7 Day North Island Discovery

  • Explore wild & dramatic volcanic landscapes
  • Visit Tongariro, Whirinaki & Lake Aniwhenua
Includes luxury coach, tour guide & meals

There’s more to New Zealand’s North Island than beaches and wineries - it has an adventurous side too. Volcanoes in Tonagiro National Park, prehistoric rainforest at Whirinaki, the wild and untamed power of Huka Falls and beyond… this amazing seven day tour is your ticket to discover it all.

Begin with a free night in central Auckland and then journey south into the spectacular Rotorua district. Enjoy a cruise on Lake Tarawera, including a visit to its unusual hot water beach (which is heated by an underground geothermal spring and hot enough to cook a hangi), followed by a short hike through scenic bushland and second cruise on nearby Lake Ōkataina. View sacred Maori rock carvings and experience local culture at Lake Āniwhenua, plus enjoy a tour through the rainforest of Whirinaki, learning of its wildlife and legends. Then, the volcanic wonders of Tongariro National Park await. Admire the rugged landscape of Mt Ruapehu with a ride up the SkyWaka Gondola, see powerful waterfalls and bubbling mud, and so much more. A 4WD tour of Blue Duck Station, and a stop at the ‘Top of the World’ for 360-degree views of the region, will be a highlight.

Sound like your kind of adventure? This amazing package includes six nights accommodation, 13 meals, luxury coach transport, and an experienced tour guide to help you go beyond the scenery.

ITINERARY

Haere Mai and Welcome to Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). Known as ‘the City of Sails’, it’s the largest in New Zealand and home to over 2 million people. The magic of Auckland is in its diversity, from the culture to the environment. There are two harbours, one on the east coast and the other just 8kms away on the west coast, and over 44 volcanoes in the area. Take the afternoon or early evening to explore after you make your own way to the Quadrant Hotel in central Auckland.

Overnight: Quadrant Hotel
Meals included: None

This morning you will be heading for the Rotorua region to visit two unique lakes: Lake Tarawera and Lake Ōkataina. Cruise out on the pristine waters in the shadow of Mount Tarawera, once home to the renowned pink and white terraces before a violent eruption destroyed them in 1886. Visit Hot Water Beach, only accessible by boat or foot, before cruising across the lake where you will hike the short track through native bush to Lake Ōkataina. Here another boat will be waiting for you to embark on a scenic cruise around the secluded lake. Enjoy a picnic lunch on board and learn more about the area's history before arriving at the lodge. Settle in before joining the group in the dining room for a wild food extravaganza, an evening meal entirely sourced from local produce.

Overnight: Lakes Lodge Ōkataina
Meals included: Breakfast;Lunch;Dinner

This morning is yours to enjoy breakfast and relax before we venture off the beaten track to the shores of Lake Āniwhenua in Murupara. Kohutapu Lodge is owned by a local Māori family who are passionate, not only about showcasing their Māori tribal heritage but also about making a difference in the local area. Murupara is an impoverished community that has been transformed for the better through tourism and commercial development. Through community-driven initiatives and a clear vision to provide more opportunities for the local youth, Kohutapu Lodge has paved the way for change in the area.

Begin the experience with a guided tour of the sacred Māori rock carvings before arriving at the Lodge to witness the preparation of a ground cooked hāngi and taste it for yourself! After lunch, you will depart for the lush, green Whirinaki rainforest for a guided tour along the Rongoa trail. Spot native endangered birds and ancient medicinal plants, and learn more about the history of the forest, including the myths and legends, before enjoying a hot kawakawa tea in the forest and a final karakia. This evening, return to Lake Ōkataina where you’ll have the option to grab dinner (if you still have room after the hāngi feast, that is!).

Overnight: Lakes Lodge Ōkataina
Meals included: Breakfast;Lunch;Dinner

Today is all about the pacific ring of fire. See bubbling mud, amazing waterfalls, volcanic lakes, and finish with New Zealand’s highest cafe at 2000 metres above sea level. First stop is Taupo with stops at the Wairakei Steam Field Lookout and the spectacular Huka Falls. Here more than 22,000 litres of water per second thunders into the Waikato river - it’s a must-see!

Stop for lunch in Taupo before heading to Tongariro National Park, where we’ll visit Mt Ruapehu for a ride up the fabulous SkyWaka Gondola. Witness incredible views of neighbouring volcanoes as you travel over waterfalls and ancient lava flows - a truly unforgettable experience. Finally, arrive at The Park Hotel where you can get settled in and then join the group for dinner.

Overnight: The Park Hotel
Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner

Today head to Blue Duck Station - a 7,200-acre high country farm on the banks of the Whanganui River. Jump on a 4WD farm tour to learn more about the conservation work taking place to preserve the station’s namesake, the Whio Blue Duck, and the unbelievable local history. Deep in the heart of the station, you’ll discover the Kaiwhakauka waterfall where you may even be able to spot a rare blue duck in the flesh. The grand finale is the journey up to the ‘Top of the World’, with 360-degree views that will take your breath away. From here you can see the three peaks of Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Taranaki and endless miles of verdant native bush. Enjoy a delicious lunch before heading back to Tongariro National Park for the evening.

Overnight: The Park Hotel
Meals included: Breakfast;Lunch;Dinner

Today journey through Tongariro National Park, with its three spectacular volcanic mountains – Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu. It’s a place of extremes and ancient lava flows. You'll cruise straight through Ohakune and off the central plateau to Wellington, the sparkling capital city, where modern business style blends with a cultured, bohemian, spirit. With a population of fewer than 200,000 people, there is no capital city on earth that marries relaxed and refined better than Wellington. The afternoon is free but it is highly recommended to visit the national museum Te Papa (entrance fee is included).

Overnight: Distinction Wellington or similar
Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner

All good things must come to an end. Enjoy breakfast at leisure before checking out of your hotel and make your own onward travel or continue your stay in Wellington.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides in each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however, they are not required to have specific knowledge on art, architecture, or history. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when particularly required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Average daytime temperatures during spring range between 19 degrees Celsius (°C) in the north to 16°C in the south. Expect a mixture of weather – crisp, sunny days can briskly change to cooler temperatures with spring showers. Spring in New Zealand spans September, October and November.

Passport Validity
Customers are required to provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 45 days prior to the departure date. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of the booking. In this instance, customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred.
