Day 3 Taipei - Shifen - Jiufen - Hualien

This morning, depart Taipei and travel to the nearby Pingxi district, where you will enjoy a quick ride along the Pingxi Branch Line rail. This is an 8-mile stretch of narrow-gauge railroad that runs alongside the Keelung River. Taking a ride on the Pingxi Line is like taking a step back in time and is one of the most popular day trips from Taiwan.

Step off the train in the town of Shifen, which is a popular town for launching sky lanterns. Sky lanterns are a Taiwanese tradition and Pingxi district is one of the few places where you are allowed to launch them. The paper lanterns inscribed with one's hopes for the coming year are launched into the sky and the preferred place to launch them is right on the tracks which makes for some great people watching. Here you will have the opportunity to launch a sky lantern (4 travellers to one sky lantern).

Afterwards, continue to the small mountainous village of Jiufen, made famous largely due to its similarity to the village in Spirited Away, arguably Hayao Miyazaki’s most popular movie. Here you will enjoy time at leisure to explore Jiufen and have lunch (not included). Here, you could explore the picturesque Old Street, which is a narrow alleyway lined up with small food stalls, tea houses, souvenir shops, and pottery stores. The most picturesque tea house in Jiufen is A-Mei Teahouse. This multi-story teahouse is strategically located just a little off the main street, perched on top of a hill. From their balcony, you can admire the picturesque view in front of you, Keelung Mountain to the right and the Northern shores of Taiwan on the left.

Continue onwards to Hualien City. On arrival, check into your hotel, where you may enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Please note: If the train happens to not be running due to unforeseen events, this short train journey will be replaced with a coach transfer. Today's driving distance is approximately 240km.

Afterwards, enjoy a local lunch and then continue onwards to Shitiping on the coast, where you will find a huge, well-developed sea erosion terrace. The marine bench, raised coral reefs, sea ditches, and sea cliffs can be easily spotted, among which the pothole landscape is the best in Taiwan. Day 5 Taitung - Brown Boulevard - Fangliao - Kaohsiung

This morning visit Brown Boulevard which is a beautiful stretch of pedestrian only road located between the rice paddies and in the shadow of the surrounding mountains on the outskirts of the lovely town of Chishang. The area is famous for its quintessential East Rift Valley scenery which made it the perfect backdrop to an iconic Taiwanese advert for Brown Coffee. Here, you can choose to rent a regular bike or an e-bike, or just walk on foot along the road to soak up the scenery and country air and capture some great photos. During autumn, the harvest season, the paddies will turn golden brown creating even more breathtaking scenery.

Afterwards, transfer to Taitung train station and upon arrival at the train station, board the iconic ‘Breezy Blue’ train. Breezy Blue is a 2021 refurbished train from the 1950s that glides along the southern coast of Taiwan, passing by many forgotten stations. The “romantic blue” train evokes nostalgic memories for the locals who commuted to work and school on the blue diesel-powered train in the past. Serious work and research were done to ensure that travellers can enjoy the most authentic train experience. Everything from the exterior colours of the train to the interior setup was refurbished to recreate the nostalgic train experience. One of the highlights of the train ride is the open windows as you can feel the breeze as the train chugs through the island along the beautiful south coast, taking in the beautiful ocean and mountain views the whole way. The train terminates at Fangliao Station, where you will be met and transferred to the nearby city of Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung is a massive port city in southern Taiwan. It's home to many skyscrapers, such as the 248m-tall Tuntex Sky Tower, and is known for its diversity of parks. Its focal point is the Love River, with walking paths and cafes along its banks and cruise boats navigating its waters. Shopping options range from high-end malls to the Liuhe and Ruifeng night markets. Today's driving distance is approximately 180km, not including the Breezy Blue train journey.

On some days, the clouds are so dense and thick that the mountaintops appear like islands on the cloud ocean.

Afterwards, enjoy a Tsou cultural performance and tea tasting, with the opportunity to purchase the locally-famous indigenous millet wine. The Tsou are an indigenous people of central southern Taiwan. They are an Austronesian ethnic group numbered at around 6,000, making them the seventh-largest indigenous group in Taiwan.

Afterwards, return to Chiayi and transfer back to the hotel, where you will enjoy an evening at leisure. Today's driving distance is approximately 140km.

Overnight: Holiday Inn Express Chiayi or similar, Chiayi

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Toyo Ito, it is often referred to as the "world's ninth new landmark" due to its complex, organic form that mimics the fluidity of nature. Afterwards, continue to Miyahara, housed in the historic former Taichung Miyahara Eye Clinic built in the 1920s during the Japanese colonial period, this building preserves its classic architecture and is now a specialty dessert shop offering ice cream, chocolate and other local delicacies.

Afterwards, travel to Wuqi Fishing Port for lunch (not included), where you may enjoy fresh seafood at your own expense. Continue onwards to Taipei and stop at a pineapple cake factory in New Taipei City. Pineapple cakes became famous in Taiwan in the 1970s when a drop in demand for canned fruit left Taiwan with a massive surplus of pineapples. Local pastry chefs began experimenting with the fruit to create a shelf-stable product. They eventually developed the "pineapple cake" — a buttery, shortbread-like crust filled with pineapple jam which is famous across Taiwan. At the factory, you have the chance to make your own pineapple cakes and either eat them or take them back home with you. Finish the day at your hotel in Taipei. Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

COACH TOUR
Meals:
For meals not included, the tour leader (when available) will offer assistance with reservations, suggestions and directions to local restaurants. It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements.

Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.

Luggage:
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

OTHER
Mobility:
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

A moderate level of fitness will be required.
Expect a moderate pace of touring with a focus on guided tours that may include full days with guided walks of up to 2 hours at a time. You will require a general level of fitness for unassisted navigation of stairs and inclines, longer distances with possible periods of standing when visiting sites, walking on sloping, uneven ground or elevations. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance.
Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Taiwan has restored the visa-exempt entry scheme for nationals of designated countries, including Australia. Please see Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs website for the visa-exempt entry requirements and restrictions.
You won't need a visa for Taiwan if you meet all these conditions:

  • You'll only stay for up to 90 days
  • You're visiting for tourism or business
  • You have a confirmed return or onward air ticket
  • Your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of your entry
  • You're not travelling on an emergency passport

Entry and exit conditions can change. Contact the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) for details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine rules.

Starting October 1, 2025, all non-Taiwan passport holders entering Taiwan will be required to complete an online Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) prior to entry. The paper version will no longer be provided. Travelers must fill out the form within 3 days before arrival. One person may submit information on behalf of up to 16 travelers.

Taiwan Arrival Card Registration Website: https://twac.immigration.gov.tw/

Please note: Passengers who are not Australian citizens must check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required. It is also important to note that some areas of employment such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations may have additional restrictions in applying for Visas. This may in turn affect the type of application required.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
