After breakfast, you'll head to Lake Yamanaka for stunning views at the foot of Mt Fuji.

Visit Oshino Hakkai, a natural monument made up of eight spring water ponds fed by snowmelt. Situated between Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka, the clear, mineral-rich pools are part of the Mount Fuji World Heritage Site.

Day 4 Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park

Today, we head to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, a highlight that you'll never forget.

Established in 1964, the park is home to the world-famous snow monkeys known to bathe in the hot springs. The trail to the park is 1.6 kilometres in both directions. It is unsealed but well-maintained and other than a short staircase at the trail entrance, a final steep staircase and a sloped path at the end of the trail/entrance to the park itself, the trail is mostly level and easy to walk. With no barriers between you and the monkeys (don't worry, they are very calm) this is a unique opportunity to observe these curious creatures in close proximity as they walk around you in the snow, wrestle with each other, endlessly groom, and of course, soak in their favourite hot spring.

Afterwards, visit Zenko-ji Temple, one of the oldest, largest, and most important Buddhist temples in Japan. A registered National Treasure, the temple's near-1400-year history is full of legend and myth.

Following this, return to your hotel in Nagano/Matsumoto area and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Explore stone streets lined with quaint wooden shops and restaurants, which look even more charming in a blanket of snow.

Finish the day in Gifu.

Dating back as far as 250 years ago, the steep roofs are angled to accommodate the heavy snowfall the town is known for. This well-preserved open-air museum was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

Afterwards, visit nearby Takayama Old Town, once a wealthy merchant town dating back to the Feudal ages. Step back in time as you stroll Sannomachi Street, which survives in a particularly pretty state with many old homes, shops, and restaurants.

Land
While Japan does not have a tipping culture for most services, the travel industry works a little differently and there is still an expectation of tipping on these tours. While tipping is not mandatory, it is common practice and a gesture of appreciation which is shared amongst the local guides, drivers and other staff members who have serviced your tour. The expected tip is $10 per person per day, paid in local currency where touring and/or transfer services are provided and does not include free days at leisure. Please factor this into your holiday budget, as we know this is going to be an amazing adventure!

Please note: Tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Nagano/Matsumoto Area:
Nagano, located inland and surrounded by mountains, experiences a colder winter climate with significant snowfall, especially in the higher elevations. Expect a cold winter with significant snowfall throughout January and February. March sees a gradual warming and a mix of rain and snow. Pack very warm layers, waterproof outerwear, and sturdy footwear.

Average Temperatures:
January: High 3°C / Low -5°C
February: High 5°C / Low -4°C
March: High 10°C / Low -1°C

Tokyo:
Tokyo, located on the coast, has a milder winter compared to Nagano, with less snowfall. Expect a milder winter with cool temperatures and occasional rain. Snow is not very frequent. March brings a noticeable warming trend with increasing rainfall. Pack layers, including a warm jacket, and be prepared for some wet days in March.

Average Temperatures:
January: High 10°C / Low 3°C
February: High 10°C / Low 3°C
March: High 14°C / Low 6°C

Osaka:
Osaka, situated on the coast of the Kansai region, features a temperate climate that is generally milder than Tokyo's during the winter months. While the city feels crisp and chilly, significant snowfall is rare; if it does snow, it typically melts almost immediately. January and February are the coldest and driest months, often accompanied by brisk winds from Osaka Bay. By March, the city experiences a "bridge" season—milder days begin to emerge, and the famous plum and cherry blossoms start to appear toward the end of the month. Pack a warm coat and accessories for the winter wind, but transition to versatile layers for the fluctuating temperatures of March.

Average Temperatures:
January: High 10°C / Low 3°C
February: High 10°C / Low 3°C
March: High 14°C / Low 6°C

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

A moderate level of fitness will be required.
Expect a moderate pace of touring with a focus on guided tours that may include full days with extended activity, guided city tours or nature walks. You will require a general level of fitness for unassisted navigation of stairs and inclines, longer distances with possible periods of standing when visiting sites, walking on sloping, uneven ground or elevations. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Many areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, where the unassisted use of personal walking sticks and other aids may be required. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.

Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Australian passport holders are eligible for Japan's visa exemption scheme for short-stay tourism and business travel. You don't need a visa if you're visiting for less than 90 days as a tourist, for a business trip or conference, or to visit friends and family.

We recommend you to use the Visit Japan Web to pre-register your details before arrival. Visit Japan Web is a web service to help smooth arrival procedures at the airport in Japan. You can register your information for Immigration and Customs procedures ahead of your trip, including the disembarkation card for visa exemption (for eligible travellers such as Australians). Once you have registered, you can use the QR codes from the service instead of paper forms as part of the procedures to enter Japan.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
