Day 2 Tokyo Sightseeing Tour

After breakfast, discover Tokyo’s must-see landmarks on an introductory morning tour.

Wander along gravel paths lined by towering, ancient trees as your guide explains the history and rituals associated with this sacred shrine. You'll then visit the Imperial Palace, built on the site of the former Edo Castle. This has a history dating back to the 15th century with the current palace structure completed in 1968.

Immerse yourself in a vast, verdant oasis, a sprawling 1.15 square kilometers of meticulously manicured gardens and tranquil moats, a testament to centuries of imperial tradition nestled within the heart of Chiyoda Ward.

The tour will end around lunchtime when you’ll then have free time to explore this incredible city at your own leisure.

Day 4 Tokyo – Mt Fuji – Aichi Region

After breakfast, head to Mt Fuji’s 5th Station. Located 2,300 metres above sea level, this observation point offers a commanding view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below. This makes it a popular spot even for those who do not intend on climbing the mountain as it features shrines, torii gates and souvenir shops.

Continue to Lake Kawaguchiko to admire the scenery as you enjoy a short cruise across the lake. The waters are overlooked by surrounding mountains, including Mt Fuji and Mt Komagatake. On a still, clear day, you can see a perfect mirror image of Mt Fuji reflected in the lake.

Afterwards, continue your approximately 440-kilometre travel day to Aichi prefecture. Upon arrival, check into the hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Overnight: Route-Inn Grantia Komaki or similar, Aichi Region

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Aichi Region – Kyoto – Osaka

This morning, you'll travel to Kyoto. Your first visit will be Kiyomizudera Temple, one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. Kiyomizudera is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 metres above the hillside. It was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994.

Afterwards, proceed to Kyoto city centre for free time to explore the ancient capital, or take the opportunity to join an optional tour of Kyoto (not included).

You'll then leave Kyoto early this evening to travel to Osaka. Here, you'll check into your accommodation for an evening at leisure after an approximately 200 kilometre travel day.

Optional Activity: Kyoto Half-Day Sightseeing Tour
The tour includes stopping at Fushimi Inari Shrine, an important Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto. It’s famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates which straddle a network of trails behind its main buildings. The tour continues with a visit to Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), a Zen temple in northern Kyoto that has gold leaf-covered floors on the top two floors. The last stop is Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, one of Kyoto’s top sights. Please see current pricing in Important Information. Paid on tour.

Overnight: Hotel Sobial Osaka Dome or similar, Osaka

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Osaka Free Day

Today, you can relax at the hotel, explore Osaka at your leisure or take an optional tour of Hiroshima.

Optional Activity: Hiroshima Full-Day Trip
This morning, transfer to Shin-Osaka train station where your bullet train awaits. Climb aboard and marvel at the train's incredible velocity during an approximately 1.5-hour ride to Hiroshima. On arrival, continue to Miyajimaguchi by coach or train, then board a boat to the majestic Miyajima Island. Disembark and discover the natural and cultural treasures of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Island for 45 minutes with your guide. See the shimmering Itsukushima Shrine, then revitalise with a delicious lunch in a local eatery (not included).

Re-board the boat and return to Hiroshima to reflect on the region's history. Take a moment of contemplation at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a historical site near where the atomic bomb exploded. See exhibitions that articulate the destruction the bomb caused and marvel at the city's regenerative recovery. Finally, visit the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), a skeletal structure that miraculously survived the 1945 attack. Return to the train station for the exhilarating return journey to Osaka on the bullet train, where the tour concludes. Please see current pricing in Important Information. Paid on tour.

Overnight: Hotel Sobial Osaka Dome or similar, Osaka

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Osaka – Nara – Shizuoka Region

This morning, head to Nara to visit Nara Park. This is home to more than a thousand deer which are considered the messengers of the gods. These deer have become a symbol of the city and have been designated national treasure status. Deer crackers are for sale around the park and you'll find some deer have learned to bow to visitors to ask to be fed.

You'll then visit the Todaiji Temple, one of Japan's most famous and historically significant temples and a landmark of Nara. The temple was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan.

Afterwards, continue to the Shizuoka Region and check in at the hotel for an evening at leisure after an approximately 350 kilometre travel day.

Overnight: Hotel MyStay Shimizu or similar, Shizuoka Region

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Shizuoka Region – Hakone Sightseeing - Haneda or Narita Area

Today, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Hakone on your way to Tokyo.

Hakone is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, less than 100 kilometers from Tokyo. Famous for hot springs, natural beauty and the view across Lake Ashinoko of nearby Mount Fuji, Hakone is one of the most popular destinations for those looking for a break from the busy city of Tokyo.

First stop in Hakone is Owakudani which is the viewpoint and area around a crater created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone some 3,000 years ago. Today, much of the area is an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers can be experienced. Additionally, Owakudani has good views of Mount Fuji on clear days. Eggs cooked in Owakudani's hot spring pools with their shells blackened by the sulfur are on sale at shops in the area if you are interested, and eating one is said to prolong one's life by 7 years.

Afterwards, visit the Hakone Open Air Museum. Situated in the mountains of Hakone, it spreads across 70,000 square meters and has beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. This art museum opened in 1969 and was the very first outdoor gallery in Japan. The defining feature of the Hakone Open Air Museum is the vast array of 120 sculptures spread across the grounds. Including works by sculptors from both Japan and overseas, the many sculptures of this museum invite you to get up close to appreciate what each piece is trying to convey. Because these sculptures are outside, they can create different impressions from season to season.

After leaving Hakone, you will drive back towards Tokyo and check into your hotel accommodation which is conveniently located at Haneda Airport or Narita Airport, depending on your departure airport the following day.

Today you will drive approximately 200 to 300 kilometres, depending on which airport you go to.

Overnight: APA Hotel Haneda Airport or similar OR Narita Tobu Hotel or similar, Haneda OR Narita Airport

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9 Tokyo, Japan - Australia

Today, at the appropriate time, make your own way to Haneda or Narita airport for your departure flight. Your hotel will either be connected to the airport, or offer a complimentary airport shuttle to transfer to the airport. If your hotel is further away, a group transfer will be provided.

Please note:
• Some flights may depart in the evening, although standard checkout time is 10:00 or 11:00.
• Many travellers may not arrive back in Australia until 1 day later (Day 10).
• Luggage storage is available at reception for those with later flights so they may enjoy the day at leisure before making their way to the airport.

Meals included: Breakfast; In-Flight

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Visas

A tourist visa is not required for Australian or New Zealand citizens visiting Japan for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, visiting friends or relatives, etc. that does not include remunerative activities.

We recommend you to use the Visit Japan Web to pre-register your details before arrival. Visit Japan Web is a web service to help smooth arrival procedure at the airport in Japan. You can register your information for Immigration and Customs procedures ahead of your trip, including the disembarkation card for visa exemption (for eligible travellers such as Australians). Once you have registered, you can use the QR codes from the service instead of paper forms as part of the procedures to enter Japan.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
