For over a century, Bali has fascinated the Western imagination. The island embodies the very essence of the exotic and mysterious East. Steep hillsides of tropical green reveal terraced rice paddies while plantations of coffee, banana, cacao and fragrant spices line the roads. Monkeys haunt the grounds of a sacred temple in a forest, while traditional villages produce intricately stylised batik, superb jewellery and beautiful paintings. And Balinese dance, with its angular movements and rhythms, remains somehow stirring and shocking. Bali may be accessible, but it remains forever exotic.

The port of Aqaba has been an important strategic and commercial centre for over three millennia. Originally called Elath, the home of the Edomites became in Roman times a trading centre where goods from as far away as China found entry to Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
Aqaba is Jordan's only seaport, and the city serves as an intriguing gateway to venture into the surrounding desert to the lost city of Petra, dating to around 6,000 B.C., and Wadi Rum, where an English soldier named T.E. Lawrence found his destiny as "Lawrence of Arabia."

Transiting through the Suez Canal is sure to be one of the lifelong memories of your cruise. The thought of a canal linking the Mediterranean and Red Sea extends back in history. Napoleon Bonaparte, pursuing his dreams of conquest, entertained the notion in 1798. But it was French engineer Ferdinand de Lesseps who finally proved that a canal across the Suez was practicable. Work on the canal began in 1859. Ten years later the opening of the Suez Canal was an international event. The world had acquired a quicker route to Asia.

Having added Egypt to his empire, Alexander the Great decreed that a new city be raised as his imperial capital and named it Alexandria. The young conqueror never lived to see his dream realised, dying eight years later at the age of 32. But the city he founded would play a major role in world history for the next 20 centuries. Alexandria was the capital of Egypt under the Ptolemies and the Roman Empire. An early centre of Christianity, the city was famed as a focus of commerce and culture - a legacy that endured until the waning of the Byzantine Empire in the 14th century. Under Ottoman rule, Alexandria suffered a long period of decline until Muhammad Ali revived its fortunes in the 1800s. Today Alexandria is Egypt's second-largest city with a population of 5 million.

This small island in the Dodecanese enjoys a singular honour. In 1981 the Greek Parliament passed a special resolution designating Patmos a "Sacred Island." For rocky and barren Patmos claims one of the holiest spots in Christendom: The Grotto of the Revelation. Exiled from Ephesus in 95 A.D., St. John retired to Patmos spending 18 months in a cave. There he received the visions that resulted in Revelation, the last Book of the New Testament. Travellers can still view the Saint's Grotto and climb the path to the 11th-century monastery of St. John the Theologian.
Patmos occupies a place in classical mythology as well. Orestes fled to Patmos to escape the Furies after avenging the murder of his father Agamemnon.

From the port of Kusadasi on Turkey's Anatolian Coast, one travels into the past. Nearby stands the ruins of ancient Ephesus, a major site of archaeological excavation. The city was once a Roman provincial capital and trading centre. Ephesus is also home to several of Christendom's holiest sites. St. Paul preached at the Great Theatre and the ruins of Ephesus' Basilica cover the tomb of Christ's most beloved disciple, St. John the Apostle.
In Kusadasi, whitewashed stone houses rise in tiers behind the market district. The palm-lined esplanade is the centre of town life, with thousands of merchants offering wares to rival the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.

Athens is the capital of Greece, once the heart of Ancient Greece.
In Athens, the past maintains a vibrant presence in the cradle of Western civilization. Atop the Acropolis, the serene Parthenon sails above the commotion of the modern city. The tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides were performed in the Theatre of Dionysus at the foot of the Acropolis. On Pnyx hill, citizens of a fledgling democracy gathered to cast their votes on Athens' destiny. Then there is the hustle and bustle of the modern city, a metropolis of over 3 million that spreads out from the foot of Mt. Lycabettus and across the plain. Packed with busy shops and lively tavernas, modern Athens is a colourful counterpoint to classical Greece.
Piraeus is the port city for Athens and has been Athens' port of entry for over two millennia.
Please note: Piraeus is approximately 10 kilometres from the centre of Athens.

Malta is the largest in a group of seven islands that occupy a strategic position between Europe and Africa. The island's history is long and turbulent. Everyone from the Normans to the Nazis has vied for control of this small, honey-coloured rock. For centuries the island was the possession of the knightly Order of St. John - the Knights Hospitaller. Valletta, Malta's current capital, was planned by the Order's Grandmaster Jean de Parisot Valette to secure the island's eastern coast from Turk incursions. Founded in 1566, Valletta's bustling streets are lined with superb Baroque buildings and churches.
Malta has a long history: the megalithic stone temples at Gozo may be the oldest freestanding structures on Earth. Malta has two official languages, Maltese (constitutionally the national language) and English. Malta was admitted to the European Union in 2004 and in 2008 became part of the eurozone.

Palermo is a cultural feast, a fascinating combination of East and West, Arab and Norman that is quite unlike any other European city on the Mediterranean. A simple stroll can serve to illustrate Palermo's rich heritage. The Quattro Canti is the great square at the heart of the city. A short walk past its 17th-century palazzos and fountains brings the traveller to the Palazzo dei Normanni. Begun by Arab emirs in the 9th century, the Palazzo was finished by the island's Norman conquerors. The Palazzo's stone arches and buttresses stand in stark contrast to its Palatine Chapel. Their elaborate tile work and mosaics lend mute testimonies to the Islamic and Byzantine influences that also shaped Palermo's culture. The city abounds in such colourful sights, from the neo-classical Teatro Massimo, one of the largest opera houses in Europe, to the Catacombe dei Cappuccini, where thousands of mummified bodies lie in eternal rest.

Perhaps their country's harsh climate encouraged the Finns' love and respect for design and the arts. Whatever the cause, there's no denying that Helsinki is one of the most vibrant and beautiful cities in Scandinavia. Hailed as the "Daughter of the Baltic", Finland's capital is a city of graceful neoclassical buildings, striking modern architecture and spacious boulevards dotted with squares and parks. In the past century, Finland has nurtured some of the major creative talents of Western culture, from the composer Sibelius to architects Eliel & Eero Saarinen and Alvar Aalto.
The centre of Finnish commerce and culture, Helsinki is home to some 631,000 people. Much of the city's neoclassical architecture dates from the period of Tsarist rule, which began in 1809 after political control of Finland passed from Sweden to Russia, Finland gained its independence in 1917.

Like Latvia and Lithuania, the Baltic republic of Estonia has survived a turbulent history. The small nation was conquered and ruled by the likes of Teutonic Knights, Polish princes and Russian Tsars. For 51 years, Estonia remained a pawn in the Soviet empire, until the burgeoning freedom movement led to independence for the Baltic Republics in 1991. Like its sister republics, Estonia maintained its ties to the Western tradition, retaining the Latin alphabet and Catholic and Protestant faiths. Once a member of the historic Hanseatic League, Tallinn is the political, commercial and cultural centre of Estonia.

Iceland is a land of volcanoes and glaciers, lava fields and green pastures, boiling thermal springs and ice-cold rivers teeming with salmon. This unspoiled demi-paradise is also home to a very old and sophisticated culture. The northernmost capital in the world, Reykjavik was founded in 874 when Ingolfur Arnarson threw wood pillars into the sea, vowing to settle where the pillars washed ashore. Today, Iceland is an international centre of commerce and home to one of the most technologically sophisticated societies in the world.

For thousands of years, people have lived and worked along the shores of the Humber River Valley and the Bay of Islands.
The Port of Corner Brook has been welcoming cruise ships for more than 30 years. Nestled in the sheltered Bay of Islands, the 35-kilometre sail into Corner Brook is a favourite among cruise passengers, especially in the fall when the Blow Me Down Mountains are ablaze with vibrant autumn leaves. One of the more interesting cities on your itinerary, this was the transit port for all the wealth Spain derived from South America. The famous "Old Town" is filled with attractions, boutiques and restaurants. Throughout Colombia, the Spanish Empire's influence in the New World is self-evident. Its fortress walls, quaint narrow streets and balconied houses are all vivid reminders of Spain's hold on Cartagena, the Caribbean and South America.
This is the land of El Dorado and flamboyant adventurers in search of the ever-elusive gold. Cartagena's well-constructed fortifications defended its borders against seafaring pirates. Today, this modern city, seaport and commercial centre still boast much of its original colonial architecture.

Cruising through the Panama Canal will be one of the unforgettable experiences of your voyage as it takes approximately eight hours to navigate the 65-kilometre waterway. This links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, allowing you to experience one of the engineering marvels of the 20th century.
In 1880, Ferdinand de Lesseps and the French Canal Company (builders of the Suez Canal) began construction in Panama. Unfortunately, they were defeated by disease, staggering cost overruns and massive engineering problems. The French sold their claim and properties to the United States who then began construction in 1904, completing the project in 10 years at a cost of $375 million.

The monoliths of Easter Island have fascinated Westerners since Dutch seaman, Roggeven, made landfall here on Easter Sunday in 1722. The oldest of the Moai, as the great monoliths are called, dates back 800 to 1,000 years. The mystery of Easter Island's first settlers remains a mystery however the society of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) was thought to have possessed stone-working skills on a par with those found in the Inca Empire. Today, most anthropologists believe the island was settled as part of the great wave of Polynesian migration.
Please note:
• The current fee for entry into the National Park is US $80 per person, this fee is included in all optional pre-booked shore tours. Independent passengers are required to pay this fee on arrival at the park.
