So, what is it really like to experience Norway with us?
“Hi, well…..what can I say. It was one of the most enjoyable holidays I’ve ever had. From the start the group which you really have no control over was wonderful, it didn’t matter where or who I sat with I was comfortable…the places we stayed were beautiful not just the accommodation which I must say was exceptional but the towns & of course the famous Flam train loved loved it❤️”

Before we start, here are some good-to-knows
• It’s one of the safest places in the world: The region is widely considered to be safe, with a generally high standard of living and income equality. Beware of pickpockets in high-traffic tourist areas in Oslo.
• You don’t need to worry about language barriers: English is common and taught in schools, so most people speak it well. Your guide is fluent and can handle any translation issues along the way (they rarely come up!).
• Norway is generally cashless: Like Australia, the area is predominantly cashless, with most transactions on card. It’s still good to keep a small amount of the local currency, Norwegian Krone, for incidentals and any tips on tours.
• You don’t have to tip at bars and restaurants: Rounding up the bill is considered polite.
• Anytime is the perfect time to go: Whatever dates you choose, you’ll be in for a treat with incredible scenery and experiences year-round.

“I loved everything. The locations we went to were designed for maximum impact and they didn’t disappoint. The hotels were good and had good breakfasts. Although a fairly packed itinerary there was still some free time to enjoy unplanned activities.”

When is the best time to go to Norway?
There’s no bad time to go to Norway. Regardless of the season, this amazing Nordic country will show you a completely different side that is always appealing.
Sitting far north of the Tropic of Cancer, Scandinavian countries see extremes of light and weather in both summer and winter, ensuring a completely different experience, depending on your choice.
If you want to experience long days of sunlight, giving you more hours to see the sights, then summer is your best option as you get all the benefits of the midnight sun (known as white nights in the more southern parts).

What’s it like to travel to Norway in summer?
Summer is stunningly beautiful with lush greens, blooming wildflowers, warm temperatures and cascading waterfalls fuelled by seasonal snow melt. If you’re there at the right time, you may even experience midsummer festivities. With half the year cold, the Norwegians know how to make the most of their summertime.

With the long nights, make sure to bring an eye mask. Pack for a mild Aussie winter. Some days, you’ll be fine in short sleeves, but on other days (or the further north you go), you may be reaching for a jumper or light coat.

What’s it like to travel to Norway in winter?
If you’re hoping to catch the northern lights or experience a frozen wonderland, winter is your time. While it is colder and darker, with some summer attractions closed for the season, it’s also remarkably cozy. You can fully embrace the Nordic concept of hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”), a deep sense of comfort, warmth, and well-being. Enjoy hot chocolate, mulled wine, crackling fireplaces and heart-warming stews, browse festive holiday markets, and seek out the vibrant auroras, a phenomenon invisible to summer travellers.

The shoulder seasons of autumn and spring offer variable weather, but come with unique seasonal highlights: watch the countryside burst into vibrant autumn foliage, or enjoy the fresh spring blossoms emerging after months of winter darkness.
What is a guided tour like?
We work with local experts on the ground who are truly knowledgeable and friendly. Our English-speaking guides are well-studied in the region and able to add value at every turn, whether throwing in a random, thought-provoking piece of history, or letting you in on things to see if you have time at leisure.
“Our tour leader Stefano and bus driver Bjorn were fantastic. Worked hard and went above and beyond to ensure everything went smoothly. Norway scenery was a feast for your eyes. We saw and learnt so much.”

More than just a guide, they are also the ring master, the facilitator, the organiser and time keeper. They are there to put your mind at ease when any questions or issues arise and to ensure everything runs seamlessly, from sticking to tight itineraries to confirming that the night’s accommodation is ready and that check-ins run smoothly. And that’s no mean feat, with tours like the Iconic Northern Lights Rail and Sail, that involves getting a tour group moving between buses, trains, snowmobiles, dog sleds and cruise ships – all done seamlessly.
What are Norwegian hotels like?
Norwegian hotels range from sleek Scandinavian designs that maximise space to mid-century modern and cozy rustic styles. They are clean and well-appointed, though some may lack in-room coffee-making facilities (though generous buffet breakfasts are typically included).
Generally, we’ll book hotels in Norway in central locations. One reality of travelling in Europe, especially in regional and remote areas, is that some hotels are smaller than the ones in Australia and New Zealand, making it a cosy Scandinavian haven to retreat to at the end of your day.
What’s it like to be in a tour group for Norway?
TripADeal tours attract a diverse mix of travellers across various age groups, from young adults to energetic seniors. You’ll find a welcoming combination of couples, independent travellers and friends.

A great planning resource is Facebook, where you’ll find our very own TripADeal Tips and Tricks group with advice from people who’ve been to Norway before and our TripADeal Travel Buddies group for those looking for other solo travellers going on the same tour. Generally, you’ll be with Aussies and Kiwis, so there’s plenty of common ground to build upon.
