Day 11 Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, USA

Tendered: 08:00 - 17:00

Both culturally and geographically, Hawaii's Big Island divides into exact halves. The east is jungly, dark and prone to lava flows. The other side, the Kona side, grows all the coffee, and everyone wakes up really, really early.

Much of this drier region almost resembles a desert. But the shapes of the hills and the way rain snags on ridges means Kona holds hundreds of microclimates. That's how the coffee growers have flourished: Variations of only a few feet in altitude can result in very different brews. Some farms cover barely an acre; others sprawl enough to encompass two or three varieties. Either way, the beans are cultivated—from bush to cup—by hand.

Thankfully, plenty of places exist to play and burn off a little caffeine around Kona. History lies thick on the ground, from the ancient heiaus (temples) to the sacred buildings of Pu’uhonua O Honaunau ('The Place of Refuge') to the bay where Captain Cook breathed his last. Whales love the Kona side, spinner dolphins live up to their names, and giant mantas slowly barrel roll up from the depths.

Please note this port is accessed by tender boats. Boarding and disembarking tender boats may involve steps and uneven surfaces. While cruise lines strive to provide ease of access, accessibility options can vary at different tender ports. Passengers with mobility concerns are encouraged to inquire about specific arrangements and consider their individual needs when participating in tendering activities.

Day 14 Cruising - Cross International Date Line

Travellers flying or cruising across the Pacific Ocean get to experience the only-one-place-in-the-world feeling of adding or losing a day within the span of a second. The International Date Line is the longitudinal boundary between where one day starts (to the west) and another day ends (to the east). It runs roughly along the 180th meridian of longitude in the middle of the ocean - with some exceptions in the southern Pacific, where sovereign islands opted for one side over the other for commercial reasons.

Please note: As you travel west, your clocks will be wound forward 24 hours and you’ll effectively jump forward a calendar day as you cruise towards Samoa.

Day 17 Apia, Upolu, Samoa

Docked: 07:00 - 16:00

The remote Polynesian nation of Samoa, surrounded by dragonfly-bright seas, boasts a dramatic volcanic landscape with vibrant green jungles.

The country has two major landmasses: Upolu, the most populous of the Samoan islands, and Savai'i, the third-largest Polynesian island. Samoa's capital, Apia, sits midway along Upolu's north coast. This sprawling metropolitan area features a waterfront promenade and Beach Road, an avenue curving along the harbour where the Royal Samoa Police Band marches and hoists the national flag at Government House on weekday mornings. Check out their sharp ensembles, which feature navy lavalava (kilts) and robin's-egg-blue dress shirts.

Adventurers will want to make a splash at Palolo Deep National Marine Reserve near Apia harbour, while bookworms may wish to make a beeline to the home and grave of Robert Louis Stevenson (approximately 5 kilometres from Apia harbour). But perhaps the best way to experience Fa'a Samoa (‘The Samoan Way’) is by visiting the small villages scattered throughout the two islands. Here, you'll see locals still living in traditional fales - round thatched homes with no walls, all the better to enjoy the ocean breeze - and cooking on umus, 'ovens' of hot stones placed in shallow holes in the ground.

Day 19 Lautoka, Viti Levu, Fiji Islands

Docked: 10:00 - 19:00

Perched on the west coast, Lautoka, is the second largest city among Fiji's 332 islands and the second gateway, after the capital city Suva, to Fiji's experience of tropical paradise. Visitor will enjoy the year round warm temperatures in Lautoka on the island of Viti Levu. ‘Spear hit’ is the literal translation of the name Lautoka from the native Fijian language, giving an insight into the history and culture of this town. During a duel between two chiefs, one was hit in the chest by a spear and supposedly cried out “Lau-toka” as he died. Tribal traditions are still important in Fijian culture, with life centred around the local villages.

The lagoon that surrounds the island like a turquoise-encrusted ring is the perfect place for snorkelling, paddle boarding or simply idling in the warm waters, watching marine life dart in colourful schools beneath the surface.

Overnight: Holland America’s ‘Westerdam’

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 20 Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji Islands

Docked: 08:00 - 17:00

It may be Fiji’s capital with about 90,000 inhabitants, but Suva’s laid-back atmosphere, spectacular scenery and village-style hospitality is something of an antidote to the typical perception of city life.

What’s more, it may be on Fiji’s famed coast, but it’s not a beach resort. Suva is lined by mangroves, giving it a lush backdrop. The closest beach is 40 kilometres away, but there’s plenty to enjoy here.

Wandering around Suva’s streets reveals an intriguing blend of colonial and modern architecture, painting a picture of the city’s history. Government House was once the home of Fiji’s colonial governors, but it is now the Presidential Palace.

Day 23 Easo, Lifou, New Caledonia

Tendered: 08:00 - 18:00

Easo is the capital of Lifou, the largest and most populated of the Loyalty Islands. Home to around 10,000 Kanak people, it’s a simple, relatively undeveloped and largely unspoiled place, famed for two things: a sandy palm-fringed beach that fans out on either side of the main dock, and a very friendly atmosphere. Cruise ships are often welcomed to this island paradise with traditional tribal dances as well as a colourful local market that pops up to sell food, drinks and crafts.

The island itself offers a diverse landscape that ranges from the steep cliffs of the northern coast to the pristine white-sand beaches and stunning turquoise waters along the southern coast. The island’s many walking paths and trails take in pretty churches - including the famous missionary chapel, the Chapelle Notre Dame de Lourdes - and pass scenic observation points, not to mention a wide variety of wildflowers and plants. Visitors can also tour vanilla plantations to learn about this venerable spice and its production, or make day trips to the nearby island of Tiga.

Overnight: Holland America’s ‘Westerdam’

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 24 Noumea, New Caledonia

Docked: 08:00 - 17:00

Nouméa is a French city with Polynesian accents, cooled by ocean breezes and set among tropical flowers the size of dinner plates. With one of the healthiest reef systems left on earth, the island’s lagoons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hold more than 9,000 species of fish and marine life. The Kanaks, the native people to whom the French first gave cooking lessons, already lived lives rich with fish, taro and coconuts fresh from the tree. And, although the two cultures didn’t always get along, they agreed on one thing: Stick with the prettiest real estate you can find.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
