Today, depart Australia (or New Zealand) for Xi'an, China and upon arrival, a tour representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel.

Located in central-northwest China, Xi'an records the great changes of the country just like a living history book. Called Chang'an (the eternal city) in ancient times, it is one of the birthplaces of the ancient Chinese civilisation in the Yellow River Basin area. As the eastern terminal of the Silk Road and the site of the famous Terracotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty, the city has a worldwide reputation. More than 3,000 years of history, including over 1,100 years as the capital city of ancient dynasties, have endowed the city with an amazing historical heritage.

Please note:
• Some travellers may depart on Day 0.
• Some travellers may have an overnight layover in China with accommodation and transfers provided by the airline.
• Some travellers may have an overnight layover in an Australian city with airport accommodation provided (excluding transfers).
• Some travellers may arrive early in the morning of Day 2.

Overnight: Sheraton Xi'an Hotel or similar, Xi'an

Meals included: In-Flight

Day 2 Terracotta Warriors & Horses

Enjoy a sleep-in this morning, then get ready to discover one of China's UNESCO Heritage Listed icons.

The highlight today is a visit to the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum. Unearthed near Xi’an, the thousands of life-size sculptures of soldiers, chariots and horses are considered a world wonder. With different facial expressions and weaponry adorning each soldier, the Terracotta Warriors were believed to have been created to accompany the Qin Emperor into the afterlife. This site is among the top archaeological excavations of the 20th century, and you're sure to be amazed by the scale of the Terracotta Warriors Army.

Afterwards, you'll visit the Terracotta Warriors Reproduction Factory.

Finish the day back at your hotel, where you can enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure, or alternatively take part in an optional activity.

Optional Tour: Xi'an At Night with Grand Tang Dynasty Ever-Bright City & Dinner
Tonight, enjoy an early dinner of local cuisine at a restaurant. You'll then head to Grand Tang Dynasty Ever-Bright City, the only large-scale Tang-style architectural complex pedestrian street in China. As the top destination for showcasing and experiencing Tang culture in Xi’an, it has attracted a large number of tourists with its unique Tang culture and technological exhibitions. Ever-Bright City is brightly lit at night with antique-style buildings shining brilliantly between the turns of light and shadow, recreating the magnificent Tang Dynasty. On the way back to the hotel, the view of the Ancient City Wall is another highlight of the nightlife in Xi'an.

The city is famous for its mind-blowing urban landscape and complex, multi-layered topography. The town's name, Ciqikou, means porcelain harbour, and the community prospered from the porcelain trade. It offers a glimpse of the peaceful laid-back life in Chongqing countryside. Then proceed to Jiefangbei Square. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the government built a 27.5 metres six-sided cylindrical at the intersection of the national road, the livelihood road, the civil liberties road and the minister road in downtown Chongqing.

It was called "people's liberation monument" and originally surrounded by low buildings. Now Jiefangbei is Chongqing's CBD with all the big shops and department stores; here you can see the most prosperous side of Chongqing. Last stop at Kuixing Pavilion, a place where scholars in ancient times prayed and made wishes. With a history of over 200 years, it has now become a popular city landmark among locals and tourists alike. Please see current pricing in Important Information. Not included, paid on tour.

The remainder of the day is free to relax and acclimatise to the high elevation of this area.

Please note
• Parts of this journey into Tibet reach heights above 3,500 metres. Altitude sickness can occur at high elevations when the body receives less oxygen. It can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness, with symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue and shortness of breath. If required, your local guide can arrange oxygen (at an additional cost) to help you settle into the high altitude environment
• A special permit is required for overseas tourists to visit Tibet. It is called the Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), also often referred to as the Tibet Entry Permit or a "Tibet Visa" (though it is not a visa). Overnight: InterContinental Lhasa Paradise by IHG or similar, Lhasa

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 10 Lhasa Sightseeing

Lhasa is a contemporary, fast-growing city, but among the narrow old streets at its heart, you'll feel a million miles from the modern world.

This morning, you will first explore Potala Palace. This is the most iconic landmark of Tibet and the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas (1649-1959). After climbing 365 stone steps from the palace gate to the Red Palace, you’ll reach the highest ancient palace in the world, standing proudly at 3,700 meters above sea level, and enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Lhasa city. The Potala Palace stairs are a significant, challenging climb (hundreds of steps over 13 stories) for visitors, located at a high altitude of 3,700 metres, requiring acclimatisation and rest, but offering incredible views and access to sacred chapels and tombs. If you are unable to do the stairs, you are welcome to opt out of this excursion and wait at the bottom of the stairs whilst the group completes this excursion

As you wander through the halls, chapels, and sacred shrines that honour past Dalai Lamas, you’ll be captivated by the intricate murals, exquisite carvings, dazzling jewelled decorations, and the deep spiritual atmosphere that fills the air. Inside the Potala Palace, countless Tibetan pilgrims can be seen bowing and praying devoutly for many; visiting this sacred site is the journey of a lifetime.

Wander around the Barkhor Circuit to see traditionally dressed locals, stalls of religious trinkets and prostrating pilgrims. Inside the Jokhang Temple, the devotion is palpable as queues of people worship in the flickering light of yak butter candles.

Optional Activity – Princess Wencheng The Musical, Nepali Dinner & Lhasa Night Tour
Epic Tibetan Drama Unfolds: Never Miss the Princess Wencheng Real-Scene Musical in Lhasa. Of all the major historical events in Tibet, the legendary intermarriage between Wencheng, the princess of the Han Empire, and Songtsen Gampo, the Tibetan king of the Tubo Empire, is indeed the most romantic story to delve into. You will be sitting in a huge open-air theatre, expertly designed beside a lofty mountain and enjoying a dazzling array of traditional Tibetan dancing and singing, performed by professional Tibetan actors, actresses and dancers. Dressed in both traditional Tibetan and Han costumes, up to 700 performers will vividly display the legendary journey taken by Princess Wencheng from Chang’an to meet and marry Songtsen Gampo and the subsequent incredible bond forged between the Tubo Empire and the Tang Dynasty, in 5 chapters.

On this optional activity, also enjoy a Nepali dinner, which is a popular cuisine in Tibet due to the historical trade routes with Nepal, along with a Lhasa night tour. The night tour will focus on Lhasa's illuminated landmarks, such as Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple to give you a different perspective on these amazing landmarks

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Spring (March - May)
Xi'An
Spring in Xi'An is a mild and pleasant season, often considered one of the best times to visit. The weather warms up from average lows of about 2 degrees Celsius in March to highs of 27 degrees Celsius by May. While generally pleasant, there is a large temperature difference between day and night, especially in the early part of the season. Rainfall is moderate and gradually increases as the season progresses.

Chengdu
Spring in Chengdu is pleasantly warm and is a very comfortable time for outdoor activities. Temperatures typically range from average lows of 7 degrees Celsius to average highs of 27 degrees Celsius across the three months. The air is generally mild and sometimes humid, with increasing rainfall from March to May, though it is not yet the intense rainy season.

Lhasa
Spring in Lhasa is a time of warming temperatures and increasing sunshine hours, though nights remain very cold due to the high altitude. Daytime temperatures rise from an average high of 11 degrees Celsius in March to around 22 degrees Celsius in May, but average nighttime temperatures still drop to below freezing in early spring, ranging from about minus 4 degrees Celsius to 6 degrees Celsius. The weather is generally very dry and clear, with strong sunlight.

Summer (June - August)
Xi'An
Summer in Xi'An is hot and humid. Temperatures frequently reach average highs of 32 degrees Celsius to 33 degrees Celsius, with extreme highs sometimes exceeding 35 degrees Celsius or more. This is the peak rainy season, with the majority of the annual precipitation falling between July and September. The frequent showers contribute to the high humidity, making midday hours feel quite intense.

Chengdu
Chengdu's summer is hot, humid, and marks the city's rainy season. Average high temperatures range from 28 degrees Celsius to 31 degrees Celsius, though it can feel much hotter due to the humidity. This period sees the bulk of the annual rainfall, with frequent, heavy rain showers and thunderstorms, especially in July and August. Low cloud cover is common, but sunshine hours are at their highest for the year.

Lhasa
Lhasa's summer is mild and is considered the best time to visit, despite being the wettest season. Average daytime temperatures are pleasantly warm, ranging from 19 degrees Celsius to 24 degrees Celsius, with highs sometimes reaching 29 degrees Celsius. The high altitude means nights remain quite cool, with lows around 9 degrees Celsius to 11 degrees Celsius. Most rainfall occurs at night, with frequent showers, but days often remain sunny.

Autumn (September - November)
Xi'An
Autumn is widely considered the most ideal season for visiting Xi'An, as the weather is comfortably cool and pleasant. Average daytime temperatures range from a high of about 26 degrees Celsius in September, rapidly cooling to around 14 degrees Celsius by November. Early autumn still experiences some of the heavier rainfall from the summer season, but precipitation quickly decreases, leading to clearer skies and moderate conditions.

Chengdu
Autumn in Chengdu is characterized by a comfortable and gradual cooling, offering a break from the summer heat. Temperatures typically range from average highs of 26 degrees Celsius to 17 degrees Celsius. Rainfall decreases significantly compared to summer, but the weather can be unpredictable, with sudden changes. It is generally a crisp and pleasant season, perfect for sightseeing.

Lhasa
Autumn in Lhasa is short, dry, and characterized by a quick drop in temperature, particularly at night. Average high temperatures range from about 19 degrees Celsius in September down to 11 degrees Celsius by November. The sky is often clear, with comfortable daytime temperatures, but the lack of humidity makes the air feel very dry. Nights become much colder, with lows dropping to around minus 4 degrees Celsius in November.

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Dietary Requests
Meal options and availability differ between airlines and routes therefore not all dietary requests can be accommodated. If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

COACH TOUR
Meals:
For meals not included, the tour leader (when available) will offer assistance with reservations, suggestions and directions to local restaurants. It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements.

Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.

Luggage:
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

OTHER
Mobility:
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

A moderate level of fitness will be required.

Expect a moderate pace of touring with a focus on guided tours that may include full days with extended activity, guided city tours or nature walks. You will require a moderate level of fitness for unassisted navigation of stairs and inclines, longer distances with possible periods of standing when visiting sites, walking on sloping, uneven ground or elevations. The Potala Palace stairs are a significant, challenging climb (hundreds of steps over 13 stories) for visitors, located at high altitude (3,700m+), requiring acclimatization and rest, but offering incredible views and access to sacred chapels and tombs. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Many areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, where the unassisted use of personal walking sticks and other aids may be required. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.

High Altitude Sickness
Please note that parts of this journey into Tibet reach heights above 3,500 metres. Altitude sickness can occur at high elevations when the body receives less oxygen. It can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness, with symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue and shortness of breath.

Tips to help prevent altitude sickness:
- Stay well hydrated and eat light, high-carbohydrate meals.
- Avoid overexertion during the first 24–48 hours at high altitude.
- Limit alcohol and avoid smoking.
- Consult your healthcare professional about preventive medications or your suitability for travel to high-altitude areas.

If required your local guide can arrange oxygen (at an additional cost) to help you settle into the high altitude environment

Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Wildlife sighting:
TripADeal cannot guarantee animal sightings on tour. Wildlife are unpredictable and factors such as weather conditions, predatory fear and animal movements can impact sightings.

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Australian and New Zealand citizens qualify for Visa-free travel to China for stays up to 30 days but require a special permit to visit Tibet.

The special permit required for overseas tourists to visit Tibet is called the Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), also often referred to as the Tibet Entry Permit or a "Tibet visa" (though it is not a visa). This permit is included in your booking and you will be required to provide a photo passport copy to TripADeal no later than 90 days to your travel date so we may arrange this permit on your behalf. As a condition of this permit you are not to deviate from the group itinerary at all whilst visiting Tibet.

The visa exemption is set to expire on the 31st December 2026. Eligibility criteria will apply. Please consult Smart Traveller and your nearest Chinese consulate for up-to-date eligibility criteria and information.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
