Day 13 Elephant Island, Antarctica

Arrive: 09:30 - Depart: 14:30

Promising thrilling adventure, legendary tales and immaculate Antarctic beauty, Elephant Island is perhaps Antarctica’s best-known location. Follow in the footsteps of the brave explorers who first sought out the these dangerous and evocative icy landscapes. Believed to take its name from the elephant seals that early explorers spotted lolling on its rocks, the volcanic island was not properly explored until 1916 - when Ernest Shackleton and his men were shipwrecked on its shores. The remarkable, slowly flowing Endurance Glacier takes its name from Shackleton's ship, The Endurance, and their story of survival is one of humanity’s most evocative and inspiring accounts.

Visit the monument that stands to Shackleton at Point Wild, the spot where he and his 28 crew members camped for four and a half months during a harsh Antarctic winter. Eventually, Shackleton and a handful of courageous men braved the journey and sailed for South Georgia Island, before returning to secure the rescue of the remaining crew members.

Then, feel the rush of adventure as you continue the journey to the Antarctic Peninsula.

One included shore excursion:

  • Zodiac cruise with the Silversea Expedition Team

Overnight: Silver Wind or Silver Cloud

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 14 Antarctic Sound, Antarctica

Few voyages ignite the imagination like a journey to one of the planet’s most remote, extreme and enchanting wildernesses, Antarctica. Experience adventure in its purest form - only a handful of people will ever be lucky enough to immerse themselves the majestic beauty of these icy monochrome landscapes first-hand. The Antarctic Sound is located at the northerly tip of the Antarctic Peninsula that sprawls up like a tentacle towards Tierra del Fuego - South America’s most southerly point known as the ‘End of the World’.

Taking its name from the first ship to brave the passageway between the peninsula and the Joinville Island groups back in 1902, the Sound is a sensory assault of imposing icebergs, broken away from the Larsen Ice Shelf. Come face-to-face with stadium-sized islands of ice and meet the extraordinary birdlife that call this whitewash kingdom home. Keep your camera handy for chance encounters to capture colonies of Gentoo penguins as they hop around, cape petrels sweeping overhead, breaching whales and more as this great white continent’s wildlife thrives around you.

Two included shore excursions:

  • Zodiac cruise with the Silversea Expedition Team
  • Hiking with the Silversea Expedition Team

Overnight: Silver Wind or Silver Cloud

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 15 Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica

Unseen by humans until 1820, this adventure sure to make your hairs stand on end as you experience the thrill of the unknown and the extraordinary. The vast Antarctic Peninsula is sprinkled with research bases at the frontline of human scientific endeavour and endurance to study and understand this unique landscape, its exceptional wildlife and the impact that humans are having on this pristine continent. Witness cathedral-sized icebergs up close and blue-hued glaciers, slowly slipping from imposing locations like Hope Bay. Blanched mountain peaks cover the peninsula and you’ll find thousands of adorable Adelie penguin pairs thriving undisturbed in this peninsula’s unique setting.

Two included shore excursions:

  • Zodiac cruise with the Silversea Expedition Team
  • Hiking with the Silversea Expedition Team

Overnight: Silver Wind or Silver Cloud

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Overnight: Silver Wind or Silver Cloud

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 17 South Shetland Islands, Antarctica

Lying close to the northwestern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, separated by the Bransfield Strait, are the South Shetland Islands. Several countries maintain research bases here with plump elephant seals and crowds of Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adelie Penguins.

King George Island is the largest and most hospitable island, hosting the majority of the research stations - some of which are populated all-year-round. The triple peaks of Mount Foster tower above the archipelago as you sail into the core of Deception Island’s magnificent collapsed volcano caldera. You might like to hike the lunar-like landscapes within, and or opt to take dip into the improbably warm waters of Pendulum Cove that are heated by geothermal sources. Elephant Island also lies among the islands and is written deep into the annals of Antarctic expedition legend, as the site where Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance heroically survived an Antarctic winter during 1916.

One included shore excursion:

  • Zodiac Cruise with Silversea Expedition Team

Overnight: Silver Wind or Silver Cloud

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 18 Drake Passage

Sailing the legendary Drake Passage is an experience that few are ever lucky enough to experience. Converging warm and cool ocean currents attract some spectacular animal life to the passage. Watch for the distant cliffs, glaciers and mountains to come into view as you sail north from Antarctica. As the southern tip of the Americas appears and as this spine-tingling adventure comes to an end, you may be followed by soaring albatrosses, or a pod of humpbacks and dolphins or two.

Overnight: Silver Wind or Silver Cloud

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 19 Puerto Williams, Chile

Arrive: 22:00 - Overnight

Dock in Puerto Williams for the night. This Chilean city is located on Navarino Island on the southern shores of the Beagle Channel. While it claims to be the “southernmost city in the world”, owing to its small size (approximately 2500 residents) the much larger nearby Argentinean city of Ushuaia has also claimed the title. The surrounding scenery is magnificent where wild, windswept mountains are regularly dusted with snow. The city itself has the dramatic backdrop called “Dientes de Navarino” (literally “teeth of Navarino”) rivalling the famous Torres del Paine.

Puerto Williams offers logistical support to Antarctic bases and more recently has become a departure point for both scientific and tourism trips to the Antarctic region. The port offers a quieter, more relaxed experience with its small village atmosphere, complete with rustic buildings and the homely smell of drifting wood smoke. Here lies a haven of peace, literally at the end of the world.

Overnight: Silver Wind or Silver Cloud

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Visas

Chile:
To enter Chile, Australian citizens must obtain a visa before arrival. The application process can be lengthy, so allow yourself enough time before your planned travel. When travelling to Chile, you'll get a tourist card (paper) on arrival. You must keep the card and present it to immigration officials when departing Chile. You can request a new copy online if your tourist card is lost or stolen. Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. Contact the Embassy or Consulate of Chile for details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine rules.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules are subject to change. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination/s you are visiting once you receive your travel documentation to ensure you have the most up to date information.
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking.
