Beyond the architecture, you'll encounter the daily life of locals from hardworking street vendors with their incredible goods to the constant rhythm of people hurrying through the city. This tour, founded in 2010 by a group of young, innovative guides, goes beyond the typical sights to reveal a new side of the city few get to see. Day 3 San Jose - Tortuguero

This morning depart San Jose early for Tortuguero, often called the “Amazon of Costa Rica”, a remote and biologically diverse national park located on the country’s northern Caribbean coast. Admire the biodiversity as the bus travels through Braulio Carrilo National Park before stopping on route for a delicious typical Costa Rican breakfast. Continue on to reach Cano Blanco/Pavona pier where you’ll board a boat in preparation to explore the canals. Tortuguero is known for its intricate network of freshwater canals, lush rainforests and most importantly, its vital role as nesting ground for sea turtles. Upon arrival at the lodge, enjoy a refreshing cocktail and delicious lunch before departing in the afternoon for a guided visit to Tortuguero Village, with its Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous influences, friendly locals, and lively music. In the evening, experience a traditional Costa Rican Caribbean dinner before retiring for the evening to the sounds of the jungle.

Pachira Lodge is located near Tortuguero National Park in Costa Rica, it is known for its proximity to the park's entrance, scenic canals, and rich flora and fauna. It has 14 hectares full of exotic flora and fauna. At the lodge, you'll be able to explore the rainforest, have wildlife encounters, and partake in activities like sea turtle nesting (when in season, additional costs apply). Day 4 Tortuguero

After breakfast, you'll start your day with a guided walking tour through the trails surrounding the lodge, offering a fantastic opportunity to see the rainforest up close. You'll have some free time before lunch to relax or explore on your own. In the afternoon, the main event begins as you visit Tortuguero National Park. You'll explore the intricate network of natural and man-made canals in small, open boats designed to give you the best visibility. This river system is a highway for local wildlife, where you can search for birds, monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, and caimans.

The canals also protect endangered species like the West Indian Manatee. Tortuguero was established as a national park in 1970 and has since been expanded to cover over 76,000 hectares of both land and sea. Most of the park is dedicated to absolute conservation, making it a critical habitat for wildlife. It's internationally famous for protecting the largest green turtle nesting beach in the Western Hemisphere. The park's ecosystems are incredibly complex and diverse, making every tour a unique experience. Its remote location, accessible only by boat, has helped preserve its wild character and the traditions of small local communities. After the tour, you'll have some free time before dinner.

Overnight: Pachira Lodge or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 5 Tortuguero - Arenal

After breakfast this morning you’ll depart by boat back to the pier and then be transferred to your next destination, please note today’s transit is via shared services. En-route you’ll stop for lunch (included).

Today, journey to the Arenal 1968 Volcano View and Lava Trails in the Arenal Volcano National Park, where you'll get as close to the base of the Arenal Volcano as possible by vehicle. From there, you'll walk approximately 1.5 hour along a volcanic stone path with moderate difficulty to reach the viewpoint—the closest accessible point to the volcano. At the viewpoint, your guide will share insights about the Arenal Volcano’s formation, its active periods, and details about its first eruption in 1968. You'll also enjoy stunning views of the Green Lagoon and Lake Arenal.

After taking in the sights, you'll descend the same trail and enter the regenerating forest, transitioning into the primary rainforest that borders the Arenal Volcano. On this 2.5 kilometre trail, you might spot a variety of rainforest flora and fauna, including toucans, turkeys, orioles, peccaries, and monkeys. At the end of the tour, you'll be greeted with a refreshing snack of tropical fruit before heading back to your hotel in La Fortuna.

What to Bring: Hiking shoes or sneakers, comfortable clothing, a raincoat, camera, sunscreen, and biodegradable insect repellent.

Day 7 Arenal - Monteverde

This morning, you will transfer to Arenal Lake. Upon arrival at the dam, board a comfortable pontoon boat for a scenic 30-minute ride across the lake to Chiquito River, a small community on the opposite shore. Arenal Lake, the largest and most significant lake in Costa Rica, was created in 1974 for hydroelectric power. It’s also a hotspot for birdwatching, with a variety of resident and migratory species, and occasional sightings of mammals like monkeys and sloths. After reaching Chiquito River, continue your journey by land for approximately 1.5 hours to Monteverde.

Along the way, marvel at the transition from rainforest to cloud forest as you ascend to an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters above sea level. Monteverde, located in Puntarenas province, is renowned for its cloud forests, misty landscapes, coffee plantations, and vibrant wildlife. The quaint town of Santa Elena offers charming restaurants and artisan shops, while the nearby rainforest is teeming with biodiversity.

Upon arrival in Santa Elena, check in to your accommodation and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

Overnight: Hotel Los Cipreses Monteverde or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Monteverde Cloud Forest

This morning, wake up early and enjoy breakfast at the hotel before heading out on a guided walk to explore Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, one of the most breathtaking in the world. It is a tropical rainforest, but because of its altitude (1400 meters or 4.600 feet), it's called a Cloud Forest. A cloud forest is a highland forest characterised by nearly 100% humidity throughout the year. Here in Monteverde, warm north-easterly trade winds, filled with moisture, blow in from the Atlantic. As the winds sweep up to the Continental Divide, they cool and condense to form clouds, bathing the forest in a constant soft mist.

The cloud forest receives an incredible four meters of rain every year- over twelve feet! It is home to rare and unusual wildlife as well as over 450 species of birds including the world's largest population of quetzal birds. An expert guide will lead you through the network of trails in the reserve that stretches across 13 kilometres of the forest. The trails are well-maintained and perfect for day trips. Step foot on the Continental Divide, where one foot will be on the Caribbean side and the other on the Pacific side. With views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, this reserve is full of plants and animals. In fact the reserve is home to over 100 species of mammals including white-faced and howler monkeys, pacas, porcupines, deer, ocelots, jaguars, and pumas. There are also 160 species of reptiles and amphibians including 29 species of lizards, 71 snakes and 60 amphibian species. The reserve is most famous for the exotic birds that inhabit it such as the resplendent quetzals, bellbirds, emerald toucanets, toucans, trogons, and many species of hummingbirds.

Please note: The guided walk lasts approximately 2.5 hours.

Overnight: Hotel Los Cipreses Monteverde or similar

Day 9 Monteverde - Manuel Antonio

Upon arrival, you'll have free time to settle in and explore this bustling coastal village.

Day 10 Manuel Antonio National Park

This morning, discover the Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the most famous in Costa Rica due to its wide variety of flora and fauna. Although it is the country’s smallest national park, the stunning beauty and diversity of wildlife in its 24 square kilometres is unequalled. Manuel Antonio contains a charming combination of rainforest, beaches and coral reefs. These beaches are among the most beautiful in the country, lined with lush forests, and the snorkelling is excellent as well. The forest is home to sloths, iguanas, rare and adorable squirrel monkeys, white-faced monkeys and millions of colourful little crabs.

On this half-day walk, a very knowledgeable nature guide will walk you through the park, explaining the mysteries of the rainforest. Through the hike, you will enjoy a leisure stop at the famous Third Beach. Once there you can rest on the beach or play with the waves. Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
May – June
This period marks the official start of Costa Rica’s green season. While rainfall becomes more frequent, it’s still interspersed with plenty of warm sunshine, particularly in the Central Valley, Caribbean Coast, and Northern Pacific. Average temperatures range between 24°C and 29°C. National parks are quieter, allowing for longer, uninterrupted wildlife viewing, while surfers will appreciate the increasing swells along the country’s top surfing beaches.

July – August
Rainfall continues to increase, but this doesn’t deter many visitors, especially families travelling during school holidays to enjoy Costa Rica’s wealth of adventure activities. Daytime temperatures hover around 23°C to 28°C. This is a prime time to spot green sea turtles nesting along Tortuguero National Park’s coastline and marks the beginning of whale-watching season near Dominical. For travellers craving beach time, the far northern Pacific coast remains a sunny option, as it receives the lowest rainfall year-round.

November – December
The rainy season starts to taper off, though the timing of the final heavy showers can be unpredictable. Some areas may still experience downpours until the end of November, with daytime temperatures averaging 22°C to 27°C. By mid-December, the rains ease, ushering in the drier season and making it an ideal time to explore both the beaches and national parks.

Weather
We always suggest referring to an online source for the most up-to-date weather information for your destination/s.

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Dietary Requests
Meal options and availability differ between airlines and routes therefore not all dietary requests can be accommodated. If your flight includes meals we will select the most suitable option available based on the dietary requirements you have specified. All meal requests are subject to airline approval and are not guaranteed, therefore we recommend preparing for your flight by bringing appropriate food for yourself, as required.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 90 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

COACH TOUR
Meals:
For meals not included, the tour leader (when available) will offer assistance with reservations, suggestions and directions to local restaurants. It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements.
Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.
Luggage:
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

OTHER
Mobility:
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf.

Fitness Level Required:
Adventure (and spontaneity) create some of the best travel memories. Bear in mind, your home schedules and timings might not be adhered to on tour - it's all part of the fun!

Expect a moderate pace of touring with a focus on guided tours that may include full days with extended activity, guided city tours or nature walks. You will require a general level of fitness for unassisted navigation of stairs and inclines, longer distances with possible periods of standing when visiting sites, walking on sloping, uneven ground or elevations. You will be responsible for your own luggage and have the ability to board all modes of transport without assistance. Please note: Many areas may be inaccessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters, where the unassisted use of personal walking sticks and other aids may be required. Although some assistance may be available, every traveller should be self-reliant during all aspects of their travel.
Please note: It is expected that every traveller must be self-reliant and able to undertake all aspects of their own travel. Please speak to your booking agent about your personal circumstances and any assistance requirements to ensure this tour is right for you.

Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

Yellow Fever:
A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate upon arrival.
You must check with your doctor well before leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Costa Rica
On an Australian passport, you don't need a visa for a tourist visit of less than 90 days. You might be refused entry if you can't show that you'll return home or travel onwards. Entry and exit conditions can change. Contact the Embassy of Costa Rica for details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine rules.

United States (Transiting)
If travelling on an Australian passport, an ESTA (visa waiver) for the USA is a strict requirement when travelling to or flying through the USA. Once a USA ESTA visa waiver is issued it is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner) and will allow multiple entries into the USA. For information on ESTA eligibility or to apply, please visit: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/
Please note: Due to recent changes to USA immigration policies, TripADeal recommends all travellers visit US Customs & Border Protection

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
