys, MS Richard With, MS Kong Harald, MS Polarlys, MS Vesteralen, and MS Midnatsol) vary slightly in their interior design and the date of their latest refurbishment, but all deliver the same authentic Coastal Express experience.

Dress Code
You’ll be glad to hear that the dress code on this ship is casual and there’s no need to pack formal attire for dinner. The weather in Norway can vary during your voyage, even during the day. We recommend you bring multiple layers of clothing, enabling you to adapt to the changes in temperature.

Clothing
• Warm under-layers and mid-layers: It is much better to wear a number of thin layers than just a few thick ones. The air trapped in between thin layers warms to your body’s temperature and acts as valuable insulation.
• Woollen sweater or fleece: This should go over your under and mid-layers.
• Wind and waterproof jacket and trousers: Outer layers should be wind and waterproof to adapt to the changing conditions on the Norwegian coast.
• Footwear: You'll need a pair of worn-in walking boots to use outdoors, as well as some casual shoes for use onboard.
• Cotton socks: Pack an extra pair or two in your rucksack if you’re going out snowmobiling or dog sledging and your feet become damp or wet.
• Swimwear: If you intend to use any sauna or hot tub facilities, you will need to pack a swimsuit.

Seasonal Packing
Spring (cover all bases) (March)
As you are likely to encounter three seasons during one sailing in spring, it’s important to pack well and layer up. We advise bringing a woollen jumper, warm socks, a thick scarf, winter boots, warm, waterproof trousers and jacket, a hat and gloves.

Autumn (multiple layers) (September - November)
While the sun may be shining, you can also expect cooler weather during the autumn months. Make sure to pack thin layers and some warm clothes – a woolly jumper, wind and waterproof jacket and trousers, a hat, gloves and light hiking boots.

Winter (wrap up warm) (December - February)
It can get very cold along the coast during winter, so we recommend you pack base and mid layers, as well as a thick winter jacket, wool or fleece hat, balaclava/buff, gloves, woolly jumper, scarf, winter boots, and pull-on spikes (for sale on board). And remember the layer principle: it is much better to wear a number of thin layers than just a few thick ones. In very cold weather, it’s a good idea to wear two pairs of gloves – one thick pair of mitts (mitts don’t separate the fingers so they keep your hands warmer) and a thin pair of gloves underneath that allow you the use of your fingers. If you’re prone to cold extremities, you might also want to buy some carbon hand and foot warmers, which are available from most good outdoor shops.

Hurtigruten's northern lights promise

The beautiful Aurora Borealis is Mother Nature’s ultimate light show. No trip to the Arctic Circle is quite complete without experiencing this highlight at least once on your journey. If the Northern Lights do not appear on your voyage to Norway, you will receive another 6 or 7-day Classic Voyage free of charge from Hurtigruten. The promise is applicable on departures between 20 September 2027 and 31 March 2028.

Terms & Conditions
A Northern Lights Occurrence is defined as a sighting from the ship which is recorded by the ship’s deck officers and which is announced to passengers on board. An occurrence can last anything from a few minutes to a matter of hours, and the ship’s decision as to whether the northern lights occurred is final.

Hurtigruten hopes that you will experience seeing the northern lights while on your Classic Roundtrip Voyage, Voyage of Discovery or North Cape Express, although they cannot be held responsible if you don’t. Hurtigruten does, however, promise that in the event of there being no Northern Lights Occurrence as defined above on these voyages, they will invite you back to cruise with them once more, subject to the Terms and Conditions below.

• This offer applies to all new bookings of voyages of 11 days or more along the Norwegian coast aboard The Coastal Express and The North Cape Line, departing between 20 September 2027 and 31 March 2028.
• Hurtigruten announce occurrences of the Northern Lights on board the ship and you have the option of announcements direct to your cabin or suite. We hope that you will experience seeing the Northern Lights whilst on your voyage with us of 11 days or more, but we cannot be held responsible if you don’t.
• Hurtigruten reserves the right to withdraw or amend the offer at any time. Please check at the time of booking as to the current status of the offer. The offer must be claimed and booked within 28 days from your return date. A choice of departure dates will be given.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

OTHER
Mobility:
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

A moderate level of fitness will be required.

Expect a moderate pace of touring with a focus on guided tours that may include full days with extended activity, guided city tours or nature walks. You will require a general level of fitness for unassisted navigation of stairs and inclines, longer distances with possible periods of standing when visiting sites, walking on sloping, uneven ground or elevations. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance.

Please note: Many areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, where the unassisted use of personal walking sticks and other aids may be required. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.
Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Yellow Fever:
A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate upon arrival.
You must check with your doctor well before leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Wildlife sighting:
TripADeal cannot guarantee animal sightings on tour. Wildlife are unpredictable and factors such as weather conditions, predatory fear and animal movements can impact sightings.

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

A tourist visa is generally not required in Europe for stays of up to 90 days when travelling on an Australian passport.

European Union Entry/Exit System (EES)
From October 12, 2025, a new European Entry System (EES) replaced the manual passport-stamping process for non-EU travellers. Upon arrival in the Schengen area, Australian and New Zealand passport holders will have their fingerprints recorded and a photograph taken. Their entry and exit dates will be electronically registered. No previous action is required, but please be aware of longer wait times at border entry. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of all the European countries (Schengen area) using the system.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)
As an extension of the EES implementation introduced in 2025, ETIAS travel authorisation is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries, including Australian and New Zealand citizens, that will be introduced in 2026. We advise you to monitor smartraveller.gov.au closer to your departure to ensure you are up to date on the requirements at the time of entry.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
