This morning, after breakfast, set off on a city tour of Lima, starting with a brief stop at the Huaca Pucllana Archaeological Site, an ancient pre-Inca ceremonial centre, before continuing to Lima’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic centre.

Explore the Plaza de Armas, the heart of the city, surrounded by grand colonial and Republican-era buildings with their signature carved wooden balconies. Iconic landmarks border the square, including the Government Palace, Lima Cathedral, Archbishop’s Palace, Municipal Palace and the Palace of the Union.

From the square, walk to the Convent of San Francisco, one of Peru’s most important religious sites. Founded in the 1530s and completed in 1766, this remarkable complex has withstood centuries of earthquakes. Inside, its historic library preserves over 25,000 rare volumes in Spanish, English and Quechua — some dating back to the 16th century.

The convent is built around a tranquil courtyard planted with mango and lucuma (yellow sapote) trees, while its walls feature striking murals of St Francis of Assisi. Among the highlights are a golden Baroque altarpiece and Diego de la Puerto’s famous 1696 painting of The Last Supper — notably featuring guinea pigs and potatoes on the table.

Descend into the eerie San Francisco Catacombs, Lima’s largest. Once a burial site for more than 25,000 people, the catacombs were in use until 1808 and rediscovered in 1947. Today, they fascinate visitors with their macabre yet intriguing arrangements of bones in geometric patterns.

After this memorable exploration of Lima’s history, return to the hotel where you can enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Upon arrival, enjoy a welcome drink made from local fruits before settling into your bungalow and sitting down for lunch. Afterward, an experienced bilingual guide will lead you along an interpretive trail to Caiman Cocha, a small lake where you can observe black and spectacled caimans.

Some experiences may take you above the forest floor for a different perspective across the canopy, while others focus on the plants, trees, and the way the ecosystem functions as a whole. The Cusco half day tour begins in the morning with a visit to the imposing Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, perched high on a hill overlooking the city. Here, you will marvel at some of the finest examples of Inca masonry in existence, featuring enormous, multi-ton boulders meticulously cut and fitted together with extraordinary precision.

After exploring this monumental citadel, the tour climbs higher to Q’enqo, one of the Inca civilisation's most intriguing archaeological sites. Meaning "labyrinth" or "zigzag" in Quechua, this enigmatic sanctuary offers a fascinating blend of history, spirituality, and unique rock architecture, alongside sweeping panoramic views across the valley.

Next, the excursion visits the serene Tambomachay Archaeological Complex. While its exact historical purpose remains a mystery, it likely served as a royal retreat or an Inca ceremonial spa. Incan hydraulic engineering shines here, showcasing a sophisticated network of aqueducts, canals, and waterfalls cascading through terraced stone.

From there, the tour returns toward the city centre to explore the breathtaking Qorikancha, situated adjacent to the Church of Santo Domingo. As the most sacred temple in the Incan Empire, its walls were once covered in sheets of pure gold and lined with life-sized golden statues. Though stripped of its treasures during the Spanish conquest, the surviving stone structure remains a magnificent testament to Incan devotion, filled with architectural nuances the private guide will bring to life.

The journey concludes at the monumental Cusco Cathedral, located in the historic Plaza de Armas. Built between 1560 and 1654 over the foundations of an ancient Inca temple, this spectacular cathedral houses renowned paintings from the Cusco School of art, as well as an ornate main altar covered in gold and silver leaf. As you explore, the guide will highlight subtle indigenous symbols cleverly woven into the structure by native artisans, such as a jaguar carved into the wooden doors.

To end the tour, the guide will bid you farewell, offering personalised recommendations for lunch or dinner at local restaurants, or providing simple directions for your return to the hotel.

Please note: Cusco is located in the Peruvian Andes at 3,399 metres above sea level, high altitude environments are classified as above 2,500 metres above sea level. The capital city of the Inca Empire is the archaeological capital of the Americas, as well as the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city. Alternatively, you can choose to participate in an optional activity.

Optional Activity: Maras & Moray
Embark on a captivating half-day tour of Maras and Moray, beginning with a pickup from your Cusco hotel at approximately 09:00. The journey to Moray takes about 1.5 hours, offering breathtaking views of the Andean landscape along the way. Pass golden wheat fields, charming traditional villages, and majestic snow-capped mountains.

Upon arrival at Moray, explore its fascinating amphitheatre-like terraced structures. These circular terraces, believed to have been an agricultural laboratory for the Incas, showcase their innovative techniques for optimising crop growth. It's a truly awe-inspiring site that highlights the ingenuity of the Inca Empire.

Next, you'll visit Maras, located just 3km from Moray. Here, you'll marvel at the ancient salt evaporation ponds carved into the mountainside. More than 3,000 pools collect salty spring water that evaporates to leave behind the renowned sal de Maras, a prized pink salt still harvested today. The view of these glistening ponds, resembling a blanket of snow or ice, is unforgettable.

After exploring Maras, you'll return to Cusco, with drop-off at your hotel included. Please see the current pricing in the Important Information section. Highest Altitude: 3,500 metres above sea level. Lowest Altitude: 3,380 metres above sea level.

Continue to the Quesiuno trailhead, perched at an impressive 4,326 metres above sea level. The hike covers approximately 3.6 kilometres on a round-trip (1.8 kilometres each way) along a gentle path, making it one of the more accessible routes to Rainbow Mountain.

As you walk, take in sweeping vistas of snow-capped peaks, traditional Andean villages, and herds of alpacas and llamas grazing across the high plains. After around 1 hour and 20 minutes of walking, arrive at the summit of Rainbow Mountain, standing at 5,036 metres.

You’ll have time to admire the incredible mineral-rich stripes that create the mountain’s vibrant colours and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Your return trek takes approximately one hour, followed by a well-earned lunch in the area.

Afterwards, sit back and relax as you make the 2.5-hour drive back to Cusco, arriving at your hotel around 18:00, concluding an unforgettable day in the Andes. Please see the current pricing in the Important Information section.

Please note: The Rainbow Mountain trek via Pitumarca requires a moderate to high level of fitness. The trail is relatively gentle compared to other routes, but the high altitude remains the main challenge. Consulting with your GP prior to travel to assess your suitability for this excursion is recommended.

Arriving beside the sacred Urubamba River, the excursion arrives at the picturesque village of Pisac to explore its vibrant traditional market. Here, visitors can browse an extraordinary array of local artisan crafts and handmade souvenirs during a 30-minute visit, before ascending the hill to the dramatic Pisac archaeological site guarding the valley entrance.

At the Pisac ruins, a 90-minute guided tour leads through extensive ancient structures that once served as homes, storage rooms, and sacred temples. Guests will discover intricate Inca altars, carved stone tunnels, hidden caves, and the legendary Intihuatana, the "hitching post of the sun", all set against breathtaking panoramic views of the valley.

Continue to Urubamba for lunch (not included), before driving on to Ollantaytambo, one of the most important Inca sites. Once the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti, Ollantaytambo is both a living town and an archaeological wonder. Explore the Temple of the Sun, admire the colossal stone blocks shaped with astonishing precision, and learn about the Inca’s advanced agricultural terraces and sophisticated water systems.

The final stop of the journey is the traditional highland village of Chinchero, set against a stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Chicon and Veronica peaks. Please note: You will need to prepare a smaller backpack (maximum 8 kilograms) to take with you to Aguas Calientes (luggage cannot be taken on the train). Larger suitcases will be transferred to the hotel in Cusco for your return.

Overnight: Hotel Pakaritampu or similar, Ollantaytambo

Today, transfer to the train station in Ollantaytambo and board the Peru Expedition Train for a spectacular journey to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.

As the train winds its way along the Urubamba River, be treated to breathtaking views of the Sacred Valley, with steep mountains rising dramatically on either side. The scenery shifts from fertile agricultural terraces and quaint Andean villages to lush cloud forest, where cascading waterfalls and dense greenery signal your approach to the edge of the Amazon.

Nestled at the base of the mountains leading to Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes blends traditional Andean life with a vibrant tourist scene. The largely pedestrianised town is filled with colourful markets, souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants, making it a lively place to explore on foot.

Framed by jungle-clad cliffs and with the Urubamba River rushing past, the setting is both dramatic and enchanting. The town is also famous for its natural hot springs, where you’ll have time to unwind in the steaming pools after your journey (not included). You can also stroll through the bustling streets, browse local handicrafts, and soak up the atmosphere of this unique settlement.

An early evening is recommended to rest and prepare for an early start tomorrow - a sunrise visit to the iconic Machu Picchu.

Optional Activity: Express Inca Trail Trek
Physical ability: Active (please refer to the Other Important Information section for a description). You will be picked up early (approximately 06:00).

Board the train for a 1.5-hour scenic ride to a point known as Kilometre 104 to start your short Inca Trail trek. From here, you will hike for approximately four hours to the Inca site of Winay Wayna (“Forever Young”), approximately 2,680 metres above sea level. Built on a steep hillside overlooking the Urubamba River, this archaeological site has ten baths and numerous Inca buildings displaying high levels of Inca masonry.

Winay Wayna was discovered almost 30 years after the entire world knew about Machu Picchu and 40 years after Machu Picchu was first discovered. Little is known about what Winay Wayna was originally built for, however there are theories that it was built as a spiritual destination or resting place before reaching Machu Picchu, where elders and royalty would cleanse themselves in the baths. Others believe that the site functioned as a kind of administrative centre to keep track of the amount of produce stored on-site.

After exploring Winay Wayna, you will continue your walk to Inti Punku (the Puerta del Sol, or The Sun's Gate). From here, you will have your first spectacular view of Machu Picchu. This site was believed to have once been the main entrance to Machu Picchu and was dedicated to Inti, the Inca Sun God.

You’ll then head to Aguas Calientes where your afternoon will be spent at leisure.

Please note that due to the nature and duration of this tour, a moderate to active fitness level is required for participation in this supplementary trek. The route includes uneven surfaces, steep ascents and descents, a mix of stairs and dirt trails, and high-altitude conditions.

The trek spans approximately 12 km (6–8 hours) of walking, including steps for photos, lunch (included) and exploring. If you have any concerns about your ability to complete this trek, we recommend consulting your GP for guidance. Current pricing details can be found on the Important Information section.

Please note: Express Inca Trail Trek tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. Once purchased, this optional activity cannot be refunded.

Meals included: Breakfast

After exploring this monumental citadel, the tour climbs higher to Q’enqo, one of the Inca civilization's most intriguing archaeological sites.

From there, the tour returns toward the city center to explore the breathtaking Qorikancha, situated adjacent to the Church of Santo Domingo.

To end the tour, the guide will bid you farewell, offering personalized recommendations for lunch or dinner at local restaurants, or providing simple directions for your return to the hotel.

Please note: Cusco is located in the Peruvian Andes at 3,399 metres above sea level, high altitude environments are classified as above 2,500 metres above sea level. Here, visitors can browse an extraordinary array of local artisan crafts and handmade souvenirs during a 30-minute visit, before ascending the hill to the dramatic Pisac archaeological site guarding the valley entrance.

After breakfast, depart from the hotel to visit the iconic Christ The Redeemer.

The statue sits 700 metres above Rio and has fascinated visitors and historians for nearly a hundred years. It is one of the world's largest statues of Jesus Christ, and it has Art Deco-style sculptures on the planet. In 2007, the statue was deemed one of the World's New Seven Wonders.

Perched on the summit of Mount Corcovado in Rio, the statue stands at a whopping 30 metres tall (making it two-thirds the height of New York’s Statue of Liberty) and its outstretched arms reach 28 metres horizontally. Not only is the statue the most recognizable landmark of Rio, but it has also become a cultural icon of Brazil.

Continue to visit the impressive Selaron Stairs: Jorge Selaron’s unique and vivid mosaic steps. The Escadaria Selaron, 125 metres of steps covered in bright tile, is a product of sheer determination by Selaron, and it acts as a source of inspiration for the neighbourhood.

After the tour, return to the hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
