Day 4 Tokyo - Kusatsu Onsen - Nagano

Today depart Tokyo, and travel into the heart of the Japanese Alps. Along the way, enjoy a stop at the hot spring town of Kusatsu Onsen.

Kusatsu Onsen, nestled high in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, is one of Japan's most celebrated hot spring resorts, renowned for the sheer volume and quality of its naturally acidic, sulfurous waters. For centuries, it has drawn visitors seeking its therapeutic benefits, with locals famously claiming its waters can cure all ailments except lovesickness.

At the heart of the town lies the Yubatake, a captivating "hot water field" where steaming, milky blue water cascades down a series of wooden troughs. The iconic troughs not only serve to cool the scaldingly hot spring water but also create a mesmerising spectacle. The distinct sulfuric aroma that permeates the air is an ever-present reminder of the powerful geothermal activity beneath.

Beyond the baths, visitors can explore Sainokawara Park, a picturesque area with steaming hot spring streams scattered amongst the walking trails.

After Kusatsu Onsen, travel onwards to Nagano, the capital and largest city of Nagano Prefecture, located in the Nagano Basin where you will check into your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Todays driving distance is approximately 250 kilometres.

Please note: Driving conditions in Japan during the winter months can be significantly impacted by snowfall and ice, particularly in mountainous regions. While we strive to maintain our scheduled tour itineraries, the safety of our passengers is our utmost priority. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park

Today’s highlight is Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park.

Established in 1964, Nagano's world-famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is home to the world famous group of monkeys known to bathe in hot springs.

The trail to the park is 1.6 kilometres in both directions. It is unsealed but well-maintained and other than a short staircase at the trail entrance, a final steep staircase and a sloped path at the end of the trail/entrance to the park itself, the trail is mostly level and easy to walk. With no barriers between you and the monkeys (don't worry, they are very calm) this is a unique opportunity to observe these curious creatures in close proximity as they walk around you in the snow, wrestle with each other, endlessly groom, and of course, soak in their favourite hot spring!

Afterwards, visit Zenko-ji Temple, one of the oldest, largest, and most important Buddhist temples in Japan.

A registered National Treasure, the temple's near-1400-year history is full of legend and myth. Following this, return to your hotel in Nagano and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Please note: Driving conditions in Japan during the winter months can be significantly impacted by snowfall and ice, particularly in mountainous regions. While we strive to maintain our scheduled tour itineraries, the safety of our passengers is our utmost priority. Day 6 Nagano - Shirakawa-go - Takayama

Today is a fun day to visit the countryside of Japan and see how the local people live.

Drive to a Wasabi Farm where Japan’s most famous and flavourful crop is grown in pristine and mineral-rich waters flowing down from the North Alps.

Then proceed to Shirakawa-go - declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995, it’s famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old and noted for their slanted thatched gable roofs. They’re constructed at a steep angle to accommodate the heavy snow the town is known for as the snow is able to easily fall off the roofs in winter.

Lastly, visit Takayama Old Town and walk along Sannomachi Street, which survives in a particularly pretty state with many old homes, shops, and restaurants.

Finish the day in Takayama where you will check into your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Todays driving distance is approximately 300 kilometres.

Please note: Driving conditions in Japan during the winter months can be significantly impacted by snowfall and ice, particularly in mountainous regions. While we strive to maintain our scheduled tour itineraries, the safety of our passengers is our utmost priority. Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

A Moderate level of fitness will be required.

You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Many areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, where the unassisted use of personal walking sticks and other aids may be required. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.

Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Australian passport holders are eligible for Japan's visa exemption scheme for short-stay tourism and business travel. You don't need a visa if you're visiting for less than 90 days as a tourist, for a business trip or conference, or to visit friends and family.

We recommend you to use the Visit Japan Web to pre-register your details before arrival. Visit Japan Web is a web service to help smooth arrival procedures at the airport in Japan. You can register your information for Immigration and Customs procedures ahead of your trip, including the disembarkation card for visa exemption (for eligible travellers such as Australians). Once you have registered, you can use the QR codes from the service instead of paper forms as part of the procedures to enter Japan.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
