Day 1 Fly to Broome, Western Australia

Today, depart for Broome, your gateway to the untouched wilderness of Australia's Kimberley coastline - a myriad of beautiful bays, inlets, beaches, reefs, rivers and of course picture-perfect waterfalls.

Upon arrival, make your own way to your centrally located hotel and enjoy the rest of your day at leisure.

Overnight: Broome Time Resort (or similar)

Meals included: None

Day 2 The Mitchell Plateau Scenic Flight & Cruise Embarkation

This morning you will be picked up by an Aviair shuttle from your accommodation and taken to the airport  for a scenic plane flight from Broome to the Mitchell Plateau. This is followed by a helicopter flight of the Mitchell Plateau and the spectacular Mitchell Falls. The helicopter will land at Naturalist Beach where the crew will transfer you via tender to the 'Discovery One' catamaran.

You will be welcomed on board, invited to settle in, get acquainted with the boat and relax as you take in the beauty of the Kimberley. After everyone has settled, you will cruise to one of your overnight anchorages.

'Discovery One' is really all about getting off the main boat, jumping into a tender and exploring the Kimberley. Enjoy 2 to 3 included excursions per day to several quiet, lesser-known spots away from the main boats, and you'll feel like you're the only people on earth.

Please note: To experience locations at their best when light, wind and tides are most favourable, days 2 - 13 of this itinerary is a guide only and the order of destinations may vary.
This itinerary lists all the places you can reasonably expect to visit on your cruise between Naturalist Beach and Derby. It is likely, however, that there will be additional places of interest visited on the actual cruise, time and tides allowing.

'Discovery One' travels during the day so you don't miss any scenery and to ensure a restful night's sleep.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Dinner

Day 3 York Sound & the Hunter River

Prince Frederick Harbour lies within York Sound. It is here that we find the Roe and Hunter River estuaries. This area boasts sensational scenery, with cathedral-like gorges and eroded sandstone features such as the Indian Head at the entrance to the Hunter River.

Depending on tides and conditions you may visit Naturalist Island or the Hunter River.

Porosus Creek is a majestic creek feeding off the Hunter River. The wildlife here is abundant, including Saltdog, a curious croc who always swims over to say hello, and a magnificent pair of Bronze whale sharks. A scenic boat ride up this creek is a must to spot birds, crocs and to take in the incredible scenery. You might unveil a shore lined with lush mangroves and rainforest and a backdrop of impressive red cliffs.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 4 Anderdon Islands

Black Lip Beach, named after the large black lipped oysters that frequent this island, is one of your stops in the Anderdon Islands. It also has a wonderful cave on the beach accessed on low tide. Witness stunning rainforest and scenery and spot crocodiles as you cruise through the region.

You might visit the Wandjina art site on the beach on Wandjina Island, a good place for a refreshing dip, if tides and conditions are right. See the spectacular Thor’s Hammer rock formation and the lovely surrounding scenery.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 5 Careening Bay

Careening Bay is within the southern part of Nelson Bay where, in 1820, Phillip Parker King careened the vessel HMC 'Mermaid' for repairs whilst surveying the Australian coastline. His carpenter carved the vessel's name into an ancient Boab tree which is still visible today 200 years on! Take the opportunity to ashore and see the majestic boab tree for yourself.

Continue to Rothsay Water - a beautiful body of water just before the entrance to St George Basin. This is a very scenic waterway that leads you to a brilliant site where you can observe both Wandjina and Gwion Gwion art.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 6 St George Basin & the Prince Regent River

Within the St George Basin are two flat topped hills, Mt Trafalgar and Mt Waterloo, which provide a spectacular backdrop as you cruise to the mouth of the Prince Regent River. This river is the eroded remains of the longest single straight lineament in Australia, making it yet another geological wonder.

Get your camera ready as you experience some spectacular scenery, flora and fauna on our journey down this remote and pristine waterway, concluding at the majestic King Cascade Falls. Keep an eye out for crocodiles as you view these magnificent falls which cascade over fern covered tiers in breathtaking splendour.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 7 Hanover Bay & Camden Harbour

Within Hanover Bay are the pristine sands of Hanover Beach. It is here, in 1838, that Lt George Grey unloaded his Timor ponies and began the first land based expedition of North West Australia in search of the great inland sea. The journey soon ended after experiencing boat wrecks, near drowning and Grey himself being speared in the hip. Despite this, Lt Grey reported back positively describing the area as ‘lush and fertile’. This glowing report encouraged a group of optimistic farmers to establish a new settlement in Camden Harbour in 1864. This was a total disaster from the start. The ruins of that settlement, which lasted only 9 months, can still be seen and the graves of some of these tough pioneers can be found on nearby Sheep Island.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 8 Bumpus Island & Wailgwin

Bumpus Island is a birds' paradise where you can see turns and brown boobies in abundance.

Explore Wailgwin Island’s wonderful rock formations, spot turtle nests by the beach and enjoy a swim if the conditions permit.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Sampson Inlet

Further north is Sampson Inlet which leads into a monsoonal rainforest pocket with almost permanent freshwater.

Many previous passengers have called this the most beautiful spot on the Kimberley Coast. Keen photographers should remember their cameras!

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 10 Montgomery Reef

North West of Raft Point is Montgomery Reef. This 400 square kilometre reef can emerge up to 4 metres above the waterline at low tide, creating a visual spectacle of waterfalls and sea life. Several small islands dot the reef and support rich mangroves, crocodiles, turtles, birds and fish.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 11 Talbot Bay & the Horizontal Falls

Talbot Bay is home to the famous Horizontal Falls. The region's massive tides create a spectacular scene, sending huge volumes of water rushing through two narrow chasms in the land formation when the tides reach peak flow in both rising and falling conditions.

With up to 10m of height difference between the waters of each of the two inland bays and the sea, the water gushes through creating whirlpools, boils and raging currents. In Cyclone Creek, the incredible marine life includes impressive Tawny Nurse sharks which often come to greet 'Discovery One'.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 12 Silica Beach

Cruise past Cockatoo and Koolan islands and learn about the history of these mine sites.

Enjoy a scenic trip up the beautiful Silver Gull Creek and see the old squat built by a couple of infamous yachties.

Near the entrance to King Sound lies Silica Beach which boasts pure white sands and clear blue water. It’s the kind of beach one imagines you should find on an island paradise. If the crew think it’s safe, enjoy a dip in the shallows or just take a walk on this fabulous beach.

Overnight: ‘Discovery One’ Kimberley Catamaran

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 13 Edeline Island & Strickland Bay

Cruise

‘Discovery One’ - Kimberley Catamaran

Experience Western Australia and the Kimberley region like never before. With Discovery One, you’ll journey to hidden coastal gems and inland waterways that you didn’t even know existed.

'Discovery One' is a 25-metre catamaran that will take you on the adventure of a lifetime along the Kimberley coast. For a cruise ship, it’s small but offers an intimate atmosphere by travelling with a small group. The twin-hulled vessel is stable with a shallow draft meaning it can go further up inland waterways and closer to shore than the larger ships.

With a passionate and experienced crew, your every need will be taken care of on all of our Kimberley boat cruises. Discover the Kimberley’s untouched beauty on a Kimberley cruise that embodies heritage, comfort, and a love for exploration.

'Discovery One' is really all about getting off the main boat, jumping into a tender and exploring the Kimberley. You'll go on 2 to 3 included excursions per day. You'll be completely immersed in all things Kimberley and the Captain will take you to several quiet, lesser-known spots away from the main boats. You'll feel like you're the only people on earth.

When not out and about in the tenders, Discovery One has loads of deck space, including the top deck which offers 360-degree views. There is a shade sail so you can get out of the direct sun. The dining area on the second deck offers air conditioning and comfortable seating with large windows to view the passing scenery. There is also a spa to relax in at the end of the day.

Lounge and Crocodile Bar:

A range of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, including soft drinks and freshly ground coffee, are available onboard ‘Discovery One’ from the Crocodile Bar in the air conditioned lounge. There is a selection of beer wine and spirits with most wines sourced locally from the Margaret River region.

The Top Deck:

The top deck of 'Discovery One' is entirely for the passenger’s enjoyment and gives you 360° views of the coast, islands and gorges. There are tables, chairs, sun lounges and a spa where you can relax once the boat has anchored for the evening. It’s the perfect spot for a sunset drink.

Dining:

At the rear of the lounge is the outdoor dining deck and barbecue area. Breakfast is continental style, with cereal, milk, fruit, yoghurt, toast and a variety of spreads. Coffee, tea, water and fresh fruits are available in the lounge throughout the day for you to enjoy whenever you wish.

Lunch and dinner are buffet style with several dishes to choose from which cater to various tastes. The onboard cook makes sure there are plenty of fresh salads and vegetables at each of these meals.

Morning tea is also supplied with something delicious and freshly baked from the galley and ‘nibbles’ are provided for you to enjoy with your pre-dinner drinks.

If you have specific medically required dietary needs or food allergies, please enter this information in your passenger information form (PIF). The cook will cater to these requirements.

Please note that diets that are based on a personal preference may not always be able to be catered for. The meals are varied, nutritious and appetising so you should have no problem selecting foods that suit your requirements.

Entertainment:

Books on the local history, flora and fauna are available to read. Please make sure you return these once you have finished with them. There is also a selection of novels, board games and playing cards to keep you entertained. We suggest you bring some reading material of your own or crossword puzzles, knitting, etc, for any quiet times. There is a DVD of the Kimberley which the crew will play in the lounge, as well as maps of the coastline which you can view.

Onboard Account:

A “boat account” will be kept for the duration of your cruise. All purchases from the bar will be kept on this account, as well as any souvenirs you might choose to purchase. You will be required to finalise your boat account before disembarking. Please settle your account using Visa or Mastercard. There is no credit card surcharge for your boat account transaction. Cash payments can not be accepted for the boat account.

Mobile Phone and Internet Reception:

Mobile phone and internet reception is not available on the cruise. 'Discovery One' has a satellite phone on board for emergencies only. Anyone who needs to urgently contact the ship can call 'Discovery One' directly on 0011 870 773 506 802. Please note that these calls are billed to the caller at approximately $20 per minute.

Smoking Policy:

All interior areas of 'Discovery One' are strictly non-smoking. A smoking area is designated at the rear of the top deck where environmental care and respect is essential. An ashtray is provided for your convenience.

Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

For travellers entering from outside Australia, and who do not have Australian citizenship or residency, a visa may be required.

Important:

• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.

• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.

Please note:

• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.

• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected. Supplier Fees

In the event the tour package you have purchased is unable to proceed, and/or a travel Supplier is unable to fulfil the tour due to external circumstances (Limitation of Liability e.g. a Force Majeure event), there may be a fee or amount of money that is withheld by our Suppliers and is unrecoverable. This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. If refunds are not available from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. In the event we are unable to obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee.
