After lunch, continue along the Rhine River to Cologne. Founded by the Romans in AD 50, Cologne is one of the oldest cities in Germany and was almost completely rebuilt after the destruction during World War II. Look out for the twin spires of its Gothic cathedral, known locally as the Kolner Dom.

Gracing the banks of the Rhine River, Basel is known for its high concentration of museums, showcasing anything from contemporary art to scientific achievements. Today, after breakfast, it’s time to bid farewell to your Emerald Star-Ship and fellow guests, taking memories of the dazzling jewels of Europe.

Upon disembarking make your own way to your centrally located hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure in the beautiful city of Basel. See the medieval old town centre of Marktplatz and the 12th-century Gothic cathedral, which contains the tomb of the 16th-century Dutch scholar, Erasmus.

The heart of the city beats in Basel’s well-preserved, romantic Old Town, its narrow streets and hidden squares hold more than 300 fountains that are just as charming as its many centuries-old buildings and eye-catching sights.

Outbound Flights

Missed Flights
If you fail to arrive for your outbound flight, you risk all flight and land arrangements in your destination being automatically cancelled by the airlines and land operator, respectively. Additional fees may apply to reinstate these services. If you miss your flight for whatever reason, please contact us as soon as possible to make arrangements.

Trip Only Package
If you choose to remove international flights from your package, your holiday may be shorter, as travel days for flights are not included in the Trip Only Package. You will receive an email confirmation when minimum numbers have been met and the departure is guaranteed.
We recommend making further travel arrangements, such as flights, after you have received confirmation of a guaranteed departure.

Emerald River Cruises is an internationally registered company and operates to US and European standards, both of which have an economy driven by a tipping culture. CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
In May, you will find the average daily temperature is around 16°C, which is very pleasant but tends to drop to 11°C at night. At the warmest time of the day, temperatures are known to rise as high as 23°C.
In August is generally warm and sunny, with average daytime highs around 24°C to 26°C and lows dropping to a comfortable 13°C to 14°C at night.
The weather in central Euroope in October is cool and crisp, with daytime highs averaging around 13°C to 15°C and nighttime lows dropping to about 6°C .

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Dietary Requests:
Meal options and availability differ between airlines and routes therefore not all dietary requests can be accommodated. If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.

Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

Fitness Level Required:

This may include city tours, the ability to walk up and down small flights of stairs and gentle slopes. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance.

Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.

European Union Entry/Exit System (EES)
From October 12, 2025, a new European Entry System (EES) replaced the manual passport-stamping process for non-EU travellers. Upon arrival in the Schengen area, Australian and New Zealand passport holders will have their fingerprints recorded and a photograph taken. Their entry and exit dates will be electronically registered. No previous action is required, but please be aware of longer wait times at border entry. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of all the European countries (Schengen area) using the system.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)
As an extension of the EES implementation introduced in 2025, ETIAS travel authorisation is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries, including Australian and New Zealand citizens, that will be introduced in 2026. We advise you to monitor smartraveller.gov.au closer to your departure to ensure you are up to date on the requirements at the time of entry.

This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. If refunds are not available from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. In the event we are unable to obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee.
