Day 1 Meet us in Vienna, Austria

Make your own way to Vienna, Austria to begin your holiday.

Overnight: Arcotel Wimberger or similar, Vienna

Day 2 Vienna -Walking City Tour - Begin 6-night 5-star Vienna, Austria to Nuremberg, Germany River Cruise

After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a half-day guided tour of the city (entrances not included). You will follow the Ringstrasse, the central area where the Opera, the historic Art Museum, Parliament, the City Hall, University and National Theatre are located. See the Prater neighbourhood with its panoramic Ferris wheel, and perhaps Vienna’s most famous attraction – Saint Stephen’s Cathedral.

In the afternoon, be transferred to the embarkation terminal to board your 6-night Rhine River Christmas cruise aboard the 5-star MS Amadeus Queen or Amadeus River.

Boarding will take place from 16:00 today.

You will have plenty of time to explore the festively decorated ship, followed by a welcome cocktail with the cruise management. Then, savour your first culinary delight on board at a stylish welcome dinner, during which the chef will put you in an appropriately celebratory mood for your upcoming winter trip.

Enjoy exploring a wintery Vienna today!

Take an optional morning city sightseeing tour in a comfortable bus that takes you past the most beautiful sights of the Austrian capital.

In the afternoon, take the opportunity to view the magnificent Schonbrunn Palace (optional activity), as well as to visit the traditional, romantic Christmas market in front of the palace. Here, the pervasive pre-Christmas atmosphere and the aromas of lebkuchen (gingerbread) and roasted almonds combine in an unforgettable, authentic Advent experience.

In the evening, we recommend that music lovers attend the atmospheric Sound of Vienna concert (optional activity), which will present a kaleidoscope of Viennese classical music.

Day 4 Melk - Emmerdorf, Austria

Arrive: 08:30 - Depart: 2:00

In the morning, your floating premium hotel reaches the UNESCO World Natural Heritage region of Wachau. Your ship docks in Melk/Emmersdorf, where you can join an optional excursion to Melk Abbey or to Durnstein. At the end of the excursion, enjoy a mug of warming gluhwein (mulled wine) on board.

The rest of the day is spent on board, where you will have a wonderful view of the passing winter landscapes as your cruise ship travels towards Passau.

Day 5 Passau, Germany

During breakfast, arrive in Passau, also known as the City of Three Rivers, situated at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers. In the morning, enjoy the romantic old town with its historic buildings during the course of an optional guided walk.

The afternoon is a perfect time to visit the traditional Passau Christmas market. Early this evening your ship will depart this lovely city and head towards Regensburg.

Day 6 Regensburg, Germany

A full day is spent in festively adorned, historic Regensburg. This magical destination where time seems to stand still, is best explored during a morning optional guided sightseeing walk.

After lunch, explore on your own or opt to join an excursion to the Christmas market in the Royal Thurn and Taxis Castle. Revel in the festive pre-Christmas atmosphere filled with the aroma of lebkuchen (gingerbread) and roasted almonds, and stalls filled with local handicrafts.

The captain invites you to join him at an elegant Gala Dinner onboard, while your ship continues its journey later this evening.

After lunch, step off the ship in the Bavarian town of Roth, where a city tour of Nuremberg will begin. The tour will take you to the most significant monuments and sights in picturesque Nuremberg. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the romantic Christmas market and taste the world-famous Nuremberg lebkuchen (gingerbread) before returning to your ship, which will be waiting for you in the Nuremberg harbour.

Your ship remains here overnight.

Alternatively, you can relax on board and upon arrival in Nuremberg make a visit to the beautiful Christmas Market and enjoy passing through the charming old quarters and decorated city centre.

Disembark: 09:00

After breakfast, disembark and be transferred to the capital city of Prague, covering approximately 300 kilometres. Upon arrival check in to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Perhaps experience the beautiful Christmas markets of Prague, showcasing unique products that are available at the markets are Christmas ornaments, crafts, holiday decorations and traditional Czech Christmas cookies. Have the opportunity to taste some traditional Czech foods that are made fresh right in front of you. Hot wine (svarene víno or svarak), grog, and warm honey liquor called medovina come in handy in the cold weather (not included). Czech Christmas carols will also add to the festive atmosphere. If you decide to stay out after dark, you will be able to see the markets lit up beautifully by a terrific assortment of Christmas lights.

Cruise
Gratuities (tips) are not included for the cruise staff's services throughout this tour's cruise component. TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide: 
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group. 

Tour Leader: 
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
The average daily temperature during late November and early December in this part of Europe sits around 5°C, inching towards the heart of winter. Be sure to wrap up warm to get ready for a true European Christmas Winter. You may even be lucky enough to witness light snowfall!

Rhine River:  
Average temperatures in Rhine Valley vary greatly. Considering humidity, temperatures feel cold for about half of the year and otherwise nice with a chance of rain or snow throughout most of the year. Weather is cold this time of year in Rhine Valley, the average high during this season is between 4°C and 8°C. On average, it rains or snows a fair amount: 6 to 7 times per month.

Meals:
For meals not included, the tour leader (when available) will offer assistance with reservations, suggestions and directions to local restaurants. It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements. 
Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.

Luggage:
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

A Relaxed level of fitness will be required. 
Expect a comfortable pace of touring with a focus on leisure time and gentle activity. This may include city tours, the ability to walk up and down small flights of stairs and gentle slopes. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Some areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, with personal walking sticks and other aids required should they be needed. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.
Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping: 
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts. 
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 45 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

Visas

Europe Entry/Exit System (EES)
From October 12, 2025, a new European Entry System (EES) replaces the current manual passport-stamping process for non-EU travelers. Upon arrival in the Schengen area, Australian and New Zealand passport holders will have their fingerprints recorded and a photograph taken. Their entry and exit dates will be electronically registered. No previous action is required, but please be aware of longer wait times at border entry. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of all the European countries (Schengen area) using the system.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)
As an extension of the EES implementation introduced from 2025, ETIAS travel authorisation is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries, including Australian and New Zealand citizens, that will be introduced in 2026. We advise you to monitor smartraveller.com.au closer to your departure to ensure you are up to date on the requirements at the time of entry.

• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Voluntary Changes
This includes booking changes requested by you, including but not limited to those changes requiring an airline ticket or a Purchase Confirmation reissue.
• Changes - $100 per booking and any additional charges applied by the airline/cruise company/accommodation/other travel providers.

• If the incorrect name has been provided, charges of $100 per booking and any additional charges applied by the airline/cruise company/accommodation/other travel providers.

Supplier Fees
In the event the tour package you have purchased is unable to proceed, and/or a Travel Supplier is unable to fulfil the tour due to external circumstances (Limitation of Liability e.g. a Force Majeure event), there may be a fee or amount of money that is withheld by our Suppliers and is unrecoverable. This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. If refunds are not available from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. In the event we are unable to obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee.
