Day 11 Ketchikan, Alaska

Arrive: 06:30
Depart: 15:00

Ketchikan is known as Alaska's 'First City' because it's the first major community travellers come to as they take the journey north. Located on an island, Ketchikan began life as a fishing camp. In the early 1900s, when gold was Alaska's claim to fame, fishing and timber industries were established in Ketchikan. The growth of these industries helped make this Inside Passage port Alaska's fifth-largest city.

Visitors to Ketchikan will be intrigued by its rich Native heritage, which includes a collection of totem poles at Totem Heritage Center (additional charges may apply). The Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian are all a part of the city's colourful history.
With its abundance of salmon, Ketchikan is also a sportfishing paradise. Sightseers will be impressed with both the scenic town and its surroundings, especially Misty Fjords National Monument (not included).

Day 12 Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier (Scenic Cruising) - Juneau, Alaska

Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier (Scenic Cruising)
From 05:00 to 09:00

This narrow fjord is located approximately 50 miles southeast of Juneau and is part of the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness area. Breathtaking Endicott Arm extends over 30 miles long with nearly one-fifth of its area covered in ice. At the head of the fjord, tidewater glaciers such as the Dawes Glacier, regularly expel enormous chunks of ice into the waters below in a magnificent process known as calving. During the summer, icebergs float along the surface of the glistening water in an array of sizes from just a few inches up to three stories wide.

Protected within the Tongass National Forest, Endicott Arm is a haven for wildlife. Black and brown bears, deer, wolves, harbour seals, mountain goats and a variety of seabirds have been spotted in the area. As you glide through the pristine fjord, you'll first pass by a lush forest where a number of beautiful waterfalls cascade down before being treated to views of snowcapped mountains and blue-tinged glaciers.

Juneau
Arrive 12.30
Depart 21:00

In 1880, it was slow going for Joe Juneau and Richard Harris as they searched for gold with the help of native guides. After climbing mountains, forging streams and facing countless difficulties, they found nuggets "as large as beans" and from their discovery came three of the largest gold mines in the world. By the end of World War II, more than $150 million in gold had been mined. Eventually, the mines closed but the town Joe Juneau founded became the capital of Alaska and the business of gold was replaced by the business of government. Some 30,000 people live in Juneau and its total area makes it one of the biggest towns, in size, in the world. Today Juneau is famous not only for gold and government but also for its breathtakingly beautiful glaciers and stunning views of both water and mountains.

Day 13 Skagway, Alaska

Arrive: 06:00
Depart: 17:00

Skagway was the gateway to the gold fields for the thousands who flocked to Alaska and the Yukon with the hope of striking it rich. Skagway may have boasted the shortest route to the Klondike, but it wasn't the easiest. Over 100 years ago, the White Pass route through the Coast Mountains and the shorter but steeper Chilkoot Trail were used by countless stampeders. Many a would-be miner perished on the treacherous Chilkoot Trail. The gold rush was a boon so by 1898, Skagway was Alaska's largest town with a population of about 10,000 with hotels, saloons, dance halls and gambling houses prospering. When the gold yield dwindled in 1900, so did the population as miners quickly shifted to new finds in Nome. Today, Skagway has approximately 1,000 residents and still retains the flavour of the gold rush era.

Day 15 Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Arrive: 07:00
Depart: 00:00

Victoria exudes old-world charm and fragrant colourful flowers can be found everywhere.

Founded in 1843 by James Douglas of the Hudson's Bay Company, the city was first known as Fort Victoria. By 1849, Vancouver Island was a British colony and Victoria was its capital. In 1858, Victoria was a tent city and the base for some 25,000 prospectors on their way to the Frasier River gold fields. When Vancouver Island was incorporated with mainland British Columbia in 1868, Victoria became the capital of the entire province.

Although it's a port city, Victoria is not as industrially oriented as Vancouver. The harbours, especially Inner Harbour, are dotted with pleasure craft, ferries and floatplanes. The city is renowned for its beautiful gardens, charming houses and very British feel.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts. Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader. Visas

Canada

Australian and New Zealand passport holders must apply for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Canada by air. An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA.

United States
If travelling on an Australian passport, an ESTA (Visa Waiver) for the USA is a strict requirement when travelling to or flying through the USA. Once a USA ESTA Visa Waiver is issued it is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner) and will allow multiple entries into the USA. For information on ESTA eligibility or to apply, please visit: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/
Please note: Due to recent changes in the USA Immigration policies, TripADeal recommends all travellers visit US Customs & Border Protection.
Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
