Overnight: Hotel Mystays Tachikawa or similar, Tokyo

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Tokyo – Mt Fuji – Matsumoto

After breakfast, drive to Mt Fuji’s 5th Station.

Located 2300m above sea level, this observation point offers a commanding view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below, making it a popular spot even for those who do not intend on climbing the mountain. It features shrines, torii gates and souvenir shops. Afterwards, continue to Lake Kawaguchiko, nearby in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, to admire the scenery as you enjoy a short cruise across the lake. The waters are overlooked by surrounding mountains, including Mt Fuji and Mt Komagatake. On a still, clear day, you can see a perfect mirror image of Mt. Fuji reflected in the lake.

Afterwards continue onwards to Matsumoto, check into the hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure. Matsumoto is a charming city nestled in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan, surrounded by the breathtaking Japanese Alps. Historically known as Fukashi, it flourished as a castle town, most notably around the magnificent Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's few remaining original castles and a designated National Treasure. The city's history dates back centuries, with the castle's origins in the early 16th century.

Today you will drive approximately 350 kilometres.

Overnight: Tabino Hotel Lit Matsumoto or similar, Matsumoto

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Matsumoto Castle - Free Afternoon

Step back in time on a guided tour of Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's premier historic castles, dating back to the early 16th century. Originally known as Fukashi Castle, its fortifications were first established around 1504 during the tumultuous Warring States period. The impressive five-tiered, six-story keep that stands today, earning it the nickname "Crow Castle" for its striking black exterior, was largely constructed in the late 16th century, around 1594, making it one of Japan's oldest surviving original castle keeps.

Wander through its iconic black and white facade as you learn stories of its feudal past, including its role as a strategic military base and the various clans who controlled it, from the Ogasawara to the Ishikawa and beyond, under the Edo Period Tokugawa shogunate. Explore the castle's interior, discovering hidden defenses and armory displays showcasing samurai weaponry, and learn about the architectural ingenuity designed to thwart invaders. Ascend to the top floor for panoramic views of the surrounding city and the majestic Japanese Alps.

The afternoon is free at leisure to explore Matsumoto.

Overnight: Tabino Hotel Lit Matsumoto or similar, Matsumoto

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Matsumoto – Shirakawa Go - Takayama - Kanazawa

Today is a fun day to visit the countryside of Japan to see how local people live.

First visit Shirakawa-go, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, it’s famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.

Afterwards, visit Takayama Old Town and walk along Sanmachi Street, which survives in a particularly pretty state with many old homes, shops, and restaurants. Takayama was once a bustling hub drawing expert artisans, farmers and merchants from throughout the surrounding area, and Sanmachi as well as Oshinmachi preserve the traditional aesthetic of this time. Enter this district, and you step into the closest thing to the Edo period outside of a historical drama.

Finish the day in Kanazawa where you will check into your hotel and enjoy an evening at leisure. Kanazawa remains an important city in its region and serves as the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture. The city boasts many historical attractions such as restored residences and districts, as well as modern museums. But Kanazawa's unchallenged main attraction is Kenrokuen, one of Japan's "three best landscape gardens" and by many considered the most beautiful of them all.

Today, you'll travel approximately 380 kilometres.

Overnight: Kanazawa Kokusai Hotel or similar, Kanazawa

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Kanazawa - Kyoto

This morning visit Kenrokuen, justifiably classified as one of Japan's "most beautiful landscape gardens" in Japan. Opened to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees which provide the garden with a different look for each season.

Kanazawa is home to 99% of all gold leaf made in Japan and today you will enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience attending a Gold Leaf Craft workshop and will see the gold leaf process and decorate your own items. Afterwards, depart for Kyoto and on arrival enjoy the remainder of the day at your own pace.

Kyoto served as Japan's capital and the emperor's residence from 794 until 1868. Over the centuries, the city was destroyed by many wars and fires, but due to its exceptional historic value, it was dropped from the list of target cities for the atomic bomb and escaped destruction during World War II. Countless temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures survive in the city today.

Overnight: Kyoto: Crystal Hotel Kyoto IV or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Kyoto - Nara - Osaka

Today, enjoy a half-day sightseeing tour of the ancient capital of Kyoto.

First up visit Kiyomizu-dera, one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It was founded in 780 and was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994. Kiyomizu-dera is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 metres above the hillside which offers amazing views across the city.

Afterwards, you will visit the iconic Temple of the Golden Pavilion, which is perhaps the most breathtaking in Kyoto. Also known as “Kinkaku-ji,” the temple’s top two floors are coated in gold leaf, creating a dazzling mirror image in the pond on which it’s built. Lastly, enjoy a walk at Ninenzaka, Kyoto’s best old street lined with historic Japanese-style buildings that typify Kyoto.

Afterwards travel to nearby Nara to visit Nara Park. This is home to more than a thousand deer which are considered the messengers of the gods. These deer have become a symbol of the city and have been designated national treasure status. Deer crackers are for sale around the park and you'll find some deer have learned to bow to visitors to ask to be fed.

Finish the day in Osaka where you will check into your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Hotel Sobial Osaka Dome or similar, Osaka

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9 Osaka - Day at Leisure

Today, you can relax at the hotel, explore Osaka at your leisure or take an optional tour of Hiroshima.

Optional Activity: Hiroshima Full-Day Trip
This morning, transfer to Shin-Osaka train station where your bullet train awaits. Climb aboard and marvel at the train's incredible velocity during an approximately 1.5-hour ride to Hiroshima. On arrival, continue to Miyajimaguchi by coach or train, then board a boat to the majestic Miyajima Island. Disembark and discover the natural and cultural treasures of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Island for 45 minutes with your guide. See the shimmering Itsukushima Shrine, then revitalise with a delicious lunch in a local eatery (not included).

Re-board the boat and return to Hiroshima to reflect on the region's history. Take a moment of contemplation at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a historical site near where the atomic bomb exploded. Finally, visit the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), a skeletal structure that miraculously survived the 1945 attack. Return to the train station for the exhilarating return journey to Osaka on the bullet train, where the tour concludes. Please see current pricing in Important Information. Paid on tour.

Overnight: Hotel Sobial Osaka Dome or similar, Osaka

Gratuities / tipping

Land
While Japan does not have a tipping culture for most services, the travel industry works a little differently and there is still an expectation of tipping on these tours. While tipping is not mandatory, it is common practice and a gesture of appreciation which is shared amongst the local guides, drivers and other staff members who have serviced your tour. The expected tip is $10 per person per day, paid in local currency where touring and/or transfer services are provided. Please factor this into your holiday budget, as we know this is going to be an amazing adventure!

Please note: Tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Spring (March - May)
Tokyo
Spring is a celebrated season in Tokyo as the city shakes off the winter chill. Temperatures are mild and increase steadily, typically ranging from 10°C to 20°C. March can still be brisk, but by May, the days are comfortably warm. This period is famous for the cherry blossom bloom, usually peaking in late March or early April. While there are occasional spring showers, the air is generally fresh and ideal for exploring the city parks.

Osaka
Spring in Osaka is very similar to Tokyo, offering pleasant and warming conditions. Temperatures generally sit between 11°C and 21°C. It is a fantastic time for outdoor sightseeing as the humidity remains low and the sunshine increases. Like its eastern neighbour, Osaka sees a vibrant transformation during the sakura season, with the city's gardens and castle grounds becoming popular gathering spots for locals and travellers alike.

Summer (June - August)
Tokyo
Summer in Tokyo is characterised by high heat and significant humidity. The season begins with a rainy period known as tsuyu in June and July, bringing frequent overcast skies and drizzling rain. As the rain clears in August, temperatures often soar above 30°C and rarely drop below 25°C at night. The high humidity can make the heat feel more intense, making air-conditioned indoor attractions a popular refuge during the mid afternoon.

Osaka
Osaka's summer is notoriously hot and often feels slightly warmer than Tokyo due to the urban heat island effect. Temperatures frequently reach 33°C or higher, especially in August. The rainy season in June brings heavy precipitation, and the humidity remains high throughout the quarter. Despite the sweltering conditions, summer is a lively time in Osaka, filled with major festivals and spectacular evening fireworks displays along the rivers.

Autumn (September - November)
Tokyo
Autumn is widely considered one of the most pleasant times to visit Tokyo. The intense summer heat breaks in September, though the month can still be warm and see occasional typhoons. By October and November, the weather turns crisp and cool with clear blue skies. Temperatures typically range from 15°C to 23°C. The humidity drops significantly, and the city's trees turn brilliant shades of red and gold toward the end of the season.

Osaka
Autumn in Osaka offers a refreshing transition into cooler, drier weather. Early September remains quite warm, but October brings very comfortable daytime temperatures around 20°C. By November, the air becomes crisp and cool, ranging down to about 10°C at night. This season is perfect for walking tours and visiting the surrounding mountains, as the rainfall decreases and the autumn foliage reaches its peak.

Winter (December - February)
Tokyo
Winter in Tokyo is cold, dry, and remarkably sunny. Unlike the snowy regions of northern Japan, Tokyo enjoys many clear, bright days with very little rainfall. Temperatures generally range from 2°C to 12°C. While it rarely snows in the city centre, the wind can feel quite biting. It is a season of crisp air and excellent visibility, often providing the best views of Mount Fuji from the city's observation decks.

Osaka
Winter in Osaka is cold and mostly overcast compared to Tokyo, though it remains relatively mild. Temperatures typically stay between 3°C and 10°C. While the city stays fairly dry, occasional light snow flurries may occur in January or February, though they rarely accumulate on the ground. The damp cold can feel penetrating, so warm layers are essential for those exploring the city's famous street food markets during the evening.

Weather
We always suggest referring to an online source for the most up-to-date weather information for your destination/s.

Passport Validity:

A relaxed level of fitness will be required.

Expect a comfortable pace of touring with a focus on leisure time and gentle activity. This may include city tours, the ability to walk up and down small flights of stairs and gentle slopes. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. As this is a winter themed tour, you will need to be mindful of snow/ice when walking and use appropriate shoes.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.

Visas

A tourist visa is not required for Australian or New Zealand citizens visiting Japan for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, visiting friends or relatives, etc. that does not include remunerative activities.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.

• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
