On arrival at the airport, you’ll be greeted by a representative and transferred to the hotel. If it is too early for check-in, luggage can be stored at the hotel. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Located on the lush northeast coast of Reunion, Sainte-Marie is often Reunion Island’s first impression. With its mix of Creole heritage, oceanfront scenery and access to dramatic volcanic landscapes, it offers an authentic slice of island life blending colourful Creole houses, small cafes with everyday island life. The coastline here is shaped by lava rock cliffs and crashing Indian Ocean swells, with panoramic views stretching toward the island’s mountainous interior.

Overnight: Hotel Exsel Creolia or similar, Sainte-Marie

Meals included: Dinner

Day 3 Sainte-Marie – Salazie

Today, be met by your local guide before setting off towards Saint-Andre.

Discover the orchid that has placed Reunion Island on the world stage, the vanilla orchid, celebrated not only for its intoxicating fragrance, but for its distinctive character. Visit the family-owned Roulof Vanilla Plantation, where generations have perfected their craft, to gain an insight into the intricate and time-honoured process of vanilla cultivation. Perhaps enjoy lunch in a traditional farmhouse for an authentic taste of local cuisine (not included).

This afternoon, continue to the spectacular Cirque de Salazie, a verdant mountain amphitheatre scattered with charming villages and dramatic waterfalls lining the Riviere du Mat. Along the way, admire natural wonders including the impressive Cascade Blanche, the elegant Voile de la Mariee, and the aptly named “Pisse en l’Air,” tumbling spectacularly onto the road below.

Continue to Selazie, and check-in to your hotel for an overnight stay. Enjoy dinner immersed in the tranquil beauty of Reunion Island’s highlands.

Day 4 Salazie

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before setting out to discover the enchanting village of Hell-Bourg. The village is officially listed among France’s most beautiful villages and is admired for its elegant Creole architecture. Step inside the beautifully preserved Maison Folio, a traditional home offering a glimpse into 19th-century colonial life, complete with lush gardens that showcase the island’s botanical heritage.

Enjoy leisure time to stroll through the village’s picturesque streets at your own pace. You may wish to walk to the nearby former thermal baths, once a celebrated attraction that contributed to the renown of the Cirque de Salazie.

Overnight: Sarana Hotel & Spa or similar, Salazie

Meals included: Breakfast; Dinner

Day 5 Salazie – Saint-Philippe – Saint-Pierre

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before departing to discover the untamed beauty of Reunion Island’s wild south - a region rich in authentic Creole culture and tradition.

En route, stop at Piton Sainte-Rose to see the remarkable Notre-Dame des Laves church, famously spared by advancing lava during past eruptions. Travel onward through the dramatic landscapes of Grand Brule, a vast, uninhabited expanse shaped by volcanic forces. This striking terrain leads to the lava tunnels at the foot of Piton de la Fournaise, where fire and ocean have met in spectacular fashion over the years. Amid sulphur mist, smoke and steam, each eruption has extended the island’s coastline, in some cases by nearly thirty hectares.

Pause at the notable 2007 lava flow to witness this powerful natural phenomenon up close. Why not savour a traditional Creole lunch at Cap Mechant (lunch not included) before continuing along the scenic coastal road via Manapany and Grand Anse, where rugged cliffs and crashing waves create some of the island’s most dramatic vistas.

Arrive in Saint-Pierre, the lively ‘Capital of the South,’ where multicultural influences blend seamlessly with the charm of a historic fishing town.

Overnight: Villa Delisle or similar, Saint-Pierre

Meals included: Breakfast; Dinner

Day 6 Saint-Pierre

Begin your day with an early breakfast at the hotel before travelling along the forest road toward the spectacular volcanic landscapes of Piton de la Fournaise, part of the UNESCO-listed World Heritage site.

Pause at Nez de Bœuf for sweeping views over the dramatic Riviere des Remparts valley, a truly breathtaking panorama. Continue across the Plaine des Sables, an extraordinary lunar-like plateau of ochre and volcanic rock, before reaching Pas de Bellecombe at 2,300 metres. From this exceptional lookout, take in the vast Enclos Fouque caldera, the towering silhouette of Piton de la Fournaise, and a landscape sculpted by lava flows and craters. You’ll also glimpse the volcano’s two main peaks, Bory (2,632 m) and Dolomieu (2,525 m). Enjoy leisure time to soak up the raw beauty and scale of this unforgettable setting.

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in island tradition with a hands-on Creole rum workshop set within a lush garden. Discover the art of crafting "rhum arrange" and blend your own personalised bottle to take home, a spirited reminder of your time in Reunion Island.

Later, return to your hotel for dinner and a relaxing overnight stay.

Overnight: Villa Delisle or similar, Saint-Pierre

Meals included: Breakfast; Dinner

Day 7 Saint-Pierre – Cilaos – Ilet a Cordes – Saline-Les- Bains

Today, set out along Reunion Island’s legendary 400-bend road, the only access route into the spectacular Cirque de Cilaos.

This winding mountain drive reveals breathtaking scenery at every turn, with views of some of the island’s highest and most dramatic peaks, including Grand Benare, Piton des Neiges, Gros Morne, Col du Taïbit, the striking Dimitile ridge and the Trois Salazes, three towering rock formations standing between the Cirque de Mafate and Cirque de Cilaos.

Renowned for its thermal springs, boutique vineyards, intricate embroidery and prized lentils, Cilaos is a cirque rich in heritage and tradition. Wander through the charming town centre and visit the peaceful Mare a Joncs, located just moments from the heart of the village. Continue to Ilet a Cordes, often described as “the end of the world.” The narrow mountain road linking Cilaos to this secluded hamlet offers sweeping panoramic views over the cirque.

On arrival, enjoy a local snack before meeting a true “child of the village,” who will guide you through the islet’s history and traditions, including its vineyards and the cultivation of its famous lentils, affectionately known as the island’s “black gold.” You’ll also explore his garden, abundant with fruits, vegetables and endemic plants.

This afternoon, depart the Cirque de Cilaos and travel toward the west coast, following either the scenic seaside road or the Tamarind Highway, the main artery linking the south and west, both offering beautiful coastal vistas along the way.

Overnight: Ness By D-Ocean Hotel or similar, Saline-les-Bains

Meals included: Breakfast; Dinner

Day 8 Saline-les-Bains – Maido – Le Port - Saline-les-Bains

Start your day with breakfast at the hotel before departing around 07:00.

Journey through a captivating mix of landscapes, dry plains, sugar cane fields, rolling grasslands, and forests of cryptomeria and tamarind trees, as you ascend from the west coast to Piton Maido at 2,200 metres.

From this extraordinary vantage point, marvel at the breathtaking panorama of the Cirque de Mafate, a remote valley accessible only on foot and famously served by the island’s postman. Around 600 residents live across the cirque’s scattered “islets,” surrounded by untouched nature and framed by Reunion Island’s highest peaks: Piton des Neiges, Gros Morne and Grand Benare.

Visit a traditional Creole house for a local snack while soaking in sweeping views over the west coast, followed by a hands-on Creole cooking class. Enjoy leisure time to enjoy lunch before heading to Le Port to embark on a magical sunset cruise. Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Expect a moderate pace of touring with a focus on guided tours that may include full days with extended activity, guided city tours or nature walks. You will require a general level of fitness for unassisted navigation of stairs and inclines, longer distances with possible periods of standing when visiting sites, walking on sloping, uneven ground or elevations. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Many areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, where the unassisted use of personal walking sticks and other aids may be required. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.
Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Yellow Fever:
A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate upon arrival.
You must check with your doctor well before leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Reunion Island
European Union Entry/Exit System (EES)
From October 12, 2025, a new European Entry System (EES) replaces the current manual passport-stamping process for non-EU travelers. Upon arrival in the Schengen area, Australian and New Zealand passport holders will have their fingerprints recorded and a photograph taken. Their entry and exit dates will be electronically registered. No previous action is required, but please be aware of longer wait times at border entry. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of all the European countries (Schengen area) using the system.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)
As an extension of the EES implementation introduced from 2025, ETIAS travel authorisation is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries, including Australian and New Zealand citizens, that will be introduced in 2026. We advise you to monitor smartraveller.gov.au closer to your departure to ensure you are up to date on the requirements at the time of entry.

Mauritius
A tourist visa is not required when travelling to Mauritius on an Australian or New Zealand passport. The Mauritian government provides visas on arrival free of charge to Australian and New Zealand passport holders. Visa and other entry and exit conditions (such as currency, customs and quarantine regulations) can change at short notice. Contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Mauritius prior to departure for the most up-to-date information.

Immigration officials at the port of entry require all visitors to Mauritius to provide accommodation details. Failure to do so may result in denial of entry to Mauritius. If you are arriving in Mauritius from a country known to have malaria, you will receive a follow-up visit from the Mauritian Health Department and will be required to undertake a blood test to check for the malaria-causing parasite. If you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is endemic, evidence of a yellow fever vaccination is required.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
