Itinerary

Day 1 Australia (or New Zealand) - Colombo, Sri Lanka

Today, depart for Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo. You’ll be warmly met with traditional Sri Lankan hospitality.

From the airport, you will be transferred to the nearby coastal village of Waikkal, just north of Negombo. Waikkal is known for its coconut fringed beaches, rich birdlife, and canals dating back to the Dutch colonial era.

Check into your hotel, and wind down before your tour starts the following morning. Breathe in the salty air and feel the gentle rhythm of island life. Your Sri Lankan adventure has only just begun!

Overnight: Club Hotel Dolphin, Waikkal or similar.

Meals included: In-Flight

Day 2 Waikkal - Sigiriya

After a refreshing breakfast at the hotel, bid farewell to the coast and begin your scenic drive inland to the historical heart of Sri Lanka, the Central Province. Here lies the home of ancient kings, lush greenery, and spiritual heritage. Your destination today is Sigiriya, part of the island's famed “Cultural Triangle” and home to one of the most iconic archeological wonders in South Asia. The journey today takes approximately 4.5 hours in which you will pass through rural villages, paddy fields, and coconut plantations. All giving you a glimpse of authentic Sri Lankan life.

Upon arriving in Sigiriya, check into your hotel. Later in the afternoon, embark on your adventure to the legendary Sigiriya Rock Fortress, often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in the fifth century by King Kashyapa, who transformed the towering 200 meter high rock into his royal citadel.

Begin your climb through symmetrical royal gardens, advanced hydraulic systems, and ancient boulder gardens that reflect a once splendid kingdom. Halfway up, pause to view the world famous Sigiriya frescoes, ethereal maidens painted in vibrant earth tones. Stop by the Mirror Wall, once polished so finely that the king could see his reflection. Inscriptions and ancient graffiti on the wall offer a poetic window into Sri Lanka’s literary past. At the summit, discover the remains of the royal palace and breathtaking 360° views of the surrounding forest, lakes, and countryside. It’s a moment of reward, both visually and spiritually, that connects you with the grandeur of ancient Lanka.

Return to the hotel for a relaxing evening.

Overnight: Occidental Paradise, Sigiriya or similar.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 Polonnaruwa

Your day begins with a delicious breakfast at the hotel. Today, you'll journey back over 800 years to the golden age of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second great ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A scenic drive of just over one hour will take you to this remarkably well preserved medieval city, which flourished under the rule of King Parakramabahu I in the twelfth century. Upon arrival, you’ll walk in the footsteps of the ancient as you explore the ruins. Visit the Royal Palace Complex, with its towering walls and ancient audience hall, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of royal life. Walk the Quadrangle, a sacred cluster of intricately carved buildings, including the Vatadage, designed to enshrine relics with a circular elegance unique to Sri Lankan architecture. The crown jewel of Polonnaruwa is the Gal Vihara, a series of four colossal Buddha statues masterfully carved from a single granite rock. These serene figures, including the reclining Buddha, remain some of the finest examples of Sinhalese rock sculpture.

Following the tour, enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan lunch at a local restaurant with live demonstrations of traditional handicrafts while you enjoy your food.

In the late afternoon, for those seeking a little more adventure and nature, feel free to take the optional wildlife safari through Minneriya National Park.

Optional Activity: Afternoon Safari
Experience an afternoon safari at Minneriya National Park. If you're up for a serious rumble in the jungle, then Minneriya is the place to go! Spread over 8,800 hectares, it's a sanctuary for elephants and home to herds of deer and ample birdlife, but its spotlight remains between swaying trunks and flapping ears. Park your jeep on the bank of the reservoir and switch off its engine. Have the opportunity to see herds of elephants - one by one - roll onto the grass-covered banks to feed on tender shoots. In fact, this is considered one of, if not the largest elephant gathering in the world (over 300 at a time) – it's an absolute must-do for wildlife enthusiasts. Please see current pricing in Important Information. The location will be chosen based on where the elephants are migrating that day, with the potential to be in Kaudulla National Park.

Overnight: Occidental Paradise, Sigiriya or similar.

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch

Day 4 Sigiriya - Kandy

After breakfast, depart from Sigiriya and begin your journey to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s hill capital.

Your first stop en route is the Dambulla Cave Temple, an extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Site that has attracted pilgrims for over 2,000 years. Rising dramatically from the plains, this rocky outcrop shelters a complex of five awe inspiring caves, each filled with ancient Buddhist murals and a mesmerising collection of over 150 statues, including a massive reclining Buddha.

The artwork which contains some of the finest examples of religious cave art in South Asia creates an unmatched atmosphere. As you ascend to the temple itself, enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding countryside, dotted with lakes, forests, and distant hills.

From Dambulla, drive south through lush greenery and arrive in Matale, a region famous for its vibrant spice plantations. Here, you'll stop at a fragrant spice garden, where you'll be guided through rows of cinnamon trees, cardamom bushes, pepper vines, and other exotic plants. Learn about the role of spices in Sri Lankan cuisine and their use in Ayurveda, the island’s traditional healing practice. Toward the end of the visit, you will get the chance to sample herbal teas or enjoy a quick shoulder massage with locally made oils.

Continuing your journey into the highlands, you’ll reach the charming city of Kandy, nestled among forested hills and centred around the tranquil Kandy Lake. As the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, the city is steeped in history, culture, and elegance. Explore Kandy’s colonial era buildings, colourful local markets and temples hidden amidst the hills on a brief city tour. Drive along the lakefront promenade, stop at view points for photos, and soak in the relaxed pace of life in this sacred city. If time allows, a visit to a local artisan workshop or gem museum will be included.

As the afternoon fades into evening, head to Sky Loft, your hilltop retreat with modern comforts and panoramic views over the Kandy skyline. Perched above the city, it offers a peaceful atmosphere and contemporary style, making it the perfect place to unwind after a day of cultural discovery.

Optional Activity: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is home to one of the most sacred relics in Buddhism, the tooth of Lord Buddha. As you explore this magnificent site, you’ll witness the deep reverence and traditions that surround the temple which has been an important pilgrimage destination for centuries. The temple itself is a stunning example of Kandyan architecture with beautifully decorated halls, intricate carvings and serene surroundings. Please see current pricing in Important Information.

Day 5 Pekoe Trail: Hanthana - Galaha

Today begins with the fresh mountain air and the promise of adventure as you set out on a memorable trek along Stage 1 of the Pekoe Trail, Sri Lanka’s premier long-distance walking route through the Central Highlands. This specially-curated soft-adventure hike takes you from the scenic ridges of Hantana to the peaceful village of Galaha, following paths once walked by colonial era planters and tea workers.

After breakfast, transfer to the Hantana mountain range, just a short drive from Kandy. Known for its mist veiled hills and historic tea estates, this area once served as a testing ground for the earliest experiments in Ceylon tea cultivation. Here, you’ll meet your expert trail guide and begin your trek through a tapestry of natural and cultural landscapes.

The trail meanders through tea plantations, eucalyptus groves, pine forest patches, and grassy ridge lines. Along the way, you'll pass historic tea bungalows, rust-red drying sheds, and friendly estate workers picking leaves by hand, still practicing methods passed down through generations. Along the way, your guide will share stories of British planters, the origins of the global tea trade and about life in the hill country.

The trek concludes in the quiet village of Galaha, once a vibrant community during the tea boom and now a sleepy hamlet set against the backdrop of emerald slopes. After your hike, a vehicle will return you to Sky Loft, Kandy, where you can rest your legs.

Back at your hotel, unwind with a rejuvenating herbal tea, or perhaps take a short stroll to watch the sunset over the hilltops.

Today’s hike is approximately 13 kilometres, taking around four hours to walk.

Overnight: Sky Loft, Kandy or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast, begin your ascent into Sri Lanka’s cool hill country. Today’s drive will take you past tea-covered hills, misty forests, and cascading waterfalls on the way to Nuwara Eliya.

As you ascend, the tropical landscape gives way to cool, pine-scented air and charming colonial architecture. Welcome to “Little England,” a town shaped by British planters and famed for its cool climate.

In the afternoon, step into the world of Ceylon tea with a hands-on tea plucking experience. Dressed in a traditional apron, walk through the manicured tea fields, learning how to pick the prized “two leaves and a bud.” Then tour a nearby working tea factory, where fresh leaves are transformed into aromatic teas through age-old techniques. End the visit with a tasting session, savoring the distinctive flavors of Sri Lanka’s finest brews, before returning to your hotel for the evening.

Optional Activity: Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya
Once a royal retreat, this 147-acre garden showcases over 4,000 species of plants including towering palms, exotic orchids, medicinal herbs and the iconic Giant Java Fig Tree. Take a leisurely stroll beneath shaded canopies, surrounded by vibrant blooms and the soft murmur of the Mahaweli River.

Gratuities / tipping

Gratuities (tips) are not included for the services of the tour leader (when available) and driver throughout the tour. The recommended tip is 2000 LKR per person per day. This covers the guide/leader and the driver and will be collected on tour.

In addition to the recommended gratuities for your dedicated tour leader and driver, a voluntary 'group kitty' may be introduced at the commencement of your tour. This optional contribution, not exceeding $25 AUD per person for the entire trip, helps cover smaller, shared tips along the journey for local services such as bellboys, shoe minders, and safari drivers. This streamlines tipping and ensures fair recognition for those who enhance your experience.

Please note: tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES

On the coast, you can expect a very consistent and tropical 27°C to 30°C in both the air and the water. As you head inland to the Pekoe Trail, the air turns refreshingly cool; daytime temperatures in the hills usually sit between 18°C and 23°C, making it perfect for trekking. While the highlands can see a bit of mist or a passing shower at any time, which is exactly what keeps the tea estates so lush and green. You’ll find that plenty of sunshine and warm weather are the norm across the island.

Weather
We always suggest referring to an online source for the most up-to-date weather information for your destination/s.

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Dietary Requests
Meal options and availability differ between airlines and routes therefore not all dietary requests can be accommodated. If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

Wildlife
TripADeal cannot guarantee animal sightings. Wildlife are unpredictable and factors such as weather conditions, predatory fear and animal movements can impact sightings.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

An active level of fitness will be required.
Expect an active pace of travel where the focus is on adventure with no limitations. You will need to be self-reliant, physically fit and healthy to participate in fast-paced travel, extended walking/trekking over several hours/days, navigate steep steps, slopes, rugged and uneven terrain, varying weather conditions, remote locations and higher elevations. You will be responsible for your own luggage and able to board all modes of transport without assistance. This tour is typically inaccessible to wheelchairs, mobility scooters and those requiring assistance while travelling.

Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Sri Lanka
A tourist visa for Sri Lanka is a strict requirement if travelling on an Australian or New Zealand Passport. You will need a visa in the form of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka. Limited facilities to obtain an ETA are available at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, however ETA's can be obtained prior to departure.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
