Day 5 Heimaey Island, Westman Islands, Iceland

Exploring The Outer Islands of Heimaey
Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 11:00

Join your expedition team for a Zodiac cruise around the bird cliffs of Heimaey Island. Keep your eyes peeled for the clowns of the sea, the puffins. This cruise offers an excellent chance to observe these unique birds up close. The journey will take you to a tranquil inner bay near the town and if weather permits, towards the seaside of the cliffs.

Heimaey, Westman Islands
Arrive: 12:00 - Depart: 19:00

Heimaey Island is the largest of the Westman Islands, located six kilometres off the south-west coast of Iceland. One of the most visually impressive islands in Iceland, it is ringed by tall, vertical sea cliffs many hundreds of metres high.

It is also the home to over eight million Atlantic puffins, more nesting puffins than anywhere else on earth. A local story tells that puffin chicks, taking their first flights at night, often become stranded in the village streets, where the local children rescue them and set them free the next day.

In January of 1973 the island received the nickname, ‘Pompeii of the North’ when a volcanic eruption and lava flow destroyed half the town. This caused a crisis when the town’s only harbour was nearly blocked by advancing lava. Nowadays it is a lively place with a vibrant culture and over four thousand residents. Archaeological excavations suggest that people lived on Heimaey as early as the 10th century.

Day 8 Qaqortoq, Greenland - Hvalsey, Greenland

Qaqortoq
Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 12:00

Qaqortoq is the largest city in Southern Greenland with 3,300 inhabitants. The town rises steeply above the natural small-boat harbour with its fish, shrimp and fur processing plants. It was founded in 1775 by the Dano-Norwegian trader Anders Olsen, working on behalf of the General Trading Company.

Qaqortoq is best known for its open-air art exhibition, the Stone & Man project, designed to transform the town into an outdoor gallery. It had the participation of 18 Nordic artists from Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Greenland. Initially 24 stone sculptures were created using the existing rock faces and boulders in the town. Now there are over 40 sculptures celebrating Greenlandic culture.

Other points of interest include Mindebronden, the oldest fountain in Greenland, the Qaqortoq Museum and The Saviours Lutheran Church.

18 kms northwest of town are the famous remains of the Viking church of Hvalsey. It represents the last written record of the Greenlandic Norse, who attended a wedding there in AD 1408. Hvalsey is the most prominent Norse site in Greenland.

Hvalsey
Arrive: 13:00 - Depart: 18:00

19 kms by Zodiac up the Hvalseyjarfjord from Qaqortoq, the largest community in South Greenland, lies the most prominent Norse archaeological site in Greenland. The so-called Eastern Settlement lasted from the 10th until the mid-15th century.

Your expedition team archaeologist can interpret for you the ruins of the great halls and church at Hvalsey that hint of a prospering medieval farmstead. The site evokes an era when the Norse were trading with the indigenous Thule people of the area for furs and ivory, which were a prized commodities in Europe. A wedding held in the church in 1408 comprises the last written record of the Norse adventure in Greenland. Within a few years, Hvalsey and the rest of other Norse communities of Greenland withered as immigrants returned to the more established communities in Iceland and Norway.

The site’s meadows of wildflowers sloping up from the fjord give a sense of the peaceful community that existed here in that long-ago summer.

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Qassiarsuk, Greenland

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 12:00

Norse farmers settled in this area in the 10th century, the earliest type of farming to the Arctic. It was from the Qassiarsuk farmstead that Leif Eriksson (Erik the Red's Son) set sail and discovered Vinland, reaching the North American continent at Newfoundland and Labrador. UNESCO has included Qassiarsuk and other nearby sites as part of a World Heritage Site.

Overnight: Seabourn's Seabourn Venture

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 10 Nanortalik - Tasermiut Fjord, Greenland

Nanortalik
Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 12:00

The immense scale of the peaks around this village dwarfs anything built there. Still, the tall white steeple of the church juts up with a spirit of endurance and perseverance that matches the character of those who make this remote outpost their home. It also echoes the shape of icebergs floating in the surrounding seas, shed from the immense ice fields that cover much of the island.

Tasermiut Fjord
Arrive: 13:30 - Depart: 18:30

Tasermiut Fjord stretches for more than 60 kilometres along the coast of southwestern Greenland. Known as the “Patagonia of the North,” this glacial inlet is revered for its breathtaking beauty, with jagged, sky-high peaks mirroring off the icy waters.

Rock climbers have long coveted it for some of the sport’s best “big walls” — the massive Ulamertorsuaq, often compared to Yosemite’s El Capitan; Nalumasortoq, noted for its distinctive, “open book” shape; and the Ketil pyramid — all of which reach more than 1,800 metres in height.

Tasermiut had terminated at a glacial front just a few decades ago; since then, climate change has caused noticeable retreat and created a “hanging” glacier that no longer connects to the fjord. Seabourn guests explore Tasermiut by Zodiac and, if conditions allow, can join the Kayak Team on an optional paddle along the pristine shoreline (charges apply).

Overnight: Seabourn's Seabourn Venture

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 11 Aappilattoq, Greenland

Aappilattoq
Arrive: 13:00 - Depart: 18:00

Tiny Aappilattoq is located in Prins Christian Sund at Greenland’s southern tip, in the municipality of Kujalleq. Its name means ‘red’ in Greenlandic. The sound is enfolded by steep mountains, rising from the water to sharp, shattered peaks.

The town’s setting is particularly picturesque, its brightly painted houses scattered across a small peninsula of humped granite domes, under a backdrop of a looming pyramid of stone. The little red town church nestles next to a white-picket-fenced graveyard. The sound itself is dotted with icebergs slowly melting into expressionist sculptures. It is a place where the infrequent visitors routinely fill their camera cards with unforgettable images of Greenland’s spectacular visual splendour.

Overnight: Seabourn's Seabourn Venture

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 12 Prins Christian Sund, Greenland

Arrive: 09:00 - Depart: 15:00

The transit of the Prins Christian Sund is one of the highlights of cruising in Greenland. The approximately 100km sound cuts between the mainland and an archipelago of islands from east to west, under the southern edge of the massive Greenland Ice Sheet, which covers 80 percent of the island.

The sound is narrow, sometimes as little as 450m across, with numerous glaciers reaching its shores, calving icebergs into the sound. Bordered by high, barren and sharply defined peaks tower on both sides, the only signs of humanity are at the Ikerassasuaq weather station, where the ship enters, and the small village of Appilattoq, housing approximately 100 people.

Animal life is more abundant, with minke, fin and blue whales seen frequently, as well as ringed and bearded seals that bask on the floating ice. It is a breathtaking display of nature's splendour in the severe, rugged world of rock, ice and sea.

Overnight: Seabourn's Seabourn Venture

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 13 Skjoldungen Fjord, Greenland

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 17:00

Imagine a narrow fjord bordered by rugged peaks, vertical rock walls and serpentine rivers of ice plunging into the sea. This is Skjoldungen Fjord, named by Wilhelm August Graah after the honorific title Skjoldungen which, according to Norse mythology, was given to successors of legendary King Skjold to the Danish throne.

During the summer, numerous tidewater glaciers calve, releasing large chunks of ice that plunge into the fjord. Above, huge crevasses and free-standing pillars of ice, known as seracs, are silhouetted against a blue Greenlandic sky.

Devoid of large trees, Skjoldungen Fjord is carpeted in colourful dwarf birch and willow forests that grow several metres high, as well as a variety of low-growing Arctic wildflowers.

This fjord was likely inhabited by Palaeo-Eskimo (Inuit) nomadic people as early as 4,000 years ago. Archaeological remains of later historical periods, such as Thule culture graves, have also been found, indicating that Inuit people have lived in the area continuously. Scattered within this stunning scenery are remains of more recent abandoned Inuit dwellings along the fjord’s western shores.

Overnight: Seabourn's Seabourn Venture

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 14 Tasiilaq, Greenland

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 12:00

In Greenland, nature is big and almost overwhelming. You'll be awed by towering mountains, huge distances, epic adventures, harsh weather and challenges that loom and beckon even in summer.

The people of the Saqqaq culture arrived here from the north, the first to reach this part of Greenland. The Viking Norse first became familiar with this area when they made it their first landfall on the voyage from Iceland's Snaefellsnes peninsula to Greenland. Today that location is known as Tasiilaq, and it is the largest town in Eastern Greenland with 2,000 inhabitants.

The island where Tasiilaq is located was formerly known as Angmagssalik in Greenlandic, meaning ‘the place with capelin.’ Walking through Tasiilaq is, in many ways, like walking through time. You will likely see many of the town’s over 1,000 sled-dogs, as well as wooden dog-sledges, skin-covered kayaks, fish air-drying on racks and maybe even the hides of seals and polar bears, just as in eras long past.

Overnight: Seabourn's Seabourn Venture

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 15 Cruising

Overnight: Seabourn's Seabourn Venture

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 16 Patreksfjordur, Iceland

Arrive: 06:00 - Depart: 17:00

The small village of Patreksfjordur serves as gateway to the Westfjords peninsula in northwestern Iceland and some of the country’s most spectacular attractions. Fishing is the main industry here, although tourism is quickly growing thanks to Patreksfjordur’s proximity to such natural wonders as Dynjandi waterfalls.

Dynjandi, which translates as “thunderous”, rivals Gullfoss in sheer spectacle, cascading more than 100 metres down a series of increasingly wider steps; the rocky footpath to the top passes seven smaller falls.

Latrabjarg, a rocky promontory that marks the westernmost point of Europe (not counting the Azores), is recognised as one of the best birdwatching spots on the planet. Latrabjarg’s four rugged, wind-battered cliffs, stretching for nearly 14 kilometres and reaching close to 450 metres in height, are home to more than one million birds, including massive colonies of colourful puffins and around 40 per cent of the world’s nesting razorbills.

The red sands of Raudasandur beach are a stark contrast to most of the country’s black volcanic beaches, while the wreck of Gardar BA 64, Iceland’s oldest steel ship, lies in rusting ruins along Patreksfjordur’s shore.

Overnight: Seabourn's Seabourn Venture

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 17 Flatey, Iceland - Grundarfjordur, Iceland

Flatey
Arrive: 07:00 – Depart: 11:00

The remote island of Flatey (“Flat Island”) is located in Breidafjordur Bay on the northwestern part of Iceland. It is only 2 km long and 1 km wide, with just one road through the quaint little old village.

Sheep and seabirds are the most numerous inhabitants, including large numbers of Atlantic puffins and Arctic terns. The island is a paradise for birdwatching with over 30 different species during the breeding season.

Grundarfjordur
Arrive: 13:30 – Depart: 19:00

The charming small fishing village of Grundarfjordur is located in the middle of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and thus provides easy access to Stykkisholmur, Snaefellsbaer and the Snaefellsnes National Park. Its best-known landmark is undoubtedly the peak of Mount Kirkjufell. Translated as ‘church mountain,’ Kirkjufell is the most easily recognisable peak, and one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland.

During summer months a Viking Village is built in the centre of town where Viking re-enactments occur quite regularly. During the A godri stund town festival in July, the town’s 900 residents decorate their houses in red, blue, yellow, and green, transforming the town into a spinning kaleidoscope of colour.

The town first began trade in 1786, and around 1800, French merchants came to Iceland and settled in Grundarfjordur, where they constructed a church and a hospital. The town has prospered through the fishing industry for a long time. The surrounding sea is rich with birdlife & marine life throughout the year.

In Scoresbysund everything is bigger. Dark basalt mountains rise to 2,000 metres, looming over the ice-filled water of the fjord below. Huge icebergs drift with the currents and pile up in crowds choked white, in huge quantities and volume that will take your breath away. If you are lucky a polar bear might appear, like a small speck in this vast, remote, and wild area.

Scoresby Sund, or Scoresby Sound was named in honor of the English explorer William Scoresby who mapped the area in 1822.

Day 9 Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 12:00

The small Greenlandic town of Ittoqqortoormiit sits at the entrance to Scoresbysund (Scoresby Sound), the longest fjord on Earth. Although founded in 1925, the original colonists to the area were Palaeo-Eskimo peoples 4,000 years ago.

Home to around 500 residents, Ittoqqortoormiit derives its name from Greenlandic meaning ‘Big-House Dwellers’. A walk through town, reveals a vibrant Greenlandic culture. Seal, muskox and even a polar bear skin can be seen drying on racks outside of private homes. Greenlandic sled dogs sit patiently on their leashes in front yards, awaiting winter, their wooden sledges propped against buildings. In the local food store seal and whale meat are among the regular traditional foodstuffs laid out beside common western items.

Ittoqqortoormiit has a post office where you can purchase Greenlandic stamps and mail your postcards, as well as a quaint church, its gabled interior painted in white and sky-blue. The entire community is a picturesque kaleidoscope of colour, each building painted in bright hues of red, blue, yellow and green.

Unlike the sheer cliffs and rugged terrain presented by much of the coastline, the shores inside the bay are smooth and the massive Greenland Ice Sheet comes right down to the shore in undulating slopes.

This profile persuaded Fritjof Nansen to select the bay as the starting point of his successful 1888 expedition to cross Greenland over the ice sheet. There are several large islands in the bay, including Uppernattivik Island in the middle. Watch for the spectacle of calving glaciers!

Day 12 Prins Christian Sund - Kangikitsok, Greenland

Prins Christian Sund
Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 13:00

The transit of the Prins Christian Sund is one of the highlights of cruising in Greenland. The approximately 100-kilometre sound cuts between the mainland and an archipelago of islands from east to west, under the southern edge of the massive Greenland Ice Sheet, which covers 80 per cent of the island.

The sound is narrow, sometimes as little as 450 metres across, and numerous glaciers reach the sea on its shores, calving icebergs into the sound. High, barren and sharply defined peaks tower on both sides. The only indications of humanity to be seen are the Ikerassasuaq weather station (using the Greenlandic name for the sound) where the ship enters, and the small village of Aappilattoq, housing approximately 100 people. Animal life is more abundant, with minke, fin and blue whales seen frequently, as well as ringed and bearded seals that haul out on the floating ice. It is a breathtaking display of natural splendour in the severe, rugged vernacular of rock, ice and sea that is unique to the Arctic realm.

Kangikitsok
Arrive: 16:00 - Depart: 20:00

As you explore Kangikitsoq, guided by the experienced Seabourn Venture team, you'll walk among a group of conical land formations with mysterious origins called molards.

Along the way, your expedition team will point out unique landmarks, ancient Inuit burial sites, and more, as you explore the lush vegetation, stunning views and its rich history.

Day 13 Qaqortoq - Hvalsey, Greenland

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 14:00

Qaqortoq is the largest city in Southern Greenland with 3,300 inhabitants. The town rises steeply above the natural small-boat harbour with its fish, shrimp and fur processing plants. It was founded in 1775 by the Dano-Norwegian trader Anders Olsen, working on behalf of the General Trading Company.

Qaqortoq is best known for its open-air art exhibition. The Stone & Man project, designed to transform the town into an outdoor gallery, had the participation of 18 Nordic artists from Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Greenland.

Eighteen kilometres northwest of town are the famous remains of the Viking church of Hvalsey. It represents the last written record of the Greenlandic Norse, who attended a wedding there in AD 1408. Hvalsey is the most prominent Norse site in Greenland.

Hvalsey
Arrive: 15:00 - Depart: 20:00

Nineteen kilometres by Zodiac up the Hvalseyjarfjord from Qaqortoq, the largest community in South Greenland, lies the most prominent Norse archaeological site in Greenland. The so-called Eastern Settlement lasted from the 10th until the mid-15th century. Your expedition team archaeologist can interpret for you the ruins of the great halls and church at Hvalsey that hint of a prospering medieval farmstead.

The site evokes an era when the Norse were trading with the indigenous Thule people of the area for furs and ivory, which were prized commodities in Europe. A wedding held in the church in AD 1408 comprises the last written record of the Norse adventure in Greenland. Within a few years, Hvalsey and the rest of other Norse communities of Greenland withered as immigrants returned to the more established communities in Iceland and Norway. The site’s meadows of wildflowers sloping up from the fjord give a sense of the peaceful community that existed here in that long-ago summer.

Day 14 Qassiarsuk, Greenland

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 12:00

Norse farmers settled in this area in the 10th century, the earliest type of farming to the Arctic. It was from the Qassiarsuk farmstead that Leif Eriksson (Erik the Red's son) set sail and discovered Vinland, reaching the North American continent at Newfoundland and Labrador. UNESCO has included Qassiarsuk and other nearby sites as part of a World Heritage Site.

Day 15 Nuuk, Greenland

Arrive: 12:00 - Depart: 23:00

Greenland’s capital Nuuk, is a city of vitality and Greenlandic culture. It’s here that old traditions and modern influences combine to create a diverse population. Nuuk is the home of the University of Greenland with its 650 students and the Greenland National Museum with is its extensive historical archives and cultural displays.

Also of interest are the Nuuk Art Museum and the Kayak Museum. The Art Museum holds a body of 300 paintings primarily featuring the work of traveling European artists, while the Kayak Museum houses a very impressive collection of sealskin kayaks and traditional hunting artefacts.

The modest wooden frame of the Nuuk Cathedral, built in 1849, is a recognizable landmark on Nuuk’s skyline. The site of Nuuk was occupied as far back as 2,200 BC by ancient pre-Inuit peoples from Canada. It was settled again in the 10th century by Viking explorers. The current city was founded in 1728 by Danish missionary Hans Egede and a statue of Egede stands adjacent to the cathedral.

Day 16 Evighedsfjorden, Greenland

Arrive: 12:00 - Depart: 18:00

Eternity Fjord, situated in the remote wilderness of Greenland, is a breathtaking natural wonder known for its awe-inspiring beauty and dramatic landscapes. Carved by ancient glaciers, the fjord is flanked by towering snow-capped peaks and sheer cliffs that plunge into crystal-clear Arctic waters, creating a majestic spectacle of contrasting colours and textures.

The serenity of the fjord is punctuated by the occasional crack and groan of the icebergs as they calve and drift slowly towards the sea. This pristine and untouched environment offers a glimpse into the raw, untamed beauty of the Arctic, captivating visitors with its sense of timeless grandeur and an overwhelming feeling of being in the presence of an unspoiled, primordial masterpiece of nature.

Day 17 Sisimiut, Greenland

Arrive : 07:00 - Depart: 15:00

Located 40 km north of the Arctic Circle, Sisimiut (Greenlandic for ‘place of fox dens’) is “rough, real and remote.” These three words cut to the core of Sisimiut’s reputation as an outdoor adventure-travel hub. It’s the second-largest city in Greenland with 5,600 inhabitants and was founded in 1756 under the leadership of the Danish missionary, Hans Egede.

The area has been inhabited for 4,500 years, first by the Inuit peoples of the Saqqaq culture, then the Dorset culture, and then the Thule people, whose descendants comprise the majority of the current population.

One of the most picturesque towns in Greenland, Sisimiut is set in a tranquil fjord perched on bare outcrops of rock. Mount Nasaasaaq, 784 metres tall, is the backdrop for the town, where colourful houses of bright red, yellow, green and blue stand out in stark contrast to a landscape of grey and white. The Sisimiut Museum hosts a traditional Greenlandic peat house and the remains of an 18th-century kayak.

Day 5 Grundarfjordur, Iceland

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 17:00

The charming small fishing village of Grundarfjordur is located in the middle of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and thus provides easy access to Stykkisholmur, Snaefellsbaer and the Snaefellsnes National Park. Its best-known landmark is undoubtedly the peak of Mount Kirkjufell (Icelandic for ‘church mountain’), one of the most recognised and photographed mountains in Iceland.

During summer months a Viking Village is built in the centre of town where Viking re-enactments occur regularly.

The surrounding sea is rich with birdlife and marine life throughout the year.

Day 6 Dynjandi - Patreksfjordur, Iceland

Dynjandi
Arrive: 06:00 - Depart: 10:00

Nestled in the Westfjords, a remote and rugged section of Iceland, Arnafjordur, a long fjord branches in many directions. One of the highlights of the fjord is the impressive Dynjandi Waterfall, which translates as “thunderous". From a distance, it resembles a bridal veil and rivals Gullfoss in sheer spectacle, cascading more than 100 metres down a series of increasingly wider steps; the rocky footpath to the top passes seven smaller falls.

Dynjandi and the grasses that grow along its base provide important habitat for various species of seabirds and ducks.

Patreksfjordur
Arrive: 13:00 - Depart: 21:00

The small village of Patreksfjordur serves as gateway to the Westfjords peninsula in northwestern Iceland and some of the country’s most spectacular attractions. Fishing is the main industry here, although tourism is quickly growing thanks to Patreksfjordur’s proximity to such natural wonders as Dynjandi waterfalls.

Latrabjarg, a rocky promontory that marks the westernmost point of Europe (not counting the Azores), is recognised as one of the best birdwatching spots on the planet. Latrabjarg’s four rugged, wind-battered cliffs — stretching for nearly 14 kilometres and reaching close to 450 metres in height — are home to more than one million birds, including massive colonies of colourful puffins and around 40 per cent of the world’s nesting razorbills.

The red sands of Raudasandur beach are a stark contrast to most of the country’s black volcanic beaches, while the wreck of Gardar BA 64, Iceland’s oldest steel ship, lies in rusting ruins along Patreksfjordur’s shore.

Day 8 Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 18:00

The small Greenlandic town of Ittoqqortoormiit sits at the entrance to Scoresby Sund, the longest fjord on Earth. Although founded in 1925, the original colonists to the area were Palaeo-Eskimo peoples 4,000 years ago.

Home to around 500 people, Ittoqqortoormiit derives its name from Greenlandic meaning ‘Big-House Dwellers’.

Ittoqqortoormiit has a post office where you can purchase Greenlandic stamps and mail your postcards as well as a quaint church, its gabled interior painted in white and sky-blue. The entire community, in fact, is a picturesque kaleidoscope of colour, each building painted in bright hues of red, blue, yellow and green.

Day 9 Scoresby Sund, Greenland

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 17:00

In Scoresbysund everything is bigger. Dark basalt mountains rise to 2,000 metres over the ice-filled water of the fjord below. Huge icebergs drift with the currents and pile up in crowds choked white, in huge quantities and volume that will take your breath away.

If you are lucky a polar bear might appear, like a small speck in this vast, remote, and wild area. Scoresbysund, or Scoresby Sound was named in honor of the English explorer William Scoresby who mapped the area in 1822.

Overnight: Seabourn's Seabourn Pursuit

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 10 Northeast Greenland National Park

Arrive: 13:00 - Depart: 17:00

Cruise into Northeast Greenland National Park where the landscape opens into wider fjords and long valleys, and ice and water continue to define the terrain. Glaciers descend from the interior ice sheet, their fractured faces meeting dark water where icebergs drift slowly toward the Greenland Sea.

The scale becomes more apparent with time. Mountains rise in layered ridgelines, their surfaces marked by centuries of glacial movement. In calmer conditions, the water reflects the surrounding cliffs and ice, creating a near-symmetry that shifts with wind and light. Wildlife appears intermittently but with clarity. Musk oxen, seals, and seabirds appear intermittently between the cliffs, sea, and sky.

There are no settlements or infrastructure, and little indication of human presence beyond the passage of expedition vessels. Movement through this region is defined by observation rather than destination, where each turn in the fjord reveals another stretch of terrain cemented by time and isolation.

Day 15 Siglufjordur, Iceland

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 16:00

Siglufjordur is the northernmost town on the Icelandic mainland, a small fishing village of some 1,200 people. Founded in 1918, it was once the capital of the North Atlantic herring fishing industry. The Sildarminjasafnid Herring Era Museum, one of Iceland's largest seafaring and industrial museums, houses three different areas where one can learn about both the traditional and the modern herring industry. A collection of many historic fishing vessels and artefacts is proudly displayed by the people of Siglufjordur, detailing how herring was salted, processed and collected.

The small harbour with its colourful fishing boats and the red-roofed steeple of the Lutheran church dominate the villagescape. The area boasts incredible natural beauty with high mountains that rim the fjord, freshwater lakes, the Holsa River, black sand beaches and a wealth of birdlife all around. The northernmost region of Iceland, it is renowned for some of the country's largest and most dramatic waterfalls.

Day 16 Flatey, Iceland

Sheep and seabirds are the most numerous inhabitants, including large numbers of Atlantic puffins and Arctic terns. The island is a paradise for birdwatching with over 30 different species during the breeding season.

Day 17 Heimaey, Westman Islands, Iceland

Exploring The Outer Islands of Heimaey
Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 11:00

Join your expedition team for a Zodiac cruise around the bird cliffs of Heimaey Island for an excellent chance to see the region's unique birdlife up close. Keep your eyes peeled for the clowns of the sea, the puffins. The journey will take you to a tranquil inner bay near the town and if weather permits, towards the cliffs.

Heimaey, Westman Islands
Arrive: 12:00 - Depart: 19:30

Heimaey Island is the largest in the Westman Islands located six kilometres off the south-west coast of Iceland. One of the most visually impressive islands in Iceland, it is ringed by tall, vertical sea cliffs, many hundreds of metres high.

Heimaey is also the home to over eight million Atlantic puffins, more nesting puffins than anywhere else on earth.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Greenland
In July and August, Greenland experiences its warmest and most visitor-friendly weather, especially along the coast. Average temperatures range from 5°C to 15°C, with southern areas like Narsarsuaq occasionally reaching up to 20°C on sunny days. Coastal towns such as Nuuk and Ilulissat typically see temperatures between 7°C and 12°C, while inland and northern areas remain cooler. These summer months offer long daylight hours and minimal snow at lower elevations, revealing dramatic landscapes of fjords, glaciers, and green valleys. Although rain and fog can occur, the overall weather is relatively mild, making July and August ideal for hiking, boating, and wildlife spotting.

Iceland
In July and August, Iceland enjoys its warmest and most stable weather of the year, making it a popular time for travel. Average daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 15°C, with warmer days occasionally reaching 20°C, especially in the south. The weather is generally mild and changeable, with a mix of sunshine, cloud, and occasional light rain. Long daylight hours—nearly 18 to 21 hours—allow plenty of time for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The landscape is lush and green, perfect for exploring waterfalls, glaciers, and volcanic terrain. While it's still wise to dress in layers, July and August are ideal for experiencing Iceland’s natural beauty.

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Dietary Requests:
Meal options and availability differ between airlines and routes therefore not all dietary requests can be accommodated. If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

CRUISE
Embarkation / Disembarkation:
• Begins approximately 2 hours after docking.
• Due to security reasons, all guests must be on board 2 hours before sailing.
• Itineraries are subject to change at any time without notice.
• Check your specific sailing for exact departure and arrival times. All times are local to the port.

Cruise Loyalty Discounts:
Please note: Travellers must contact the cruise line directly upon receiving their travel documents in order to request any membership benefits they may be entitled to.

Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.

Luggage:
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

OTHER
Mobility:
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Expect a moderate pace of touring with a focus on guided tours that may include full days with extended activity, guided city tours or nature walks. You will require a general level of fitness for unassisted navigation of stairs and inclines, longer distances with possible periods of standing when visiting sites, walking on sloping, uneven ground or elevations. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Many areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, where the unassisted use of personal walking sticks and other aids may be required. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.

Yellow Fever:
A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate upon arrival.
You must check with your doctor well before leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Wildlife Sighting:
TripADeal cannot guarantee animal sightings on tour. Wildlife are unpredictable and factors such as weather conditions, predatory fear and animal movements can impact sightings.

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Iceland & Greenland
A tourist visa is not required for Iceland or Greenland for stays up to 90 days if travelling on an Australian passport.

European Union Entry/Exit System (EES)
From October 12, 2025, a new European Entry System (EES) replaced the manual passport-stamping process for non-EU travellers. Upon arrival in the Schengen area, Australian and New Zealand passport holders will have their fingerprints recorded and a photograph taken. Their entry and exit dates will be electronically registered. No previous action is required, but please be aware of longer wait times at border entry. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of all the European countries (Schengen area) using the system.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)
As an extension of the EES implementation introduced in 2025, ETIAS travel authorisation is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries, including Australian and New Zealand citizens, that will be introduced in 2026. We advise you to monitor smartraveller.gov.au closer to your departure to ensure you are up to date on the requirements at the time of entry.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
