It is easy to see how the peaks influenced ancient legends. The story goes that seven beautiful troll sisters were caught out at sunrise and turned to stone, thus creating the seven beautiful mountaintops. The ship will then continue to Finnsnes which connects the beautiful island of Senja via the impressive Gisund Bridge. Then, sail to the historic Arctic exploration capital of Tromso where you’ll have four hours to explore the city or join an optional excursion. Along the waterfront you’ll find Polaria, a centre exhibiting environmental research in the Arctic with a small aquarium. Take your pick from the many shops and restaurants in the city centre, including Mack Brewery and favourite local watering hole Olhallen pub. There are also cafes offering delicious cinnamon buns where baristas create innovative coffee art. Across the fjord from where the ship docks, you should be able to see the iconic Arctic Cathedral with its beautiful stained-glass mosaic. Leaving Tromso in the early evening, you head north for the trading post of Skjervoy, founded in 1622. On the way, pass the Lyngen Alps which rise majestically from the sea.

Overnight: Hurtigruten Coastal Express Ship

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 11 Norway's Northern Frontier - Honningsvag

The ship makes early morning stops in the town of Hammerfest and at Havoysund before arriving at Honningsvag mid-morning. This is the portal to the North Cape where a globe monument marks the top of continental Europe. An optional excursion will take you to North Cape from Honningsvag by bus, passing herds of reindeer on the way, depending on the season. The ship continues north. Near the entrance of Kjollefjord village, look out for the striking, building-like rock formation Finnkirka, an ancient sacrificial site once used by the indigenous Sámi. You reach Mehamn, in the evening. If visiting in the months of February and March, you might spot tons of cod drying on outdoor wooden racks called hjell, mainly destined for export. The ship then sets off for Berlevag. On the way, we pass the tall Slettnes Lighthouse, the northernmost mainland lighthouse on Earth.

Optional Activity: Shore Excursion Bundle
The North Cape:
Travel by bus above the 71st parallel to North Cape that rises 307 metres from the ocean, right at the top of Europe. Gaze in awe at the stark yet beautiful scenery as you stand at continental Europe’s most northerly point, casting your eyes over the sea towards the North Pole. In wintertime, the unspoilt white plains and snow-capped mountains will reflect the soft Arctic light. Don’t forget the obligatory photo or that all-important selfie with the iconic globe sculpture that commemorates North Cape’s significance. Making a stop at the visitor centre at North Cape Hall, you’ll get to watch an impressive 180° panoramic film about the region through four seasons, learn more about the area’s long history through exhibitions in the underground tunnel, and pop into the world's northernmost chapel. There’s even a small museum and a souvenir shop.

• Transportation: Bus
• Duration: 3 hours
• Meals: Not included
• Clothes: Comfortable shoes, warm and windproof clothing
• Excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants.

At the newly renovated SIIDA Sami Museum, see exhibits and artefacts that document the rich culture of the Finnish Sami. You will enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before continuing to Saariselka, a small skiing village in the middle of the Finnish Lapland wilderness.

After a day of travelling, learning, and exploring, you’ll spend your first night in Finland. Enjoy the included dinner at your hotel.

In the idyllic old cottage, you can enjoy some coffee and chat more about reindeers and Sami. Weather permitting, enjoy an enchanting reindeer sleigh ride.

Day 15 Husky Experience - Rovaniemi (Lapland)

Today you will be transferred to your hotel in Rovaniemi. This Arctic city has an intriguing history, having grown to prominence in the 19th century due to the Lapland gold rush. The city was rebuilt after World War II, and its footprint was redesigned in the shape of a reindeer’s head. Besides reindeer, another iconic Lapland animal is the husky. In the afternoon, take a tour of a husky dog kennel and meet the friendly, furry residents. Enjoy lunch at the kennel. Learn about the long relationship these dogs have with the local people, and find out how they’re reared to become as fit and as hardy as they are. After spending some time with the dogs, enjoy a thrilling husky-drawn cart or sled ride through the Lapland wilderness. Once it’s over, you can enjoy a snack and a hot drink around the roaring fire.

Day 16 Rovaniemi Free Day

After breakfast enjoy a day to yourself to explore more of Rovaniemi. Your tour leader can recommend a range of exciting additional excursions or things to see and do in the area. Why not make a visit to Jatkankynttila bridge to take photos of Finland’s first suspension bridge. It stands prominently over Kemijoki river with the lamps at the top of its two pillars resembling glowing braziers. You’ll also not want to miss the Aalto Centre, a complex of public buildings designed by famous Finnish modernist architect Alvar Aalto. Each of the three buildings is inspired by Finnish culture and nature. Even the five arterial roads are arranged in the shape of a reindeer’s antlers. There’s also the forest-themed Pilke Science Centre and Korundi House of Culture to lose yourself in. Similarly, Ranua Zoo is home to various Arctic fauna, but all bow in respect to the resident polar bears and Finnish brown bears.

Cruise

Please note: Hurtigruten reserves the right to substitute a vessel of similar size and materially the same (or better) quality for the cruise if required.

Hurtigruten Coastal Express: Ship Overview
Your voyage will be aboard a vessel from Hurtigruten's Coastal Express fleet, which operates year-round as an authentic lifeline for Norway, transporting local passengers, freight, and cars along 34 ports. This unique role provides a non-traditional, immersive travel experience focused on the destination.

Key Features Common to All Coastal Express Ships:
Authentic Working Vessels: Unlike a traditional cruise ship, the Coastal Express is a vital part of Norwegian infrastructure. This means you will experience a relaxed, informal atmosphere alongside local life, prioritizing the culture and scenery of the coast.
Optimal Northern Lights Viewing: All ships are perfectly equipped for viewing the Aurora Borealis. They feature expansive observation decks, large windows, and panorama lounges to maximize visibility. To ensure you don't miss a display, an Aurora Alert service is available in your cabin to notify you of sightings, even late at night.
Focus on Scenery and Education: A dedicated Hurtigruten Guide Team is onboard every ship to provide lectures, presentations, and activities that enrich your journey with insights into the geography, history, and wildlife of the region.
Norway's Coastal Kitchen: Dining is a highlight, featuring local, seasonal ingredients sourced from suppliers along the route each day, offering an authentic taste of Norway.

The ships in this fleet (including MS Nordnorge, MS Nordkapp, MS Nordlys, MS Richard With, Ms Kong Harald, Ms Polarlys, Ms Vesteralen, and Ms Midnatsol) vary slightly in their interior design and the date of their latest refurbishment, but all deliver the same authentic Coastal Express experience.

Dress Code
You’ll be glad to hear that the dress code on this ship is casual and there’s no need to pack formal attire for dinner. The weather in Norway can vary during your voyage, even during the day. We recommend you bring multiple layers of clothing, enabling you to adapt to the changes in temperature.

Clothing
• Warm underlayers and mid-layers: It is much better to wear a number of thin layers than just a few thick ones. The air trapped in between thin layers warms to your body’s temperature and acts as valuable insulation.
• Woollen sweater or fleece: This should go over your under and mid-layers.
• Wind and waterproof jacket and trousers: Outer layers should be wind and waterproof to adapt to the changing conditions on the Norwegian coast.
• Footwear: You'll need a pair of worn-in walking boots to use outdoors, as well as some casual shoes for use onboard.
• Cotton socks: Pack an extra pair or two in your rucksack if you’re going out snowmobiling or dog sledging and your feet become damp or wet.
• Swimwear: If you intend to use any sauna or hot tub facilities, you will need to pack a swimsuit.

Seasonal Packing
Spring (cover all bases)
As you are likely to encounter three seasons during one sailing in spring, it’s important to pack well and layer up. We advise bringing a woollen jumper, warm socks, a thick scarf, winter boots, warm, waterproof trousers and jacket, a hat and gloves.

Summer (sunny attire)
Summer weather along the coast can be changeable, so in addition to T-shirts, shorts and sandals, it’s wise to pack a warm jumper, light jacket (water-resistant), thin hat and gloves, and hiking shoes. You might also want to pack an eye mask, to help you sleep during the season of the Midnight sun.

Autumn (multiple layers)
While the sun may be shining, you can also expect cooler weather during the autumn months. Make sure to pack thin layers and some warm clothes – a woolly jumper, wind and waterproof jacket and trousers, a hat, gloves and light hiking boots.

Winter (wrap up warm)
It can get very cold along the coast during winter, so we recommend you pack base and mid layers, as well as a thick winter jacket, wool or fleece hat, balaclava/buff, gloves, woolly jumper, scarf, winter boots, and pull-on spikes (for sale on board). And remember the layer principle: it is much better to wear a number of thin layers than just a few thick ones. In very cold weather, it’s a good idea to wear two pairs of gloves – one thick pair of mitts (mitts don’t separate the fingers so they keep your hands warmer) and a thin pair of gloves underneath that allow you the use of your fingers. If you’re prone to cold extremities, you might also want to buy some carbon hand and foot warmers, which are available from most good outdoor shops.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:

Visas

A tourist visa is generally not required in Europe for stays of up to 90 days when travelling on an Australian passport.

European Union (EU) Entry/Exit System (EES)
From October 12, 2025, a new European Entry System (EES) replaces the current manual passport-stamping process for non-EU travelers. Upon arrival in the Schengen area, Australian and New Zealand passport holders will have their fingerprints recorded and a photograph taken. Their entry and exit dates will be electronically registered. No previous action is required, but please be aware of longer wait times at border entry. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of all the European countries (Schengen area) using the system.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)
As an extension of the EES implementation introduced from 2025, ETIAS travel authorisation is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries [link - https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias/about-etias/who-should-apply#european-countries-requiring-etias] , including Australian and New Zealand citizens, that will be introduced in 2026. We advise you to monitor smartraveller.com.au closer to your departure to ensure you are up to date on the requirements at the time of entry.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
