Itinerary

Day 1 Australia (or New Zealand) - Keflavik, Iceland

Today depart for Keflavik, Iceland.

Please note: Flight times will be indicated on your final documentation, which you will receive 4-6 weeks prior to departure.

Meals included: In-Flight

Day 2 Welcome to Keflavik, Iceland!

Upon arrival, be met and escorted to the hotel.

Welcome to the land of ice and fire! In Icelandic, Reykjanes translates loosely to “the smoking peninsula” — a fitting name for what you'll find here. The “smoke” isn’t from any human activity but rather the Earth’s own geothermal forces at work. Across the peninsula, you’ll discover rugged lava fields, shield volcanoes, black-sand plains and other unique geothermal landscapes. This diversity has earned Reykjanes UNESCO recognition as a site of global geological importance. Enjoy the remainder of your day at leisure.

Optional Activity: The Blue Lagoon
Enjoy a soak in the famous Blue Lagoon (transfers, entrance and towel included). Experience the radiant powers of geothermal seawater in an otherworldly wonder in the heart of a volcanic landscape. See Important Information for pricing.

Please note: The hotel is walking distance from the airport. The Tour Leader will meet you at the airport to escort you to the hotel reception.

Overnight: Aurora Star Hotel or similar, Keflavik

Meals included: None

Day 3 Keflavik, Iceland - Ilulissat, Greenland - Whale Safari

After breakfast continue your journey to Greenland the country made out of Ice. It is the world's largest island, and lies between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans.

Walk to the airport to board your flight to Greenland (approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes flight). Ilulissat is home to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord. Upon arrival, be transferred to your hotel.

In the afternoon, enjoy a whale safari cruise. Sail to the giant icebergs in the mouth of the fjord, keeping an eye out for Humpback whales, and maybe even Mink and Fin whales. Some of them come to the Arctic from the warm but nutrient-poor waters of the Caribbean to restore their fat reserves. Ilulissat is a perfect place to seek them out – especially with the backdrop of the Ilulissat Icefjord.

Overnight: Best Western Plus Hotel or similar, Ilulissat

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Ilulissat - Eqi Glacier Cruise, Greenland

This morning, continue your adventure with an Eqi Glacier boat trip. Witness a calving glacier in Greenland, with the potential to see massive ice chunks break off and fall into the sea.

Leaving Ilulissat, sail north along the coastline, passing the small settlement of Oqaatsut/Rodebay, the huge fjord system of Pakitsoq, and through the Ataa Straight lined with tall mountains.

During this beautiful journey we may be lucky to see whales and seals, important part of the Greenlandic oceanic wildlife. The Eqi Glacier is about 5 kilometre-wide and known as “The Calving Glacier”. Get as close as possible before turning off the engines and sitting back to watch. Usually, you don’t have to wait long before you start to see chunks of the glacier face break off and fall into the fjord. Occasionally, a larger chunk will fall, splash! A real highlight!

In the afternoon, return to Ilulissat and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Ilulissat is rich in Inuit history, a favourite feeding ground for migrating whales, a paradise for outdoor adventurers both on land and at sea, and a modern and vibrant city with some of the best gastronomy in the country.

Overnight: Best Western Plus Hotel or similar, Ilulissat

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Ilulissat - Disko Bay Cruise

Today, enjoy the morning at leisure in Ilulissat. You may like to hike the trails around the icefjord, whale watching and exploring local attractions like the Ilulissat Icefjord Centre, the Ilulissat Art Museum and the Ilulissat Museum (entry not included).

In the evening, board a cruise of the popular Disko Bay. World-famous for its icebergs, the setting sun or midnight sun, can create beautiful light reflections on the ice floes. Admire Disko Bay's stunning coastline, bays, fiords and marine wildlife in all its glory.

Overnight: Best Western Plus Hotel or similar, Ilulissat

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Ilulissat, Greenland - Reykjavik, Iceland

Today, be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Keflavik. Upon arrival, be met and transferred to your centrally-located hotel in Reykjavik. Enjoy the rest of your day at leisure in Iceland’s capital city.

Overnight: Center Hotels Plaza or similar, Reykjavík

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Reykjavik - Golden Circle - South Coast, Iceland

Today, you'll travel the Golden Circle route, home to three of Iceland's best-known attractions: Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall), one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe with thousands of tons of icy water thundering majestically into a deep canyon; The Geysir Area, with its hot springs, fumaroles and geysers; and Thingvellir, a remarkable geological wonder and the site of the world’s oldest democratic parliament, founded in 930. The beautiful canyon running through the park is actually a fault line between two of the earth’s tectonic plates.

Take in views of the Hvalfjorour Fjord, before heading inland to UNESCO World Heritage site, Thingvellir National Park. See plumes of steam rising from the Geysir geothermal fields as you arrive, with a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools to explore. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur, 'the Churn', a powerful 20-meter spout which erupts at 5 to 10 minute intervals.

Enjoy lunch (included) at Fridheimar, a unique, greenhouse-themed restaurant that grows tomatoes, basil and green vegetables all year round.

Continue to the accommodation in south Iceland. Tonight, after a day traveling approximately 220 kilometres, you can relax and enjoy the long evening light from a comfortable hot tub in the hotel’s garden, taking in the peace and tranquility of rural Iceland.

Overnight: Stracta Hotel or similar, Hella

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch

Day 8 Skaftafell National Park & Glacier - Glacial Lagoon and Diamond Beach

Today is all about glaciers, ice and icebergs, taking them all in over an approximately 200 kilometre travel day.

Make a quick stop at the famous black sand beach, Reynisfjara, before reaching the small town Kirkjubaejarklaustur, the former site of a 12th-century Catholic convent.

You will see Fjadrargljufur canyon, created over a long time by progressive glacial erosion. Head onwards to Skaftafell National Park, one of Iceland's most naturally beautiful areas.

Continue to the stunning Jokulsarlon Glacier, where you'll sail the glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs - you might even spot seals swimming in its arctic waters.

In the afternoon on the way to the hotel, you will stop to stroll the black sands of Diamond Beach, where shimmering shards of ice wash up on the black sands, creating a glistening view - before returning to your hotel to enjoy an included dinner.

Overnight: Hotel Skaftafell or similar, Freysnes

Meals included: Breakfast; Dinner

Day 9 South Coast - Skogafoss - Reykjavik

Today is the last day to explore Iceland's south coast.

Travel to the village of Vik for an insta-moment, capturing memorable shots of the black lava beach with its pounding waves and cliffs full of bird life.

Continue to the awe-inspiring waterfalls of Skogafoss, coming directly from two glaciers and further west, reach the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss Waterfall which plunges dramatically from the mountain above. Visit the Kerid crate, a volcanic crater lake located in the Grímsnes area, one of Iceland's most visually stunning geological wonders.

Arrive back in Reykjavík for one last night after travelling approximately 280 kilometres today.

Overnight: Center Hotels Plaza or similar, Reykjavík

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES

The average temperature during the summer in Iceland is around 10°C but can reach as high as 20-25°C and as low as 6-9°C.

Weather
We always suggest referring to an online source for the most up-to-date weather information for your destination/s.

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Dietary Requests:
Meal options and availability differ between airlines and routes therefore not all dietary requests can be accommodated. If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

COACH TOUR
Meals:
For meals not included, the tour leader (when available) will offer assistance with reservations, suggestions and directions to local restaurants. It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements.

Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.

Luggage:
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

OTHER
Mobility:
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

A moderate level of fitness will be required.
Expect a moderate pace of touring with a focus on guided tours that may include full days with extended activity, guided city tours or nature walks. You will require a general level of fitness for unassisted navigation of stairs and inclines, longer distances with possible periods of standing when visiting sites, walking on sloping, uneven ground or elevations. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Many areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, where the unassisted use of personal walking sticks and other aids may be required.
Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.

Visas

Europe Entry/Exit System (EES)
From October 12, 2025, a new European Entry System (EES) replaces the current manual passport-stamping process for non-EU travelers. Upon arrival in the Schengen area, Australian and New Zealand passport holders will have their fingerprints recorded and a photograph taken. Their entry and exit dates will be electronically registered. No previous action is required, but please be aware of longer wait times at border entry. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of all the European countries (Schengen area) using the system.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)
As an extension of the EES implementation introduced from 2025, ETIAS travel authorisation is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries, including Australian and New Zealand citizens, that will be introduced in 2026. We advise you to monitor smartraveller.com.au closer to your departure to ensure you are up to date on the requirements at the time of entry.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
