Day 7 Puerto Princesa, Philippines

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 17:00

Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan in the Philippines, offers a vastly different experience from Manila’s often overwhelming big-city dynamism. Those who spend some time here will discover a city that combines a laid-back vibe with beautiful sandy beaches and a wealth of marine life. Nearby are lush mountains, rainforests, waterfalls and dramatic limestone cliffs.

Among the most popular sights are the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, where visitors are welcome to celebrate Mass accompanied by choral singing. Don't miss the Palawan Heritage Centre which displays local artworks and crafts. The city's biggest draws are a boat trip through the limestone caves of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, and the beaches and islands scattered around scenic Honda Bay which are perfect for snorkelling.

The most famous restaurant in the city, Kalui, is guaranteed to be a memorable experience for seafood fans. Adventurous foodies can order crocodile sisig, a traditional and delicious stir-fry dish.

Overnight: Holland America's Westerdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 8 Boracay, Philippines (Tender)

Arrive: 10:00 - Depart: 18:00

Discover the idyllic shores of Boracay, a small tropical island in the Philippines where you can relax under rustling palms or partake in thrilling water adventures.

Boracay's most recognised landmark is Willy’s Rock, a tidal island topped with a Virgin Mary shrine. To gain insights into the Philippines' pre-colonial period, consider visiting the Motag Living Museum where you can play traditional games, learn rice-farming methods and make toys from coconut leaves.

Please note: This port is accessed by tender boats. Boarding and disembarking tender boats may involve steps and uneven surfaces. While cruise lines strive to provide ease of access, accessibility options can vary at different tender ports. Passengers with mobility concerns are encouraged to inquire about specific arrangements and consider their individual needs when participating in tendering activities.

Overnight: Holland America's Westerdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Manila, Philippines

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 18:00

Fast-paced and endlessly fascinating, Manila is one of the most densely packed cities in the world with some 1.6 million residents. Characterised by intense contrasts, you'll find soaring skyscrapers next to shantytowns, atmospheric food markets and more.

To immerse yourself in history, head to Manila's oldest neighbourhood of Intramuros which was founded in the 16th century. It's home to sights such as Fort Santiago, Casa Manila and San Agustin Church (entrances not included).

In the upscale financial centre of Makati, you'll find an array of bars, spas and restaurants. Make sure to stop at malls like Glorietta, the landscaped Greenbelt Park and the Ayala Museum which showcases archaeological artefacts and indigenous textiles. In and around Rizal Park are several good museums, while the creative spirit of the city is sprinkled throughout several districts such as the Cultural Centre of the Philippines which host shows, film screenings and plays.

For day trips, Corregidor Island should not be missed.

Day 11 Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 16:00

This attractive city, Taiwan’s second largest and its largest port, offers visitors an alluring blend of ancient and modern culture. The architecture ranges from atmospheric temples and monasteries to soaring commercial skyscrapers and gleaming malls topped with Ferris wheels.

The seafood and noodle stalls around Cijin Island and the Kaisyuan and Jin-Zuan night markets are worth a visit as together, they form the largest night market in Taiwan.

Stroll along Kaohsiung’s impressive harbour to see one of the largest container ports in the world, walk around scenic Lotus Lake with its Chinese pagodas or sit at a bankside cafe on the Love River.

Overnight: Holland America's Westerdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 12 Keelung (Taipei), Taiwan

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Keelung City’s sheltered harbour and its location on Taiwan’s north coast have meant that over the centuries, it has been ruled by the Spanish, Dutch and Chinese. Long a small outpost of the Chinese empire, the city began to grow in the 19th century when settlement from the mainland was encouraged. From 1895 to 1945, Taiwan was occupied by the Japanese. At the end of World War II, Taipei was handed over to the Republic of China, led by Chiang Kai-shek.

In the decades since, it has seen explosive growth but traditional temples and world-class museums still sit amid the skyscrapers. The modern metropolis also has top restaurants, food markets and upscale shopping.

The Taipei Metro makes it easy to explore the city while Taiwan’s capital is just a half hour away by car or around 45 minutes by train.

Overnight: Holland America's Westerdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 13 Ishigaki Island, Japan

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 16:00

Signs of Okinawan culture can be subtle but are easier to pick out in more remote islands of the chain, like Ishigaki. Traditional buildings are a mixture of Chinese and Japanese influences. In the markets, you’ll find fu chanpuru (an Okinawan stir fry dish) and whole-wheat soba, which the Japanese won't touch.

The few people left who speak Uchinaguchi are praying for a movement like the Hawaiian renaissance to bring the culture back and the tipping point is close.

A trip to Ishigaki now is to witness either the beginning or the end.

Overnight: Holland America's Westerdam

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 14 Naha, Japan

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 17:30

Naha, the capital of Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture and its biggest city, also serves as the region’s key political, economic and transportation hub. With a fascinating past as the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom and a working port dating back to the 15th century, this city of 300,000 residents is both compelling and laid-back.

Because it was largely destroyed during World War II, there aren’t many old buildings here. However, a few restored remains from the Ryukyu Kingdom era provide historic interest including Shuri Castle, the royal residence and its extraordinary gardens. Other legendary sites include the Royal Mausoleum (burial tombs set inside caves) and the Shurei Gate which appears on the 2,000-yen note.

Don't miss Kokusai Street with two kilometres of shops and the nearby Makishi Public Market which has dozens of food vendors hawking delicious treats. If you want to explore farther afield, Naha is the ideal jumping-off point for excursions to the rest of Okinawa.

Day 16 Kobe (Osaka), Japan

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 23:00

You'll find that nothing is old in Osaka as the place was flattened during the war, and then again in 1962 and 1989 by Godzilla. Despite this, Osaka has a number of attractions and interesting things to do.

Sumo wrestlers wait for trains, smelling of chanko-nabe (traditional sumo food for pure energy and calories), while busy markets offer non-stop action on shopping streets.

Osaka is also less than an hour from some of the most beautiful temples, shrines and ancient Japanese tourist attractions in the world.

Day 19 Shimizu (Mount Fuji), Japan

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 16:00

Widely regarded as one of Japan’s most beautiful ports, Shimizu affords peerless views of Mount Fuji on a clear day and claims the scenic Miho-no-Matsubara pine forest as a backdrop. The port’s temperate climate and rich culture, heavily connected to the surrounding Shizuoka region, have made it one of the country’s prime sightseeing destinations.

One of the main attractions includes Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, designated a National Treasure by the Japanese government. You can't miss Sumpu Castle which was built in 1586, and Shizuoka Sengen Shrine where warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu held his coming-of-age ceremony.

The broader region offers plenty in the way of picturesque coastal landscapes, tea plantations and a wealth of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. The port itself, famed in the 1900s for its tea exports, is today known for its prodigious tuna haul, which is the biggest in Japan. Samples can be enjoyed in many of the port’s restaurants, along with other local delicacies such as sakura shrimp and shirasu (whitebait).

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 17:00

Situated at the southern tip of Japan, Kagoshima is the capital of the prefecture of the same name and is famous for its dramatic views of Sakurajima volcano. One of the most popular activities is taking a ferry to Sakurajima and hiking along the 100-year-old lava flow which is now a grassy peninsula.

The food scene offers opportunities to experience the area’s rich culinary culture, featuring dishes made with locally caught fish and regional specialties. Don't miss satsuma a’ge (deep-fried fish cake) and shōchū, a traditional beverage produced at more than 100 distilleries in Kagoshima alone.

Although the city was officially founded in 1889, more recent events are covered at a museum dedicated to the kamikaze pilots who flew out of Kagoshima. Other popular attractions include the City Aquarium, the Museum of the Meiji Restoration and the City Museum of Art.

With so much to do, you may want to consider the Cute transit card. Available at tourist information offices, one-day Cute cards cover city buses, trams and Sakurajima ferries and also provide discounted admission to several attractions.

Day 24 Nagasaki, Japan

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 20:00

Situated in the northwest of Kyushu, the third-largest island in Japan, Nagasaki is one of the country’s most cosmopolitan port cities. Home to around 500,000 residents, the city is a buzzy yet relaxed place with abundant services, shops and restaurants. You'll also find several cultural and historic attractions that are easily explored on foot and via public transportation.

Day 25 Busan (Pusan), South Korea

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 21:00

Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city, is located in the southeastern corner of the country along the Sea of Japan. It combines a big-city atmosphere with a famously laid-back attitude. It's often described as the San Francisco of Korea thanks to its hilly terrain and close-knit neighbourhoods. It offers a little of everything with fashionable boutiques, sandy beaches, hot springs and mountains dotted with temples.

Cultural highlights include the Gamcheon Cultural Village, the spectacular Haedong Yonggungsa Temple which is built into the side of a cliff and Art Street in Sinchang-dong.

Those who enjoy hiking can explore the famed cliffs of Taejongdae Park, while the white sand beaches at Gwangalli and Haeundae are ideal places to relax by the seashore.

Foodies will love Busan for its excellent restaurants and atmospheric markets, including the low-key Millak Hoe Town Market and Jagalchi Fish Market.

On the historical side, sites like the Kushida Shrine and the ruins of Fukuoka Castle offer traditional and cultural insights.

Day 28 Scenic Cruising Kanmon Strait

The Kanmon Strait is a narrow channel separating Japan's main islands of Honshu and Kyushu. The channel has long been important to maritime transportation as it connects the Sea of Japan and the Inland Sea.

The battle between the U.S. and Japanese navies that presaged the Shimonoseki Campaign in 1863 took place here, and eventually led to Japan's opening up to Western powers. The cannons used during the campaign can today be seen near Shimonoseki’s port, where you can also dine at gourmet restaurants serving local delicacies such as fugu (blowfish).

The port at Kitakyushu (Moji Port) is equally historic and attractive, serving as a gateway to Honshu and Kyushu for centuries as well as an important international trade hub since the late 19th century. Although more industrial than Shimonoseki, it has many Western-style buildings including the neo-Renaissance Mojiko Station.

A highlight of the Kanmon Strait is an annual fireworks display which is the largest in Japan with more than 13,000 rockets fired from both sides of the strait. The spectacle draws more than a million visitors every August.

Day 29 Hiroshima, Japan

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 18:00

Located in the southwest of Japan, Hiroshima, the main city of the Chugoku region, is set within a striking natural landscape of mountains, sea and rivers. Home to more than one million inhabitants, it’s famous as the site of the explosion of the world’s first atomic bomb, dropped by the U.S. in August 1945. This cataclysm is sensitively documented at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and associated Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The city offers visitors far more than the tragedy of the recent past. In addition to the memorials to the events of World War II, there is an array of shrines and temples, as well as the city’s reconstructed castle, which was originally founded in the 16th century. Nature lovers will be charmed by the historic Shukkei-en Garden, commissioned in 1620, and Miyajima Island, one of the most scenic spots in Japan. The city is home to a number of art institutions, including the Hiroshima Museum of Art, which houses a collection of Impressionist and Japanese oil paintings, the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art and the quirky Mazda Museum. There is also an array of excellent restaurants and bars; the city is known for its okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake, as well as its popular oyster festival each year.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Visit the official K-ETA website for more information.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
