Day 2 Taipei & Surroundings Day Tour

This morning depart Taipei and travel to the nearby Pingxi district where you will enjoy a quick ride along the Pingxi Branch Line - a 12.9km stretch of narrow-gauge railroad that runs alongside the Keelung River. Taking a ride on the Pingxi Line is like taking a step back in time and is one of the most popular day trips from Taiwan.

Step off the train in the town of Shifen, which is a popular town for launching sky lanterns. Sky lanterns are a Taiwanese tradition and Pingxi district is one of the only places where you are allowed to launch them. The paper lanterns inscribed with one's hopes for the coming year are launched into the sky and the preferred place to launch them is right on the tracks which makes for some great people watching. Here you will have the opportunity to launch a sky lantern (4 travellers to one sky lantern).

Afterwards, continue to the small mountainous village of Jiufen, made famous largely due to its similarity to the village in Spirited Away, arguably Hayao Miyazaki’s most popular movie. Here you will enjoy time at leisure to explore Jiufen and have lunch (not included). We suggest you explore the picturesque Old Street which is a narrow alleyway lined up with small food stalls, tea houses, souvenir shops, and pottery stores. The most picturesque tea house in Jiufen is A-MEI Teahouse. This multi-story teahouse is strategically located just a little off the main street, perched on top of a hill. From their balcony, you can admire the picturesque view in front of you, Keelung Mountain to the right and the Northern shores of Taiwan to the left.

You will then continue back to Taipei and enjoy a quick stop at a duty-free shop before continuing onwards to Taipei 101, which was the tallest building in the world from 2004 to 2010. Here you have time at leisure to explore the modern shopping centre and food court, or alternatively take a trip up to the observatory at the top of the tower (not included - additional cost).

Finish the day back at your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Overnight: Capital Hotel Songshan or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 Taipei Sightseeing - Hualien - Hualien Night Market

Today head for some more sightseeing in Taipei before continuing onwards towards Hualien City on the rugged and beautiful East Coast of Taiwan.

The first stop in Taipei will be the National Palace Museum which boasts the world's largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art and artefacts, dating back more than 7,000 years. You will then visit Longshan Temple, which is one of the most famous temples in Taiwan and continue, driving past the Presidential Building before arriving at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, a national monument and tourist attraction erected in memory of Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China.

Continue onwards to Hualien City (approx 170km) and enjoy a local lunch along the way. On arrival, check into your hotel where you may enjoy some time at leisure. Later this evening, take a short trip to the Hualien (Dongdamen) Night Market. Opening in 2015, the Hualien Night Market is the largest and most entertaining market on the East Coast of Taiwan. Also known as the Dongdamen Night Market, the sprawling wide-laned marketplace is a must-visit experience when spending an evening in Hualien. With over 400 vendors, the amount of food on offer is incredible. It isn’t just Taiwanese food either; you can find items from mainland China, America, Thailand, Japan and other numerous regions. Due to the enormous amount of food on offer and the variety you can sample, it is an easy place to get a unique, inexpensive dinner (not included).

Overnight: Park City Hualien or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Hualien - Taroko National Park - Shitiping - Taitung City

Today, head out for an exciting journey into Taiwan’s most famous National Park. Taroko National Park is a natural wonderland nestled in the heart of Taiwan. This enchanting destination offers a mesmerising fusion of awe-inspiring marble cliffs, verdant forests and meandering turquoise rivers. Here you will enjoy the opportunity to walk through winding trails that lead you through majestic gorges, ancient shrines and cascading waterfalls. You will also enjoy a chance to walk along the impressive suspension bridge, which is 196 metres long and 152 metres above the Liwu Valley.

Afterwards, enjoy a local lunch and then continue onwards to Shitiping on the coast, where you will find a huge, well-developed sea erosion terrace. The marine bench, raised coral reefs, sea ditches, and sea cliffs can be easily spotted, among which the pothole landscape is the best in Taiwan. Finish the day in Taitung City on the South East Coast of Taiwan, where you will check in for an evening at leisure.

Overnight: Traveler Inn Tiehua or similar

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch

Day 5 Taitung - Fangliao - Kaohsiung

This morning is free at leisure to relax or explore the nearby Taitung Forest Park, nicknamed ‘Black Forest’ by residents for its immense dark beefwood trees. E-bikes are available at an additional cost within the park for those who would like to explore the numerous trails by e-bike.

Later this morning, check out and head to the Taitung train station. Along the way, stop by the Sugar Factory Cultural and Creative Park, where visitors can explore local aboriginal handicrafts and experience the culture of the sugar industry.

Upon arrival at the train station, board the iconic ‘Breezy Blue’ train. Breezy Blue was refurbished in 2021 and is a train from the 1950s that glides along the southern coast of Taiwan, passing by many forgotten stations. The “romantic blue” train evokes nostalgic memories for the locals who commuted to work and school on the blue diesel-powered train in the past. Serious work and research were done to ensure that travellers can enjoy the most authentic train experience. Everything from the exterior colours of the train to the interior setup was refurbished to recreate the nostalgic train experience. One of the highlights of the train ride is the open windows as you can feel the breeze while the train chugs through the island along the beautiful south coast, taking in the beautiful ocean and mountain views the whole way.

The train stops at Fangliao Station, where you will be met and transferred to the nearby city of Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung is a massive port city in southern Taiwan. It's home to many skyscrapers, such as the 348m-tall Tuntex Sky Tower, and is known for its diversity of parks. Its focal point is the Love River, with walking paths and cafes along its banks and cruise boats navigating its waters. Shopping options range from high-end malls to the Liuhe and Ruifeng night markets.

Overnight: Guide Hotel Liuhe or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Kaohsiung Half-Day Tour

This morning, head out on a half-day sightseeing tour of Kaohsiung, where you will visit the Lotus Pond, Dragon and Tiger Pagodas and Qi Ming Tang temple.

Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. We suggest visiting the nearby Liuhe Night Market, which is one of the most popular night markets in all of Taiwan.

Overnight: Guide Hotel Liuhe or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Kaohsiung - Chiayi - Alishan - Chiayi

After breakfast, you will be departing Kaohsiung for the nearby city of Chiayi, where you will visit the Hinoki Village. Hinoki Village is a large-scale Japanese-style wooden historical building complex and one of the key attractions in Chiayi City. After years of restoration and planning, the 28 cypress houses carrying historical memories, some of which are used as cafes, toy museums, or various cultural and creative shops, have injected new life into the cladding of historic sites, allowing the old culture to be preserved and new stories to be built.

Afterwards, continue into the mountains to the famous Alishan National Scenic Area. Here you can explore the beautiful natural surroundings, including lush forests, ancient trees, and picturesque walking trails. On some days, the clouds are so dense and thick that the mountaintops appear like islands on the cloud ocean. Alishan is also famous for its high mountain Oolong tea, so on the way back to Chiayi, you will visit a local tea shop and enjoy a tea ceremony.

Finish the day back in Chiayi, where you will enjoy an evening at leisure.

Overnight: Orange Hotel or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Chiayi - Sun Moon Lake - Taipei

Today, you will travel to Sun Moon Lake, which is the largest natural lake in Taiwan. Here you will find a vista of rolling hills and mountains with the beautiful calm lake at the forefront. Enjoy lunch (not included) before heading out on a cruise on this beautiful mountain lake. Afterwards, visit Ci’en Pagoda, which is 46 metres tall, bringing its top to an even 1,000 metres above sea level. It has an imposing traditional Chinese style and is divided into nine stories. Here you can climb to the top, where they have a magnificent view of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Afterwards, continue onwards to Taipei, where you will visit a Pineapple cake shop. Pineapple Cakes are a traditional Taiwanese pastry that was developed to make use of the abundance of pineapples in the country and make a great souvenir to bring back home.

Finish the day back at your hotel in Taipei.

Nowhere is the tension between North and South Korea more palpable than in the no-man's-land known as the Korean Demilitarised Zone, or DMZ.

Located on each side of the 38th parallel, this infamous border was established at the end of the war in 1953 at the signing of Panmunjom’s armistice in order to separate North and South Korea.

This morning head north towards the North Korean border. Upon arrival at the DMZ take the Gondola to give a perfect bird's eye view of the Demilitarised Zone. Then enjoy a tour of Imjingak Resort. Imjingak Resort has various war-related artefacts as well as spacious Pyeonghwa Nuri Park. The resort preserves the Freedom Bridge and Imjingang rail bridge from the Korean War to remind people of the past, along with a Memorial Hall, memorial monuments, the Bell of Unification, Last Train Out, The Bridge of No Return, and Dokgae Bridge symbolises the pains of war and separation. The skywalk experience will be divided into three themes: past, present, and future.

Walking down the stairway, you will see the situation room of the command during wartime.Followed by a short introduction at the United Nations camp.

We finally visit Odusan Unification Observatory (Closed Every Mon. - will be replaced by Imjingak Peace Observatory).

After receiving a brief and listening to the precautions, you can watch a 3D film about the war, and then we can vividly see the North Korean villages, people working, and their daily lives.

Day 23 Seoul - Jeonju

Today we depart Seoul and we proceed to the most celebrated village of Jeonju, an important tourist centre that is famous for its Korean food and historic traditional buildings. This honour recognizes the city's traditional home cooking handed down through generations over thousands of years, its active public and private food research, its system for nurturing talented chefs, and its hosting of distinctive local food festivals.

Jeonju is the birthplace of Bibimbap (rice with vegetables & meat). In 2011, it was ranked 40th on the World's 50 most delicious foods readers' poll compiled by CNN Travel. We highly recommend you enjoy excellent Bibimbap food during your stay (not included).

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to get a DIY (do-it-yourself) experience to make Korean paper with wooden tools and bring it back home.

Afterwards, we will take a tour of Jeonju Hanok Village, the largest Korean Village with various traditional cultural facilities in the downtown area.

Finish the day at your centrally located hotel where you can enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Best Western Plus Jeonju or similar, Jeonju

Afterwards, we proceed to the Traditional Wine Museum. Here, visitors can see the tools and machines used in the making of alcohol, and get a closer look at the different types of traditional Korean wine. Some of the most interesting displays at the museum are the alcohol preparation room and the fermentation room, where visitors can hear the amplified sounds of the fermentation process through loudspeakers.

Afterwards, we will visit Jaman Mural Village. Situated on the hillside next to the Jeonju Hanok Village. Jaman Village used to be one of Jeonju’s poor hillside villages or shantytowns. Now, thanks to the murals drawn by the talented local artists, Jaman Village, or ‘Jaman Mural Village,’ has become one of the most popular attractions in Jeonju.

Finish the day at your centrally located hotel where you can enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Best Western Plus Jeonju or similar, Jeonju

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 25 Jeonju - Busan

This morning we depart early for Busan, the hub of Asia. Upon arrival, we will visit the Yongdusan Dragon Head Park – it is called Yongdusan because the shape of the mountain resembles a dragon’s head emerging from the sea. We will then go to the iconic Busan Tower, a 120m high tower that provides a stunning bird’s-eye view of the entire city of Busan, including islands and ships dotted in the distant seas. From there we will visit the Jagalchi Fish Market, the largest fish market in Korea and a popular “must-go” site for tourists in Busan.

Afterwards, we will visit Haedong Yonggungsa Temple which is situated on the coast of the north-eastern portion of Busan. This superb attraction offers visitors the rare find of a temple along the shoreline; most temples in Korea are located in the mountains.

Next, we will continue onwards to the Instagram famous Gamcheon Culture Village. The village is formed by houses built in staircase-fashion on the foothills of a coastal mountain, earning this village the nickname "Machu Picchu of Korea". Many alleys that cut through this community are vibrantly decorated with murals and sculptures created by the residents.

Finish the day at your hotel located in the heart of the city where you will check in and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Asti Hotel or similar, Busan

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 26 Full-Day Busan Sightseeing Tour

This morning, visit Huinnyeoul Culture Village, a charming coastal village located on the sloping cliff of Yeongdo in Busan. In December 2011, the old houses of the area were remodelled and the area was reborn as a unique culture and art village where you can walk through and visit the numerous cafes, galleries and enjoy the sweeping views of Busan and the ocean.

Afterwards, visit Songdo Beach and board the famous cable car to ride over the bay and enjoy views of the city and beach below through the transparent floor of the cable car.

Following the cable car, visit Sky Harbor Observatory Platform. This observatory offers the most beautiful views of the Songdo Sea and cable cars. Afterwards, return to Songdo Beach via the same cable car and take a short walk along the Songdo Cloud Walk. The skywalk features sections with a clear glass floor that creates the feeling of walking on top of the ocean. The amazing panoramic view of the surrounding area has made the Skywalk a popular destination. First opened in 2015, the 365-meter-long skywalk continues to attract tourists to Songdo Beach.

You will then visit the Nurimaru APEC House, which refers to an APEC conference hall. Nurimaru APEC House was built to host the 2005 APEC Summit meeting at the tip of Dongbaek Island (동백섬), which stands near Haeundae Beach. This eye-catching glassy building has been one of Busan’s symbolic places since then.

Finally, visit the UN Memorial Cemetery. Along the way, drive over Gwangandaegyo Bridge, which stretches over 7.4 kilometres and is the longest bi-level bridge over the ocean in Korea.

On the way back to the hotel you can visit Nampodong International Market. This is one of Korea’s largest markets, each alleyway is crowded with stalls and connects to Bupyeong Market, Kkangtong Market, and other smaller markets. The market stocks such a wide variety of goods, that you can find almost everything you need. Travellers who visit the market will need to make their own way back to the hotel (approximately 10-15 minute taxi).

Cruise

'Norwegian Spirit'

The 2,032-passenger Norwegian Spirit debuted in 1998 so you won't find a rock climbing wall, bowling alley or some of the other whizbang features offered by the line's bigger, newer ships, but enjoyment doesn't always have to come in a giant package.

Norwegian Spirit may be the line's oldest and smallest ship, but it's also one NCL -- and passengers -- clearly love: it enjoyed a massive $100m bow-to-stern refurbishment in 2020 that has it looking and feeling brand new.

The refit has given the ship an adult vibe with brand-new features such as the Thermal Suite; the Spice H2O area, which replaces the kids' area Splash Academy; new cabins and a new upscale Italian restaurant: Onda by Scarpetta.

Norwegian Spirit is no longer geared towards families, and would suit couples looking for longer and eclectic itineraries. Its smaller size and traditional features make it a good choice for cruise travellers who want to feel like they're onboard an oceangoing vessel rather than a huge theme park at sea.

FREE AT SEA INCLUSIONS

As part of this package, you will receive the below NCL ‘Free At Sea Inclusions’

• A complimentary non alcoholic & alcoholic drinks package for all passengers for the duration of your cruise

• At least 1 x complimentary Special Dining package to use at any specialty restaurant onboard your cruise

• 1 x 150-minute internet package per person onboard the cruise

• Receive a $50 USD shore excursion credit per cabin for every port visited during your cruise

• For a full summary of all inclusions along with all terms and conditions, please visit the NCL site here https://www.ncl.com/au/en/about/terms-and-conditions/promotions-aunz

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:

Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:

An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
