Day 2 Tokyo Sightseeing Tour - Afternoon at Leisure

After breakfast, discover Tokyo’s must-see landmarks on an introductory morning tour.

This morning, head out on a sightseeing tour of Tokyo, starting at the stunning Meiji Shrine, a Shinto religious site that was dedicated to the Imperial Family in 1920. Walk among the serene gardens surrounding the shrine as your guide shares details of its importance.

Afterwards, visit the nearby Omotesando Hills shopping complex, home to high-end flagship stores and dining options within an architecturally stunning building.

The tour ends at around lunchtime. Explore this amazing city at your own leisure during the afternoon, or alternatively, join an optional afternoon tour.

First, enjoy the sweeping views of this vast city from the observation decks at the famous Tokyo Tower, the landmark of Tokyo (entry included). Then visit Shinjuku, the largest entertainment, business and shopping district in Tokyo. It’s a microcosm of Tokyo, with skyscrapers and neon lights, and also yakitori stalls in old wooden shacks. Today, enjoy time at leisure to explore Tokyo.

Overnight: Hotel Mystays Tachikawa or similar, Tokyo

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Tokyo – Mount Fuji – Matsumoto

After breakfast, drive to Mount Fuji’s 5th Station. Located 2300m above sea level, this observation point offers a commanding view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below, making it a popular spot even for those who do not intend on climbing the mountain. It features shrines, torii gates and souvenir shops.

Afterwards, continue to Lake Kawaguchiko, in nearby Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park to admire the scenery as you enjoy a short cruise across the lake. The waters are overlooked by surrounding mountains, including Mount Fuji and Mount Komagatake. On a still, clear day, you can see a perfect mirror image of Mount Fuji reflected in the lake.

Continue onwards to Matsumoto, check into the hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Matsumoto is a charming city nestled in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan, surrounded by the breathtaking Japanese Alps. Historically known as Fukashi, it flourished as a castle town, most notably around the magnificent Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's few remaining original castles and a designated National Treasure. The city's history dates back centuries, with the castle's origins in the early 16th century.

Today's journey is approximately 350 kilometres.

Overnight: Tabino Hotel Lit Matsumoto or similar, Matsumoto

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Matsumoto Castle - Afternoon at Leisure

Step back in time on a guided tour of Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's premier historic castles, dating back to the early 16th century. Originally known as Fukashi Castle, its fortifications were first established around 1504 during the tumultuous Warring States period.

The impressive five-tiered, six-story keep that stands today, earning it the nickname "Crow Castle" for its striking black exterior. The castle was largely constructed in the late 16th century, around 1594, making it one of Japan's oldest surviving original castle keeps. Wander through its iconic black and white facade as you learn stories of its feudal past, including its role as a strategic military base and the various clans who controlled it, from the Ogasawara to the Ishikawa and beyond, under the Edo Period Tokugawa shogunate. Explore the castle's interior, discovering hidden defences and armoury displays showcasing samurai weaponry, and learn about the architectural ingenuity designed to thwart invaders. Ascend to the top floor for panoramic views of the surrounding city and the majestic Japanese Alps.

Enjoy the afternoon at leisure to explore Matsumoto.

Overnight: Tabino Hotel Lit Matsumoto or similar, Matsumoto

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Matsumoto – Shirakawa-go - Takayama - Kanazawa

Today, you'll visit the countryside to see how local people live.

See Shirakawa-go, an open air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a closer look at its collection of traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.

Afterwards, visit Takayama Old Town and walk along Sanmachi Street, a wonderfully preserved district of homes, shops and restaurants. Takayama was once a bustling hub drawing expert artisans, farmers and merchants from across the surrounding area, and Sanmachi as well as Oshinmachi preserve the traditional aesthetic of this time. Entering this district is like stepping back in time to the Edo period.

Finish the day in Kanazawa, checking into your hotel, then enjoying an evening at leisure.

Kanazawa remains an important city in its region and serves as the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture. The city boasts historical attractions, restored residences and modern museums. Its main attraction is Kenrokuen, one of Japan's "three best landscape gardens" and considered by many to be the most beautiful.

Today's journey is approximately 380 kilometres.

Overnight: Kanazawa Kokusai Hotel or similar, Kanazawa

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Kanazawa - Kyoto

This morning, visit Kenrokuen, considered to be one of Japan's "most beautiful landscape gardens". Opened to the public in 1871, it features a variety of flowering trees that provide the garden with a different look for each season.

Kanazawa produces nearly 99% of all gold leaf made in Japan. Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience, attending a gold leaf craft workshop to see how it is crafted and decorate your own items.

Afterwards, depart for Kyoto and on arrival enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure to explore.

Kyoto served as Japan's capital and the Emperor's residence from 794 until 1868. Over the centuries, regional wars and natural disasters have been cause for extensive reconstruction throughout the city. Today, countless temples, shrines and other priceless structures survive, making the city a must-see destination.

Overnight: Crystal Hotel Kyoto IV or similar, Kyoto

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Kyoto Sightseeing Tour - Nara - Osaka

Today, enjoy a half-day sightseeing tour of the ancient capital of Kyoto.

Visit Kiyomizu-dera, one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. Founded in 780 AD, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994. The temple is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 metres above the hillside, offering amazing views of the city.

Afterwards, experience the iconic Temple of the Golden Pavilion. Also known as “Kinkaku-ji,” the temple’s top two floors are coated in gold leaf, creating a dazzling mirror image in the pond on which it’s built. Then, enjoy a walk at Ninenzaka, a historic street lined with beautiful historic homes that reflect Kyoto’s vibrant past.

Afterwards, travel to nearby Nara to visit Nara Park, home to more than a thousand deer. The deer are the symbol of the city, are considered to be messengers of the gods and have been designated national treasure status. They are known to bow to visitors to ask to be fed and you'll find deer crackers for sale around the park.

Finish the day in Osaka. Check into your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Gratuities / tipping

Land
While Japan does not have a tipping culture for most services, the travel industry works a little differently and there is still an expectation of tipping on these tours. While tipping is not mandatory, it is common practice and a gesture of appreciation which is shared amongst the local guides, drivers and other staff members who have serviced your tour. The expected tip is $10 AUD per person per day, paid in local currency where touring and/or transfer services are provided. Please factor this into your holiday budget, as we know this is going to be an amazing adventure!

Please note: Tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Japan features four distinct seasons: Spring (March–May) is mild and world-famous for its cherry blossoms; Summer (June–August) is hot, humid, and marks the arrival of the rainy season; Autumn (September–November) offers crisp, dry air and vibrant colourful foliage; and Winter (December–February) is cold and dry, often providing the clearest views of Mount Fuji despite the biting winds. While temperatures in Tokyo and Osaka generally range from a brisk 2°C in winter to over 33°C in the peak of summer, Osaka typically feels slightly warmer due to the urban heat island effect, particularly during the sweltering and festive summer months.

Weather
We always suggest referring to an online source for the most up-to-date weather information for your destination/s.

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Dietary Requests
Meal options and availability differ between airlines and routes therefore not all dietary requests can be accommodated. If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

COACH TOUR
Meals:
For meals not included, the tour leader (when available) will offer assistance with reservations, suggestions and directions to local restaurants. It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements.

Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.

Luggage:
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

OTHER
Mobility:
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

A relaxed level of fitness will be required. Expect a comfortable pace of touring with a focus on leisure time and gentle activity. This may include city tours, the ability to walk up and down small flights of stairs and gentle slopes. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance.

Please note: Some areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, with personal walking sticks and other aids required should they be needed. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.
Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Wildlife sighting:
TripADeal cannot guarantee animal sightings on tour. Wildlife are unpredictable and factors such as weather conditions, predatory fear and animal movements can impact sightings.

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

A tourist visa is not required for Australian or New Zealand citizens visiting Japan for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, visiting friends or relatives, etc. that does not include remunerative activities.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected. Supplier Fees
In the event the tour package you have purchased is unable to proceed, and/or a Travel Supplier is unable to fulfil the tour due to external circumstances (Limitation of Liability e.g. a Force Majeure event), there may be a fee or amount of money that is withheld by our Suppliers and is unrecoverable. This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. If refunds are not available from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. In the event we are unable to obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee.
