Day 10 Yangtze River Cruise - Three Gorges Dam/Xiling Gorge

After breakfast, enjoy a shore excursion to the Three Gorges Dam, a stunning example of human achievement and a hallmark of an emerging China. It is the world's largest hydroelectric power station and one of the most massive engineering projects in human history. Spanning 2.3 kilometres in length and standing 185 metres high, the structure generates immense renewable power, controls seasonal river flooding and enables large ship navigation deep into inland China.

Victoria cruise ship departs upstream through the west section of Xiling Gorge in the late afternoon, the first of these dramatic slices through the surrounding mountains. The new reservoir has altered the landscape and, with more than a million people relocated, the scenery is now of a wild countryside and the physical embodiment of thousands of beautiful Chinese landscape paintings. Watch the fog move in as it appears to turn the mountains into ghostly sculptures and enjoy a sumptuous Captain’s Dinner for your evening meal.

At 1,644 metres, of which 1,161 metres has been explored, the Snow Jade Cave is spread over three levels. Inside, both the 8-metre Stone King's Flag (石旗王) and the 4-metre-high Stone King's Shield (石盾王) are the largest of their type in the world. There are also numerous examples of corals.

Day 13 Disembark Yangtze River Cruise - Chongqing Sightseeing

Today your cruise arrives in Chongqing where you will disembark.

Often nicknamed the 'Mountain City' due to its hilly terrain, this vibrant metropolis is a spectacular blend of hyper-modern innovation and ancient history. The city is famous for its mind-blowing urban landscape and complex, multi-layered topography. It's a place where you can exit a building on the ground floor and find yourself on the 22nd floor of a different street.

First you will enjoy a walk outside the Great Hall of the People, an iconic landmark that ranks in the top 10 of classical Asian architecture of the 20th century and the Classic Chinese Centennial Building of the 20th century. Then head to Liziba Subway Station and experience the Chongqing monorail passing directly through a residential building, an architectural marvel that has become very hot in social media. Last enjoy some free time in Hongya Cave, multi-level shopping and dining known for its traditional stilted architecture.

In the afternoon, you can enjoy free time at leisure or join some optional activites

Optional Activity - Ciqikou Ancient Town Tour (Afternoon)
Your optional afternoon will start in Ciqikou Ancient Town, an old town preserved in sprawling modern Chongqing. It's an old sleepy town built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The town's name, Ciqikou, means porcelain harbor, and the community prospered from the porcelain trade. It offers a glimpse of the peaceful laid-back life in Chongqing countryside. Then proceed to Jiefangbei Square. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the government built a seventh floor six-sided cylindrical at the intersection of the national road, the livelihood road, the civil liberties road and the minister road in downtown Chongqing. It was called "people's liberation monument" and originally surrounded with low buildings. Now Jiefangbei is Chongqing's CBD with all the big shops and department stores, here you can see the most prosperous side of Chongqing. Last stop at Kuixing Pavilion, a place where scholars in ancient times prayed and made wishes. With a history of over 200 years, it has now become a popular city landmark among locals and tourists alike.

Day 14 Chongqing – Zhangjiajie (High-Speed Train)

Early in the morning, transfer to Chongqing West Railway Station for a high-speed train ride to Zhangjiajie (approximately 3 hours).

Were you impressed by the Hallelujah Mountains in the film Avatar? The real ones are in Zhangjiajie. There are 243 peaks and more than 3,000 pinnacles and spires in the national park. Scenes from the film come to mind when the peaks are caught in the right light, or when the early morning mountain mist rolls in around them. In 1982, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park became China’s first National Forest Park.

On arrival in Zhangjiajie, take the Ten-Li Gallery Monorail Train (one-way) to see one of the most famous attractions in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park – Ten-Li natural Gallery. There are dense woods, fragrant flowers and grotesque rocks that make the valley seem like a natural art gallery. Over 200 rocks vividly mimic human and animal profiles on both sides of the walking path, extending deep into the valley. Many natural pictures formed on the precipices seem like paintings hanging on the cliffs. Afterwards, visit Gold Whip Stream, a brook at the foot of the towering mountains. The 400-metre-high cliff by Gold Whip Stream is spectacular. One thing to watch out for is the wild monkeys along the stream.

Finish the day at your hotel in Zhangjiaje for an evening at leisure.

Land
Tipping is a firm and customary element of the tourism industry and is therefore expected in China.

The expected tipping amount is $12 AUD or 60 RMB per person per day. While tipping is not mandatory, it is a common practice in China and a gesture of appreciation which is shared amongst the local guides, drivers and other staff members who have serviced your tour. The tipping amount can be paid in AUD or RMB to your expert tour guide in each region. As most tour guides in China consider tipping a part of their income, please don’t feel intimidated should the tour guides approach you as they bid you farewell.

Cruise
Gratuities (tips) are not included for the cruise staff's services throughout this tour's cruise component. Gratuities are expected on your cruise and will be charged at 150 RMB total (approx. $33 AUD) per person for the entire 4-night cruise component of the tour. If you have any questions regarding the gratuities on your cruise, please speak to the guest services staff onboard the ship.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Spring (March - May)
Beijing
Spring in Beijing arrives with a rapid rise in temperature but is often accompanied by strong winds and very dry conditions. Temperatures typically range from about 8ºC to 22ºC. The early part of the season can feel chilly and is occasionally prone to dust storms rolling in from the Gobi Desert. As the season progresses into May, the weather becomes warm and pleasant, offering a popular time to see spring blooms before the summer heat.

Shanghai
Spring in Shanghai is warm and fresh, characterized by blooming flowers and fluctuating weather. Temperatures generally range from about 11ºC to 21ºC, with early mornings feeling cool and afternoons becoming pleasantly warm. Light rain showers and frequent drizzles are common during this transition period. Overall, it is considered an excellent time for tourism and outdoor activities before the summer humidity arrives.

Chongqing
Spring in Chongqing sees a rapid transition to milder, warmer weather, accompanied by frequent cloud cover and light drizzles. Temperatures generally range from about 13ºC to 23ºC. As a mountainous city, morning fog is common during this period, giving way to comfortable afternoons. It offers a pleasant window for outdoor exploration before the intense summer conditions set in.

Summer (June - August)
Beijing
Summer in Beijing is hot, humid, and marks the peak rainy season for the region. Temperatures frequently range between 25ºC and 35ºC, with intense heatwaves occasionally pushing afternoon highs above 38ºC. Heavy downpours and sudden thunderstorms are common, especially in July and August, providing brief relief from the stifling urban heat. The high humidity can make midday outdoor excursions challenging.

Shanghai
Summer in Shanghai is notoriously hot and sticky due to its subtropical climate and high humidity. Temperatures typically range from 26 ºC to 32ºC, but often climb above 35ºC during peak periods. The city experiences the plum rain season in early summer, bringing prolonged overcast skies and heavy precipitation, followed by late summer typhoon risks that can bring sudden storms and strong winds.

Chongqing
Known historically as one of China's 'Three Furnaces', summer in Chongqing is sweltering, exceptionally humid and intense. Temperatures typically range from 26ºC to 36ºC, though prolonged heatwaves regularly push afternoon highs above 40ºC. Rainstorms and muggy nights are frequent, making the humidity feel stifling and outdoor daytime sightseeing demanding.

Autumn (September - November)
Beijing
Autumn is widely considered the most comfortable and beautiful season to visit Beijing. The intense summer heat breaks quickly, giving way to crisp, clear skies and very pleasant weather. Temperatures generally range from 10ºC to 25ºC in early autumn, cooling down sharply by November. The humidity drops significantly, leaving the city dry and sunny, which is perfect for outdoor sightseeing.

Shanghai
Autumn in Shanghai is a highly favored season due to its comfortable and moderate conditions. The sweltering summer heat recedes as temperatures gradually cool down from around 25ºC in September to about 15ºC by late November. The humidity drops noticeably, and the city enjoys clearer, breezier days with less rainfall compared to the summer months, making it ideal for walking tours.

Chongqing
Autumn brings welcome relief from the fierce summer heat, delivering mild temperatures and misty atmospheres. Temperatures range from around 14ºC to 24ºC in September, steadily dropping to around 12ºC by late November. The season is famous for frequent night drizzles and overcast, foggy days, creating cool and comfortable conditions for sightseeing across the city.

Supplier Fees
In the event the tour package you have purchased is unable to proceed, and/or a Travel Supplier is unable to fulfil the tour due to external circumstances (Limitation of Liability e.g. a Force Majeure event), there may be a fee or amount of money that is withheld by our Suppliers and is unrecoverable. This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. If refunds are not available from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. In the event we are unable to obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee.
