Day 2 Okinawa's History, Culture, and Natural Wonders

Your adventure begins as you depart from your hotel and head to your first stop, the magnificent Shuri Castle, the political, diplomatic, and cultural heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom for centuries. A registered UNESCO World Heritage site, the castle's striking vermilion-coloured buildings showcase a unique architectural style that blends Chinese and Japanese influences. Though parts of the castle were destroyed in 1945, it has been beautifully restored, allowing you to step back in time and imagine the lives of the Ryukyuan royalty, and explore the castle grounds, including its impressive stone walls and sacred sites.

Next, a short transfer takes you to the bustling Itoman Fish Market, where, you can immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of a traditional Okinawan market. You'll have the opportunity to see the day's freshest catches and enjoy a delicious lunch (not included). From fresh sashimi and sushi to grilled seafood skewers, there's a wide variety of local delicacies to tempt your tastebuds.

Afterwards the tour takes a more reflective turn with a visit to the Okinawa Peace Memorial Park. Located on Mabuni Hill, the site of the final, fierce fighting during WWII's Battle of Okinawa, the park is a moving tribute to the more than 200,000 people who lost their lives. The Cornerstone of Peace, a series of granite walls inscribed with the names of the fallen, is a powerful reminder of the human cost of war. Explore the park's monuments and museums, and reflect on Okinawa's journey towards peace.

The day concludes with an exploration of Okinawa World Cultural Kingdom, a theme park that offers a deep dive into Okinawan culture and nature. A highlight of your visit will be a powerful Eisa dance performance, a traditional folk dance with energetic drumming that honours the spirits of ancestors. You'll also descend into the stunning Gyokusendo Cave, a 300,000-year-old limestone cave, the longest on the island. After exploring the cave's spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, enjoy free time to wander through the replica of a traditional Ryukyu Kingdom village before returning to your hotel in Naha and enjoy the remainder of the evening at leisure.

Overnight: Hewitt Resort, Naha, Okinawa

Day 3 Okinawa's Coastal Scenery, Castle Ruins, and Modern Delights

Today head north to the stunning Kouri Bridge & Kouri Ocean Tower. The bridge itself offers breathtaking views of the turquoise water as you cross over to Kouri Island, also known as "Love Island". Once there, you'll ascend the 82-metre-high Kouri Ocean Tower for a panoramic vista of the coastline. The tower also houses some shops and a shell museum with over 10,000 shells from around the world.

From Kouri Island, journey to the historic Nakijin Castle Ruins, another UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 13th century, these ruins offer a glimpse into the Sanzan Period of Okinawan history. The castle's impressive 1.5-kilometre-long walls are a testament to its former glory. Explore the ruins and be treated to spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and the East China Sea.

In the afternoon, travel to Yomitan Village for a relaxing break at the Hoshino Banta Cafe. This modern cliffside cafe is one of the largest seaside cafes in Japan and offers a stunning setting to unwind. Enjoy a refreshing drink (included) while taking in the magnificent ocean views.

The final stop of the day is the vibrant Mihama American Village in Chatan. This large entertainment complex offers a unique blend of American and Okinawan culture. Many American military bases are located in the area, and the Americana themed entertainment complex provides a nostalgic pleasure for residents of the bases as well as an interesting diversion for the locals. With its many shops, restaurants, and a lively atmosphere, it's a great place for some free time and souvenir shopping. You'll have an hour and a half to explore the village before heading back to your hotel in Naha, or alternatively you may stay longer and make your own way back to the hotel via public transport.

Today's travel is approximately 180 kilometres.

Day 6 Taipei Skyscrapers & Sky Lanterns Tour

This morning depart Taipei and travel to the nearby Pingxi district to enjoy a quick ride along the Pingxi Branch Line - a 13-kilometre stretch of narrow-gauge railroad that runs alongside the Keelung River. Taking a ride on the Pingxi Line is like taking a step back in time and is one of the most popular day trips from Taiwan.

Step of the train in the town of Shifen, a popular town for launching sky lanterns. Sky lanterns are a Taiwanese tradition and the Pingxi district is one of the few places where you are still allowed to launch them. The paper lanterns inscribed with one's hopes for the coming year are launched into the sky and the preferred place to launch them is right on the tracks which makes for some great people watching. Here you will have the opportunity to launch a sky lantern (four travellers to one sky lantern).

Afterwards continue to the small mountainous village of Jiufen, made famous largely due to its similarity to the village in Spirited Away, arguably Hayao Miyazaki’s most popular movie. Enjoy time at leisure to explore Jiufen and perhaps have lunch (not included). We suggest you explore the picturesque Old Street, a narrow alleyway lined with small food stalls, tea houses, souvenir shops, and pottery stores. The most picturesque tea house in Jiufen is A-Mei Teahouse. This multi-story teahouse is strategically located just a little off the main street, perched on top of a hill. From their balcony, you can admire the picturesque view of Keelung Mountain to the right and the Northern shores of Taiwan on the left.

Afterwards continue back to Taipei, and see the famous Taipei 101, once the world's tallest building at 508 metres tall (101 floors), holding the title from 2004 until 2010. Enjoy some time at leisure to shop in the mall at the base of the tower and finish the day back at your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Please note: Entrance up to the top of the Taipei 101 observatory is not included, and would only be available to purchase on tour if time permits.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Taiwan
Taiwan has restored the visa-exempt entry scheme for nationals of designated countries, including Australia. Please see Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs website for the visa-exempt entry requirements and restrictions.
From 1 October, travellers must complete a Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) within 3 days before arrival in Taiwan. The TWAC should be submitted online through the Ministry of the Interior National Immigration Agency website https://twac.immigration.gov.tw/.

Japan
A tourist visa is not required for Australian or New Zealand citizens visiting Japan for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, visiting friends or relatives, business that does not include remunerative activities.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
