Day 8 Road Town, Tortola

To the east of Puerto Rico is an archipelago that comprises the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands - Road Town is the capital of the latter. Found in the middle of the south coast, Road Town is on the island of Tortola which, while the largest of the British Virgin Islands, is only 56km square. It’s an island peppered with calm bays and hidden coves, which have attracted travellers, sailors and yachtsmen for many centuries.

Step into a town rich in French, British, and Caribbean heritage. From luxurious beach clubs to the towering UNESCO Brimstone Fortress, a cruise to Basseterre has something for everyone to enjoy. As you gently cruise into the island’s Port Zante, you’ll be met with the charming delights of Basseterre, complete with its bustling, Georgian-inspired centrepiece named the Circus, modelled on London’s own Piccadilly.

Venture across the island to fascinating historical sites and points of natural splendour. Treat your tastebuds to an eclectic range of cuisine or why not try a rum-based cocktail (or two) at a beachside bar? You could also indulge in some retail therapy with more than 60 duty-free shops dotted around the pastel-facade streets.

As with many of the Caribbean islands, St Lucia has a European colonial history. The French settled here in the mid-17th century. Castries itself was founded in 1650. Its original name was Carenage, which translates to ‘careening’ or ‘beaching’, relating to the ships brought ashore here. Elements of French influence can be seen throughout Castries, from its wonderful fusion food to colonial style architecture. Not to mention the French-based Creole language that you’ll hear as you explore.

From sun-kissed beaches, underground caverns and glass-like lagoons, to emerald jungles and vast historic plantations, Barbados is a paradise just waiting to be explored.

The island of Barbados gets its name from the Bearded Fig Tree, which was once found in abundance across the island. The capital city, Bridgetown, is home to a charming combination of traditional colonial buildings and rich Caribbean vibrancy and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

An Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA. If you arrive in Canada by train, bus, or boat, you don’t need a visa or eTA, but you do need to bring the right travel documents.

United States of America
Australian passport holders must obtain an “ESTA” visa waiver in order to enter or transit in the United States.
Please note: You may be required to obtain a visa if you do not meet the eligibility requirements of the ESTA program. Please see https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov for full eligibility requirements and applications.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
