The area around the river mouth is pristine and those who explore the area on this walking trail will be rewarded by an ever-changing landscape with waterfalls, rockpools, eucalypt forest and vast expansive views of beautiful Disaster Bay. During the walk, watch for eastern water dragons sunning themselves near the creek and marvel at hermit crabs on the beach at low tide. Merrica River has a pair of resident sea eagles which can often be spotted patrolling for food. Then head back to the accommodation to unpack and here enjoy pre-dinner nibbles followed by a two-course meal prepared by your guides.

Please note: as you have an early start this morning, it is advisable to arrive in Merimbula at least 1 day prior.

This lovely walk undulates south past spectacular coastal forest, sandy beaches, rocky bays, sheltered inlets and ocean platforms.

Leather Jacket Bay offers a scenic stretch of red rocks, coloured by iron oxide which cemented the sand particles together many millions of years ago, while small and peaceful Mowarry provides a picturesque sandy beach. There are plenty of spots along the trail to rest and relax, or to enjoy a spot of birdwatching. Whales frequent the area from late May to early December so it’s a great time for whale watching while walking along the trail.

After the day’s walk head back to the accommodation for well-earned pre-dinner nibbles followed by a fabulous two-course meal prepared by your guides.

Walking time: Approx. 6hrs

There are also great opportunities for birdwatching and of course whale watching. Be sure to keep your eyes open for the endangered ground parrots or rare striated field wrens. There is a myriad of other wildlife, if you are lucky, you might catch sight of echidna, kangaroo or goanna in the area.

This last section of the Light to Light follows a route that has been travelled by lightkeepers over many years. Originally, supplies for the lighthouse were off-loaded at Bittangabee Bay and remnants of the old horse-drawn tram track still remain. Travel north through Eden and stop off enroute to Merimbula for the last walk of the trip – the spectacular Haycock Bay to Barmouth Beach walk. This pleasant walk follows the headland on the southern shore of the Pambula River estuary.

FAQ
What do you need to bring?
- Clothing for the duration of the trip
- A comfortable pair of walking shoes (runners or flat-soled shoes will not suffice except as something you can wear after a day’s activity)
- Toiletries and any personal medication.
- Walking poles with a telescopic arm (if you are comfortable with using these).
- Other items relevant to specific trips will be detailed in trip notes sent to you prior to travel.

Do I need to carry all my gear with me on the walks?
You are only required to carry a day back pack with you on the walking trails. This should contain your lunch/snacks, plenty of water (bottled or in a water bladder), sunscreen/sunhat, light waterproof jacket, and a hat/beanie is a good idea if the weather is likely to be changeable.

What's the best kind of bag to use for all my gear?
A soft bag is ideal for the trip. Soft bags are more forgiving in terms of packing/unpacking and storage. They are also more manageable for the guides to lift and move around.

Are hiking boots compulsory?
Although not compulsory, comfortable hiking boots are strongly encouraged on the hikes. Often the ground underfoot is rocky and uneven, and hiking boots make the walking a little easier. If you are going to purchase new boots specifically for the hike, Park Trek suggest you wear them in well before the walk begins.

Is there a ‘packing list’ with ideas on what to pack?
A recommended packing list will be provided with your travel pack that is sent after your booking confirmation.

Will you cater for dietary requirements?
With prior notification (usually on booking) Park Trek can cater for most dietary requirements, ie: lactose intolerance, coeliac, vegetarian, gluten free to name a few. Even if its a simple request such as: “I prefer soy milk” the tour can cater for this.

I have a few dietary restrictions and was wondering if it’s okay to bring some foods along with me?
If you have a favorite brand of food you particularly like, or a food item with a particular flavor for example, by all means bring it along with you. There are some restrictions on bringing in fresh food in some locations, ie you can not take honey onto Kangaroo Island. If you are unsure just check with Park Trek and they can advise you of any restrictions that may apply to the destination of your tour.

Is alcohol included?
Park Trek only offers non-alcoholic beverages while on tour. However guests are weclome to bring wine/beer along with them. If you are bringing bottled wine, please pack this well in your main bag to avoid breakages. The tour often stops en-route on the first day at a bottle shop where you can purchase alcohol for the tour.

Are there any extra expenses on the trip?
Unless listed in the itinerary, such as a restaurant meal or coffee, all expenses are included in the tour price. There are no hidden extra costs, such as National Park fees or transfer charges.

Do you pick up from the hotels on the first day of the tour?
On the first day of the tour Park Trek collects guests from a central pickup point. This point is listed in the trip notes you receive upon booking your tour.
