Day 2 Tokyo Morning Sightseeing Tour - Free Afternoon

This morning, you will head out on a sightseeing tour of Tokyo, starting at the Tsukiji Outer Market where you'll encounter many kinds of traditional Japanese cuisine. You'll then visit the stunning Meiji Shrine which is a Shinto religious site that was dedicated to the Imperial Family in 1926. Walk among the serene gardens that surround the shrine as you hear about its importance from your guide. The tour will end at around lunchtime, and you’re free to explore this amazing city at your own leisure in the afternoon. Alternatively, join an optional afternoon tour.

Optional Activity: Tokyo afternoon tour including the famous Tokyo Tower
8,000 JPY per person, bookable on tour
First enjoy the sweeping views of this vast city from the observation decks at the famous Tokyo Tower, the landmark of Tokyo (entry included). Then visit Shinjuku, the largest entertainment, business and shopping district in Tokyo. It’s also a microcosm of Tokyo: there are skyscrapers and neon lights but also yakitori stalls in old wooden shacks. Last visit Shibuya Crossing, an iconic landmark in Tokyo, to see upwards of 1,000 people crossing the multi-cornered intersection at a time. Finish the day back at your hotel.

Overnight: Hotel Mystays Tachikawa or similar, Tokyo

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 Tokyo Free Day

Today you can enjoy free time at leisure to explore the city. Alternatively, you can join an optional Hakone sightseeing tour.

Optional Activity: Hakone Day Tour
15,000 JPY per person, bookable on tour
Away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, Hakone offers tranquillity among stunning natural scenery. Upon arrival at Hakone, enjoy a boat trip across the serene Ashinoko Lake, followed a cable car ride up the mountains to view the sulphur vents of Owakudani. This area around the crater was created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone, some 3000 years ago. You’ll have spectacular views, and on a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji in the distance. Lastly visit The Hakone Open-Air Museum, which successfully attempts to create a harmonic balance of nature and art by exhibiting various sculptures on its grounds in combination with views of the surrounding valley and mountains. This art museum opened in 1969 and was the very first outdoor gallery in Japan. The defining feature of the Hakone Open Air Museum is the vast array of 120 sculptures spread across the grounds. Because these sculptures are outside, they can create different impressions from season to season. Finish the day back in Tokyo.

Overnight: Hotel Mystays Tachikawa or similar, Tokyo

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Tokyo – Mt Fuji – Nagano Region

After breakfast, embark on a journey of approximately 370 kilometres, starting with a drive to Mount Fuji’s 5th Station.

It features shrines, torii gates and souvenir shops. Afterwards, continue to the nearby Five Lakes Area to admire the scenery. The waters are overlooked by surrounding mountains, including Mt Fuji.

Continue inland and arrive in the Nagano Region, in the heart of the Japanese Alps, where you will check into your accommodation.

Please note: Takayama's hotel accommodation is subject to availability and may be changed for accommodation in the nearby city of Gifu. If this happens, a visit to Takayama will still be provided prior to travelling onwards to Gifu.

The tour continues with a visit to the iconic Temple of the Golden Pavilion, perhaps the most breathtaking in Kyoto. Also known as Kinkaku-ji, the temple’s top two floors are coated in gold leaf, creating a dazzling mirror image in the pond on which it’s built.

Afterwards, travel to Kyushu, the third-largest and most southerly of Japan's four main islands, and into Beppu. Each hell has a distinct, otherworldly character — from the stunning Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) with its vibrant, cobalt-blue water, to the blood-red Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), one of Japan's oldest and most dramatic hot springs. While these boiling springs are for viewing only, not bathing, you'll be captivated by their intense heat, vibrant colours and billowing steam. You'll also get to see the bubbling grey mud pools of Oniishibozu Jigoku (Shaven Monk's Head Hell) and witness the geyser eruption at Tatsumaki Jigoku (Tornado Hell). This morning, visit Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's largest and most complete castles.

Yanagawa's canals were fortified when it was transformed into a castle town, shortly before the start of the Edo period, at the beginning of the 17th century. Here, you will enjoy some sightseeing and marvel at the network of canals. Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

A tourist visa is not required for Australian or New Zealand citizens visiting Japan for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, visiting friends or relatives, etc. that does not include remunerative activities.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
