First up, step into the hushed tranquility of the Meiji Shrine, a breathtaking Shinto sanctuary consecrated to the Imperial Family in 1926. Wander along gravel paths lined by towering, ancient trees as your guide explains the history and rituals associated with this sacred shrine. Next up, visit the Imperial Palace, built on the site of the former Edo Castle, has a history dating back to the 15th century, with the current palace structure completed in 1968. Leaving behind the city's vibrant clamour, immerse yourself in a vast, verdant oasis, a sprawling 1.15 square kilometres of meticulously manicured gardens and tranquil moats, a testament to centuries of imperial tradition nestled within the heart of Chiyoda Ward.

The introductory tour will end around lunchtime, and you’re free to explore this amazing city at your own leisure in the afternoon.

Day 4 Tokyo – Mt Fuji – Matsumoto

After breakfast, drive to Mt Fuji’s 5th Station. Located 2300m above sea level, this observation point offers a commanding view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below, making it a popular spot even for those who do not intend on climbing the mountain, and it features shrines, torii gates and souvenir shops.

Afterwards, continue to Lake Kawaguchiko, nearby in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, to admire the scenery as you enjoy a short cruise across the lake. The waters are overlooked by surrounding mountains, including Mt Fuji and Mt Komagatake. On a still, clear day, you can see a perfect mirror image of Mt. Fuji reflected in the lake.

Continue onwards to Matsumoto and check into the hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Matsumoto is a charming city nestled in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan, surrounded by the breathtaking Japanese Alps. Historically known as Fukashi, it flourished as a castle town, most notably around the magnificent Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's few remaining original castles and a designated National Treasure. The city's history dates back centuries, with the castle's origins in the early 16th century.

Today's journey is approximately 350 kilometres.

Overnight: Tabino Hotel Lit Matsumoto or similar, Matsumoto

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Matsumoto Castle - Free Afternoon

Step back in time on a guided tour of Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's premier historic castles, dating back to the early 16th century. Originally known as Fukashi Castle, its fortifications were first established around 1504 during the tumultuous Warring States period.

The impressive five-tiered, six-story keep that stands today has earned the nickname "Crow Castle" for its striking black exterior. It was largely constructed in the late 16th century, around 1594, making it one of Japan's oldest surviving original castle keeps. Wander through its iconic black and white facade as your learn stories of its feudal past, including its role as a strategic military base and the various clans who controlled it, from the Ogasawara to the Ishikawa and beyond, under the Edo Period Tokugawa shogunate.

Explore the castle's interior, discovering hidden defences, armoury displays showcasing samurai weaponry, and learning about the architectural ingenuity designed to thwart invaders. Ascend to the top floor for panoramic views of the surrounding city and the majestic Japanese Alps.

The afternoon is free at leisure to explore Matsumoto.

Overnight: Tabino Hotel Lit Matsumoto or similar, Matsumoto

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Matsumoto – Shirakawa Go - Takayama - Kanazawa

Today is a fun day to explore the countryside of Japan in a trip of approximately 380 kilometres to see how local people live.

Visit Shirakawa-go, declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995, famous for traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.

Afterwards, visit Takayama Old Town and walk along Sannomachi Street, which survives in a particularly pretty state with many old homes, shops, and restaurants. Takayama was once a bustling hub drawing expert artisans, farmers and merchants from throughout the surrounding area. The traditional aesthetic has been preserved from this time, and as you enter this district, you'll step into the closest thing to the Edo period outside of a historical drama.

Finish the day in Kanazawa where you will check into your hotel and enjoy an evening at leisure.

Kanazawa remains an important city in its region and serves as the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture. The city boasts many historical attractions such as restored residences and districts, as well as modern museums. But Kanazawa's unchallenged main attraction is Kenrokuen, one of Japan's "three best landscape gardens" and by many considered the most beautiful of them all.

Overnight: Kanazawa Kosusai Hotel or similar, Kanazawa

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Kanazawa - Kyoto

This morning start a 260 kilometre trip to Kyoto, but first, visit Kenrokuen, justifiably classified as one of Japan's "most beautiful landscape gardens". Opened to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees that provide the garden with a different look for each season. Kanazawa is home to 99% of all gold leaf made in Japan. Today you will enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience of attending a Gold Leaf Craft workshop to see the gold leaf process and decorate your own items.

Afterwards, proceed to Kyoto and enjoy the remainder of the day at your own pace.

Kyoto (京都, Kyōto) served as Japan's capital and the emperor's residence from 794 until 1868. Over the centuries, due to its exceptional historic value, Kyoto's countless temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures still survive in the city today.

Overnight: Crystal Hotel Kyoto IV or similar, Kyoto

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Kyoto Sightseeing Tour - Nara - Osaka

Today enjoy a half-day sightseeing tour of the ancient capital of Kyoto.

Visit Kiyomizu-dera, one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It was founded in 780 and was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites in 1994. Kiyomizu-dera is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside which offers amazing views across the city.

Afterwards, visit the iconic Temple of the Golden Pavilion, which is perhaps the most breathtaking in Kyoto. Also known as “Kinkaku-ji,” the temple’s top two floors are coated in gold leaf, creating a dazzling mirror image in the pond on which it’s built. Enjoy a walk at Ninenzaka, Kyoto’s best old street lined with historic Japanese-style buildings that typify Kyoto.

Travel to nearby Nara to visit Nara Park. This is home to more than a thousand deer, considered the messengers of the gods and as a symbol of the city have been designated national treasure status. Deer crackers are for sale around the park and you'll find some deer have learned to bow to visitors to ask to be fed.

Finish the day in Osaka where you will check into your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Today's journey is approximately 100 kilometres.

Overnight: Hotel Sobial Osaka Dome or similar, Osaka

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9 Osaka Free Day

Today, relax at the hotel, explore Osaka at your own pace or take an optional tour to discover Hiroshima.

On arrival, continue to Miyajimaguchi by coach or train, then board a boat to the majestic Miyajima Island. Disembark and discover the natural and cultural treasures of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed island for 45 minutes with your guide. See the shimmering Itsukushima Shrine, then revitalise with a delicious lunch in a local eatery (not included). Re-board the boat and return to Hiroshima to reflect on the region's history.

Take a moment of contemplation at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a historical site near where the atomic bomb exploded. See exhibitions that articulate the destruction the bomb caused and marvel at the city's regenerative recovery. Finally, visit the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), a skeletal structure that miraculously survived the 1945 bombing.

Return to the train station for the exhilarating journey back to Osaka on the bullet train, the tour concludes with a transfer back to your hotel.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Visas

A tourist visa is not required for Australian or New Zealand citizens visiting Japan for stays of up to 90 days for tourism.

We recommend you use the Visit Japan Web to pre-register your details before arrival. Visit Japan Web is a web service to help smooth the arrival procedure at the airport in Japan. You can pre-register your information for Immigration and Customs procedures ahead of your trip, including the disembarkation card for visa exemption (for eligible travellers such as Australians). Once you have registered, you can use the QR codes from the service instead of paper forms as part of the procedures to enter Japan.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
