Apart from big cats and precious flora, the park is well known for its healthy population of elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, mongoose and water buffalo. Day 5 Wilpattu - Sigiriya

After breakfast at the hotel, it’s time to travel to Sigiriya where you will visit the ancient Lion’s Rock Fortress of Sigiriya in the heart of Sri Lanka.

The 5th-century rock citadel of King Kasyapa isn't just a testament to ancient Sri Lankan engineering and urban planning prowess, it's a true masterpiece of art and culture. As you step through the colossal 'Lion Paws' which gaze upon the meticulously designed royal gardens below, you will be transported back in time to an era of ancient wonders. This UNESCO-listed rock fortress, encircled by imposing ramparts and moats, is often likened to the mythical 'City of Gods'.

One of the most captivating features of Sigiriya is its stunning frescoes, reminiscent of the Gupta-style paintings found in the famous Ajanta caves of India. These ancient artworks adorn the rock's surface, offering a glimpse into the artistic brilliance of the past. Wander into the museum downstairs for an insight into how the citadel floated above citizens and learn about the advanced ponds and irrigation that pumped water right onto its summit through an ingenious hydraulic system.

Please note:
• Make sure to carry a bottle of water and a face towel to keep yourself refreshed in the tropical heat.
• While the frescoes are a sight to behold, refrain from taking pictures as it is considered a punishable offence in accordance with the rules set by the archaeological department.

Overnight: Tropical Life Resort & Spa or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Sigiriya - Day at Leisure

Today is yours to enjoy at leisure or you can choose to join the following optional tours.

Optional Activity: Polonnaruwa City Tour
Rising with the decline of Anuradhapura, the city of Polonnaruwa remains superior proof of ancient culture and heritage blended with religious beliefs. Walk among the scattered walls of this UNESCO World Heritage Site which is dotted with stupas, resting Buddha statues, irrigation canals and carved Hindu sculptures.

As you stroll the medieval capital and crown jewel of King Parakramabahu I, take a moment to observe the relic house of Vatadage which boasts impressive stone carvings. Look closely, and you will notice a subtle Hindu influence on the architecture and statues found in Polonnaruwa.

Optional Activity: Minneriya National Park Jeep Safari
Experience an afternoon safari at Minneriya National Park which is set to be a serious rumble in the jungle. Spread over 8,800 hectares, it's a sanctuary for elephants as well as being home to herds of deer and ample birdlife.

The jeep will park on the bank of the reservoir and switch off its engine so you'll have the opportunity to see herds of elephants roll onto the grass-covered banks to feed on tender shoots. This is the largest elephant gathering in the world (over 300 at a time) so it's an absolute must-do for wildlife enthusiasts.

Please note: If Minneriya National Park is flooded during the rainy season, you will visit Kaudulla or Eco National Parks as alternative options.

Overnight: Tropical Life Resort & Spa or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Sigiriya – Dambulla - Kandy

After breakfast at the hotel, you'll proceed to Dambulla to visit the famed Dambulla Rock Temple.

In the city of Dambulla lies a hub that has been treasured by many kings since the 1st century B.C. Today, an icon in the face of Sri Lanka, Dambulla Rock Temple houses some of the most unique drawings in magnificently constructed five cave temples flanking the golden temple of Dambulla.

Observe how exquisite cave paintings along the walls shelter 150 statues of Lord Buddha and take a moment to look straight up at the gigantic Buddha statue glittering in gold, an important junction in the country's economic and cultural uplifting.

Afterwards, you'll travel to the hill city of Kandy and check into the hotel. As evening falls, you'll enjoy a tour of Kandy City. Last ruled by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe before it was brought under British rule in 1815, Kandy is the last royal capital of Sri Lankan kings and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that celebrates its culture, history and heritage.

As you stroll across this small lakeside town to the Kandy City Centre, you'll find world-class brands, a bazaar, an arts & crafts centre, a gem museum and a lapidary. Make sure to take in the dazzling colours as you glide through fresh fruits and vegetables in the Kandy market.

Overnight: Skyloft Hotel, Kandy or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Kandy – Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast, you'll depart for Nuwara Eliya which is Sri Lanka’s highest town and the heart of the country’s most beautiful region.

In the southern hill country, Nuwara Eliya sits beneath the towering Pidurutalagala Mountain in a bowl of verdant, tea-covered hills. Although the region was once occupied by the Kandyan kingdom, the town itself is of British creation as it was established in the mid-19th century as a retreat by Sir Edward Barnes.

Upon arrival in the afternoon, take a tour of a local tea plantation and learn about the tea production process of the prestigious Ceylon Tea brand. As you observe the hissing and swishing of machines, inhale the heavenly scent arising from these facilities and make sure to end your tour in style over a perfectly blended cup of pure Ceylon tea. Afterwards, enjoy time to explore the plantation at leisure before continuing onwards to enjoy leisure time in Nuwara Eliya or an optional tour of the Moon Plains.

Optional Activity: Moon Plains Jeep Ride
The Moon Plains used to be a part of a catchment area as a 400-metre-long and 30-metre-deep valley until the late 1990s. The scenery is so beautiful that you feel like you are in a different world. Expect a surreal experience as you explore the lunar-like terrain, surrounded by the beauty of Sri Lanka's diverse and picturesque natural scenery.

Overnight: Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9 Nuwara Eliya - Horton Plains

Today you'll take a packed breakfast from the hotel and proceed to visit Horton Plains.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a trekker's paradise and eco-tourism hideout in the heart of the isle. Painted with unending stretches of green pastures, it marks one of the healthiest wet montane evergreen forests in Sri Lanka. With an altitude above 2000 metres, the plateau sweeps to a robust 3169 hectares, sheltering flora and fauna varieties that may be found nowhere else on Earth.

As the tributary of Belihuloya, Bakers Falls, thunders down rocks, you'll head along the 9-kilometre trekking path across frost-covered grass to feel the icy-cold wind against your face. You may even gaze down World's End, a head-spinning 1,100-metre drop towards the southern end. Drive carefully through herds of sambar deer, shy to human touch and birdlife chirping across the plains. If you're cautious enough you may be greeted by the sights of a grunting wild boar, a pouncing fishing cat, otters or even the Sri Lankan Leopard!

Afterwards, you'll return to the hotel where you'll be collected in the afternoon to commence sightseeing in Nuwara Eliya.

Get your camera ready as you wind down misty steep roads that twist through lush green blankets of tea bushes in a cool climate. Augmented by an English countryside atmosphere, the city of light is studded with colonial bungalows, hedgerows and one of the finest 18-hole golf courses in the world. A hike through the green grass and along red brick walls can present breathtaking views of a buzzing countryside hamlet.

Enjoy driving through the green valleys of the hill country that are pierced by endless waterfalls and dotted by tea pluckers draped in bright-coloured saris, or rent a bike for a gentle ride along the banks splashed by the waters of Lake Gregory before returning to the hotel.

Overnight: Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 10 Nuwara Eliya - Ella

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Nanu Oya Railway Station in time for your scenic train from Nanu Oya to Ella. This train ride gives you an unparalleled view and penetrating glimpse of both the scenic beauty and culture of the hill country as you travel along. Upon arriving at Ella, you can check in and relax before heading to Little Adam’s Peak.

Despite the term 'Little', the area is named after the sacred Adams Peak (Sri Pada) where the footprint of Lord Buddha is preserved. Therefore, the mountain was named Little Adams Peak but is also known as "Punchi Sri Pada" as it stands at a height of 1,141 metres. On an easy hike up the peak, you'll pass through lush green tea plantations, waterfalls and paddy fields before experiencing a breathtaking panoramic view. After the hike, you'll be transferred to the hotel.

Please note: The tour vehicle will drop and pick you up at the departure and arrival train stations. Therefore, your main luggage will be transported by the tour vehicle.

Overnight: Ekho Ella, Ella or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 11 Ella - Udawalawe

Prepare for an unforgettable safari adventure! Udawalawe is truly the ultimate sanctuary for Sri Lanka's majestic elephants. Known for its exceptionally large herds, this park offers one of the best opportunities in the world to witness these magnificent giants thriving in their natural habitat.

Hop into a safari jeep, where you may encounter your first herd just moments after entering the park! While the elephants are the main attraction, keep your camera ready for other fascinating wildlife, including spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, wild water buffalo, and the elusive jackal.

Overnight: Athgira River Camp, Deluxe Tents, Udawalawe or similar

Day 12 Udawalawe

Rise early and visit the elephant transit home in Udawalawe. Established in 1995 and considered one of the most successful elephant rehabilitation programs in Asia. The home has rehabilitated hundreds of elephants back into the wild.

Following the visit to the transit home, return back to camp for your breakfast. Shortly after breakfast, delight in a scenic tour through fragrant cinnamon and pepper plantations, learning how Sri Lanka's world-famous spices are grown and harvested. This lush environment is a sanctuary for local birds and butterflies, enhancing the natural beauty of the walk. Conclude your adventure with a truly hands-on traditional cooking class, where you'll use the fresh plantation ingredients to prepare and enjoy a delicious, authentic meal.

Following the tour, return to your camp where you can relax and enjoy dinner in the evening.

Overnight: Athgira River Camp, Deluxe Tents, Udawalawe or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 13 Belihuloya - Colombo

After breakfast, it’s time to travel to Colombo where you'll enjoy a fascinating sightseeing tour.

Here, skyscrapers grow out of historic colonial-era districts near the port yet this modern metropolis never loses its old-world charm. You'll have the chance to visit the famous Pettah bazaar as well as Hindu and Buddhist temples such as the Gangarama and Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil.

See some of the city’s residential areas such as Cinnamon Gardens where you'll find prestigious addresses such as the Prime Minister's Office, Independence Hall, Colombo Town Hall and the National Museum as well as stately homes.

This streamlines tipping and ensures fair recognition for those who enhance your experience.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with two monsoon seasons so there is a lot of confusion about the best time to visit. The weather doesn’t run like clockwork here! However, there will rarely be weather so dramatic that it will stand in the way of a brilliant holiday with plenty of warm weather and sunshine. The temperature is constant at around 27°C on the coast, both in the air and the water, but it can get cooler in the country side (e.g., Nuwara Eliya can drop to between 15 and 20°C).

Weather
We always suggest referring to an online source for the most up-to-date weather information for your destination/s.

COACH TOUR
Meals:
For meals not included, the tour leader (when available) will offer assistance with reservations, suggestions and directions to local restaurants. It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements.

Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.

Luggage:
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

OTHER
Mobility:
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf.

Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

A relaxed level of fitness will be required.

Expect a comfortable pace of touring with a focus on leisure time and gentle activity. This may include city tours, the ability to walk up and down small flights of stairs and gentle slopes. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance.

Please note: Some areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, with personal walking sticks and other aids required should they be needed. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.

Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you. If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Wildlife Sighting:
TripADeal cannot guarantee animal sightings on tour. Wildlife are unpredictable and factors such as weather conditions, predatory fear and animal movements can impact sightings.

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.

Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Sri Lanka
A tourist visa for Sri Lanka is a strict requirement if travelling on an Australian or New Zealand Passport. You will need a visa in the form of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka.

Important:
Please check with the nearest Sri Lankan embassy, consulate or immigration department for the current tourist visa requirements and any updates regarding the e-visa for Sri Lanka.

Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with their respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
 • It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for Visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
