Day 6 Messina Strait (Transit) - Messina, Italy

Greek legends, migrating wildlife, and the occasional mirage make a journey through the Strait of Messina a uniquely fascinating voyage.

Connecting the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Ionian Sea, between the North-Eastern tip of Sicily and South-Western tip of Calabria, the narrow waterway of Italy’s Strait of Messina provides passage to more than 300 migrating bird species and is a hotbed of biodiversity.

Just three kilometres wide at its narrowest point, and with a naturally occurring whirlpool at its northern tip, the Strait has been linked to the Greek legend of Scylla and Charybdis; two opposing sea monsters believed to have inhabited the waters in ancient times. Fata Morgana, or mirage, have also been known to appear on the horizon here. Combined with spectacular coastal scenery, including the mountain ranges of Monte Dinnammare and Peloritani, a sail along the Strait of Messina holds the promise of many magical encounters.

Approximately 5 kilometres from mainland Italy, Messina sits on Sicily’s northeastern tip. Messina is known as "the door of Sicily" and has always been a lively trading centre. One of Messina’s top attractions is the astronomical clock, housed in a soaring bell tower on the Piazza del Duomo. Be there for midday, and see the display of bronze mythological figures and lions.

A wander around Piraeus will offer up a host of curiosities that beg a second look. The city has long been an integral part of Greece, serving Athens since the 5th century BC. Remnants of its significance in the Ancient Greek empire remain, and yet the buzz of modernity in the air is unmistakable.

Upon arrival into Piraeus, you may well be planning to make your way straight to Athens, where of course some of the world’s most recognisable landmarks await (charges may apply). Piraeus itself, however, is also home to its own fascinating historical relics.

Day 9 Dardanelles Strait, Türkiye (Transit)

The Dardanelles Strait is a natural body of water connecting the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara, in western Türkiye. Gaze out from the decks of your Cunard Queen at shores that have made history serving civilizations throughout the years.

As you sail in this unique part of the world, perhaps find an idyllic spot out on deck, with a glass of something refreshing and maybe even a pair of binoculars (not included). As your Cunard Queen makes her way along the strait, keep a camera handy to capture those special views to look back at again and again.

As well as looking out for the many landmarks along the coastline, keep an eye out for a variety of wildlife. The Dardanelles Strait is a known migration hot spot for fish species looking to swim to the Black Sea to graze, and while you’d be lucky to sight these, check the skies above for migrating birds too. This part of the world is considered a migratory bottleneck for birds including the Yelkouan Shearwater. You may even be lucky enough to spot an Eastern Imperial Eagle, an elusive species that predominates in Asia but has been known to thrive in isolated populations as far west as Türkiye.

Enjoy life on board the decks of your ship as you gently sail these waters, making the most of the chance to revel in the holiday spirit. Unwind on a lounger and soak up the warmth, taking a dip in the pool for a little respite from the sun should you need it, or find a shady nook in which to relax.

Please note: Your ship will not dock on this day of the itinerary.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Or maybe you’d rather have a busy day taking in as many attractions as possible? The options in Istanbul are almost endless. Throughout Istanbul you’ll find all manner of different restaurants, cafes and food stalls where you can sample some of the region’s most delicious treats.

For something savoury, you could choose a doner kebab. Popular all over the world, doner kebabs have been enjoyed in Turkiye for centuries. Lahmacun is a tasty street food you can pick up on the go in Istanbul. It’s a unique Turkish pizza topped with minced meat, onions, tomatoes, and herbs. Should you have more of a sweet tooth, Istanbul serves up a wonderful array of treats. Dates, Turkish Delight and baklava oozing with sticky syrup and pistachios are all excellent choices.

Raided and ruled by every power throughout history – Greeks, Etruscans, Normans – the height of this city seemed to prove more of a gauntlet than an obstacle. Located on the western shores of Italy’s Lazio Region, Civitavecchia will no doubt provide you with memories to cherish forever. Part of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, the name ‘Civitavecchia’ translates to “ancient town” - a title it has earned over its rich history, dating back to before the Middle Ages. Located within an hour of the Eternal City of Rome itself, the port of Civitavecchia plays host to stunningly beautiful architecture, including the imposing sixteenth-century Fort Michelangelo.

Please note:
• The following cruise itinerary makes suggestions for activities visitors can enjoy during leisure time in each port. Additional charges may apply.
• Some ports may be accessed by tender boats. Boarding and disembarking tender boats may involve steps and uneven surfaces.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Dinner

Day 5 Cruising

A cruising day aboard the Queen Elizabeth is a chance to slow down and savour the elegance of the journey. With no ports to rush toward, guests can enjoy leisurely breakfasts, ocean views from the deck, afternoon tea in classic Cunard style, and quiet moments by the pool or in the library. As the ship glides smoothly across open water, the day feels calm and refined, ending with fine dining and evening entertainment that make the voyage just as memorable as the destinations.

Day 6 Palermo, Sicily, Italy

Palermo is a vibrant city. You may want to take a stroll to the famous Vucciria Market and find a bargain. It's open 7 days a week, operating from morning to evening.

The cool Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo are an unusual treat, while above ground you can wander Palermo's grand boulevards: the Corso Vittorio Emanuele or Via Maqueda, or both (charges may apply).

Day 7 Messina Strait, Italy (Transit)

Please note: Your ship will not dock on this day of the itinerary.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 8 Corfu, Greece

With its sun-kissed beaches, incredible history and culture, and delicious Greek cuisine, Corfu is a must-see destination if you’re embarking on a cruise of the Greek islands.

Corfu is known for its picturesque old fishing villages, warm waters and jaw-dropping coastal roads that will make you feel as though you are a million miles away from home. As the second-largest Ionian island, there is a lot to see from the moment you sail into Corfu.

Corfu is one of the most interesting Greek islands, with stunning scenery that can be admired from its glorious port. Located within walking distance of the town of Corfu, the cruise port has had a huge influence on the island’s economy. Today, it is included in the vast majority of Adriatic Sea cruise itineraries. Cruise ships dock at Corfu port on the eastern coast, with a cruise ship terminal located on the Neo Limani.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Dubrovnik, Croatia

The pearl of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik, provides the perfect mix of culture-rich experiences, delicious dining, and breathtaking scenery. Not forgetting the opportunity to explore the iconic Old City Walls, which were heavily featured in HBO’s fantasy series, Game of Thrones.

Drift into a land of Baroque charm, making memories that will stay with you long after you depart. With Italy to the west and Montenegro to the east, the historic town of Dubrovnik lies close to Croatia’s southern tip. Approximately three kilometres north of Dubrovnik’s town centre, you’ll dock at the port of Gruž, with shuttles available to transport you into the Old Town (charges apply). The picturesque dock plays host to small fishing boats and gargantuan cruise ships alike, and radiates a welcoming charm all on its own.

Looking out onto the warm blue of the Adriatic Sea, you’ll be taken aback by the overwhelming beauty of the ancient architecture as you first glance at the famous Old City Walls. But this attraction is just one of many in this unique European city.

Day 10 Zadar, Croatia

Situated around halfway up the coast of Croatia, Zadar is as ideally located as it is charming. Both the Romans and the Venetians have laid claim to the city in the past, and the influence of both can be seen throughout Zadar today, specifically in its architecture.

Zadar is home to a number of fascinating historical sites, and Kalelarga (translating to Calle Larga – or Wide Street) in the Old Town is widely considered the most important. Kalelarga dates back more than 2,000 years, to the time of the Roman Emperor Augustus, and has long been a hub of activity in Zadar. As well as plenty of shops and cafes, Kalelarga is home to St Anastasia’s Cathedral, built in the 12th and 13th centuries, and St Donatus Church, with origins in the 9th century.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 11 Trieste, Italy

A little slice of eternal Italy that sits between Slovenia and the Adriatic Coast. Trieste is a charming destination which has been furnished decorously by grandeur and royalty through the centuries. The heart of the medieval old city and its neo-classical Austrian quarter offer great expressions of this seaport’s colourful past. The food is divine, the culture vibrant, and ambience quite unique.

The important capital of the Friuli Venezia Guilia region of northeast Italy, Trieste may be small but it has a big story to tell. The Roman theatre built between the first and second century AD now plays host to performances throughout the summer months. From Byzantine times to Germanic, Jewish and Slavic influences, traces of great rulers and regimes gone by live on in today’s architecture all around. Take a tour in any direction for a fascinating discovery of the times and tastes of Trieste on your Mediterranean cruise.

Cephalonia’s unspoilt and timeless allure is a wonderful setting for a true love story – captured in Louis de Bernieres 1994 novel, and the 2001 Nicolas Cage film, Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

The largest of the Ionian islands, Cephalonia is home to around 36,000 residents, living mainly in the coastal towns and resorts. Others live much as they have done for centuries, in remote mountain villages.

Overnight: Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 14 Katakolon (for Olympia), Greece

Katakolon is an attractive port set against a backdrop of rolling mountains, giving way to the Ionian Sea and separating the ocean from the Gulf of Kyparissia.

From Katakolon, you could visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site and ancient wonder of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic games, with extensive and well-preserved ruins that include a stadium and temples dedicated to the gods Hera and Zeus (extra charges apply).

Situated in an Elis valley, Olympia was also a national shrine to the gods, and contained a number of temples, monuments and statues.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Mediterranean
From May to October, the Mediterranean experiences a classic transition from a lush, mild spring to a hot, dry summer, followed by a warm and pleasant autumn. In May, temperatures across Spain, Italy, Greece, and Turkiye generally range from 18°C to 24°C, making it ideal for sightseeing before the intense heat arrives. July and August represent the peak of summer, with coastal highs typically reaching 28°C to 35°C, while inland areas in Turkiye and southern Spain can frequently exceed 35°C. During this period, the sea temperature warms significantly, often reaching a balmy 24°C to 27°C by late summer. As the region moves into September and October, the heat mellows into a comfortable 20°C to 26°C in Malta and the Greek Islands, while Croatia and northern Italy begin to see cooler evenings around 15°C. Overall, this six-month window offers remarkably consistent sunshine and minimal rainfall, particularly in the eastern Mediterranean and southern islands.

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Dietary Requests
Meal options and availability differ between airlines and routes therefore not all dietary requests can be accommodated. If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

• Due to security reasons, all guests must be on board 2 hours before sailing.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

A relaxed level of fitness will be required.
Expect a comfortable pace of touring with a focus on leisure time and gentle activity. This may include city tours, the ability to walk up and down small flights of stairs and gentle slopes. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Some areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, with personal walking sticks and other aids required should they be needed. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.

Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Yellow Fever:
A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate upon arrival.
You must check with your doctor well before leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Wildlife sighting:
TripADeal cannot guarantee animal sightings on tour. Wildlife are unpredictable and factors such as weather conditions, predatory fear and animal movements can impact sightings.

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Montenegro
Australian passport holders can stay for up to 90 days within a 6-month period without a Tourist Visa from the date of entry into Montenegro.

Europe (Schengen Visa Countries)
A tourist visa is not required for Europe for stays up to 90 days if travelling on an Australian passport.

European Union Entry/Exit System (EES)
From October 12, 2025, a new European Entry System (EES) replaces the current manual passport-stamping process for non-EU travellers. Upon arrival in the Schengen area, Australian and New Zealand passport holders will have their fingerprints recorded and a photograph taken. Their entry and exit dates will be electronically registered. No previous action is required, but please be aware of longer wait times at border entry. From 10 April 2026, the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of all the European countries (Schengen area) using the system.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)
As an extension of the EES implementation introduced from 2025, ETIAS travel authorisation is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries, including Australian and New Zealand citizens, that will be introduced in 2026. We advise you to monitor smartraveller.com.au closer to your departure to ensure you are up to date on the requirements at the time of entry.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
