Please note:
• Flights are not guaranteed to be direct from your departure city to Tokyo.
• Some flights may depart Day 0.

Day 2 Tokyo - Day at Leisure

Today, you can enjoy free time at leisure to explore Tokyo.

Overnight: Hotel Mystays Tachikawa or similar, Tokyo

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 Tokyo - Lake Kawaguchiko - Matsumoto

After breakfast, drive to Lake Kawaguchiko, in nearby Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, to admire the scenery as you enjoy a short cruise across the lake. The waters are overlooked by surrounding mountains, including Mount Fuji. On a still, clear day, you can see a perfect mirror image of Mount Fuji reflected in the lake.

Afterwards, continue onwards to Matsumoto and step back in time on a guided tour of Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's premier historic castles, dating back to the early 16th century. Originally known as Fukashi Castle, its fortifications were first established around 1504 during the tumultuous Warring States period.

The impressive five-tiered, six-story keep stands today, earning it the nickname 'Crow Castle' for its striking black exterior. The castle was largely constructed in the late 16th century, around 1594, making it one of Japan's oldest surviving original castle keeps. Ascend to the top floor for panoramic views of the surrounding city and the majestic Japanese Alps.

Matsumoto is a charming city nestled in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan, surrounded by the breathtaking Japanese Alps. The city's history dates back centuries, with the castle's origins in the early 16th century.

Afterwards, check into your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Today you will travel approximately 250 kilometres.

Overnight: Tabino Hotel Lit Matsumoto or similar, Matsumoto

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Matsumoto - Shirakawa Go - Takayama - Gifu

Today is a fun day to visit Japan's countryside on a trip of approximately 315 kilometres.

First, visit Shirakawa-go, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. It is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.

Afterwards, visit Takayama Old Town and walk along Sanmachi Street, which survives in a particularly pretty state with many old homes, shops and restaurants. Takayama was once a bustling hub drawing expert artisans, farmers and merchants from throughout the surrounding area, and Sanmachi as well as Oshinmachi preserve the traditional aesthetic of this time. Enter this district, and you step into the closest thing to the Edo period outside of a historical drama.

Finish the day in Gifu, where you will check into your hotel and enjoy an evening at leisure.

Overnight: Hotel Resol Gifu or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Gifu - Toyota Commemorative Museum - Shizuoka

This morning, visit the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology. This hands-on, historical museum in Nagoya, Japan is located within the original 1911 factory buildings of Sakichi Toyoda. It showcases the company’s evolution from a textile machinery manufacturer into a global automotive giant, featuring exhibits on weaving, robotics and car assembly.

Afterwards, continue to Shizuoka and check into your hotel accommodation for an evening at leisure.

Shizuoka served as the historic seat of power and retirement home for Tokugawa Ieyasu, the great unifier who established the Tokugawa Shogunate. Although the city’s historic centre suffered extensive destruction from air raids during World War II, it successfully rebuilt itself while honouring its deep-rooted samurai legacy. Today, Shizuoka is celebrated as Japan’s premier capital for green tea production, offering breathtaking, iconic views of nearby Mount Fuji and the reconstructed ramparts of Sunpu Castle.

Today's travel is approximately 220 kilometres.

Overnight: Hotel MyStay Shimizu or similar, Shizuoka Region

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Shizuoka - Hakone - Yokohama

Today, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Hakone on your way to Yokohama.

Hakone is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, less than 100 kilometres from Tokyo. Famous for hot springs, natural beauty, and the views across Lake Ashinoko (also known as Lake Ashi) of nearby Mount Fuji, Hakone is one of the most popular destinations for those looking for a break from the busy city of Tokyo.

First stop in Hakone is the viewpoint and area around Owakudani Crater, created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone some 3,000 years ago. View the steaming sulphurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers in this active volcanic zone. Eggs cooked in Owakudani's hot spring pools with their shells blackened by the sulphur are on sale at shops in the area. If you are interested, eating one is said to prolong one's life by 7 years. Additionally, Owakudani has good views of Mount Fuji on clear days.

Afterwards, visit the Hakone Open Air Museum. Located in the mountains of Hakone, the museum spreads across 70,000 square meters and has beautiful views that vary from season to season of the surrounding mountains. Opened in 1969, it was the first outdoor gallery in Japan. The defining feature of the Hakone Open Air Museum is the vast array of 120 sculptures spread across the grounds. Including works by sculptors from both Japan and overseas, the many sculptures of this museum invite you to get up close to appreciate what each piece is trying to convey.

After leaving Hakone, continue onwards to Yokohama and check into your hotel accommodation for an evening at leisure.

Yokohama transformed rapidly from a quiet fishing village into Japan’s first major port opened to international trade following the end of feudal isolation in 1859. Despite facing near-total devastation twice, first by the catastrophic 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and later by severe World War II air raids, the city repeatedly rose from the ashes. Today, Yokohama thrives as Japan’s second-largest metropolis, renowned for its vibrant, historic Chinatown, Western-influenced architecture, and the futuristic Minato Mirai waterfront skyline.

Today's travel is approximately 180 kilometres.

Overnight: APA Hotel & Resort or similar, Yokohama

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Yokohama - Tokyo Cruise Port - Embark 12-Night Celebrity Cruise

Today, Osaka thrives as Western Japan's largest metropolis, world-renowned for its majestic reconstructed castle, the neon-drenched entertainment district of Dōtonbori, and its passionate, distinct street food culture.

From 1639 to 1859, Japan closed its borders to almost the entire world. During this period of isolation, Nagasaki was the only open port in Japan. The Dutch and Chinese were permitted to trade, operating primarily from the artificial fan-shaped island of Dejima in the harbour. Walk through streets influenced by both Chinese and European cultures in fascinating Nagasaki.

Day 15 Kagoshima, Japan

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 17:00

Kagoshima is the southernmost city on Japan's bullet train network and the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture.

The city is often compared with its Italian sister city, Naples, due to a similarly mild climate, streets lined with palm trees, plus the presence of Sakurajima, Kagoshima's version of Vesuvius.

Near the port, find the fascinating Kagoshima aquarium, traditional Senganen Japanese gardens, museums, the Shiroyama mountaintop park with a view over the city, and Yakushima Island, a registered world heritage site. Plus, an abundance of hot springs, mud baths and spas to promote serenity and relaxation.

Gratuities / tipping

Land
While Japan does not have a tipping culture for most services, the travel industry works a little differently and there is still an expectation of tipping on these tours. While tipping is not mandatory, it is common practice and a gesture of appreciation which is shared amongst the local guides, drivers and other staff members who have serviced your tour. The expected tip is $10 per person per day, paid in local currency where touring and/or transfer services are provided. Please factor this into your holiday budget, as we know this is going to be an amazing adventure!

Cruise
Gratuities (tips) are included for the cruise staff's services throughout this tour's cruise component. Some optional purchases on board, such as spa services and specialty dining may incur additional service charges. If you have any questions regarding the gratuities on your cruise, please speak to the guest services staff onboard the ship.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Visas

Japan
A tourist visa is not required for Australian or New Zealand citizens visiting Japan for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, visiting friends or relatives, etc. that does not include remunerative activities.

We recommend you to use the Visit Japan Web to pre-register your details before arrival. Visit Japan Web is a web service to help smooth arrival procedure at the airport in Japan. You can register your information for Immigration and Customs procedures ahead of your trip, including the disembarkation card for visa exemption (for eligible travellers such as Australians). Once you have registered, you can use the QR codes from the service instead of paper forms as part of the procedures to enter Japan.

South Korea
Australian passport holders can visit South Korea as tourists for stays of up to 90 days without applying for a K-ETA (or visa waiver) until 31 December 2026. Previously approved K-ETA applications will remain valid up to the granted expiry date. Australian passport holders travelling from 1 January 2027 may be required to apply for a K-ETA. Visit the official K-ETA website for more information.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
