Day 13 Cape Town Free Day

Enjoy a free day at leisure to experience the vibrant city of Cape Town. Alternatively, you can take part in an optional activity (not included).

Optional Activity: Cape Town Half Day City Tour: $110 per person
Situated below Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head, Cape Town offers a rich cultural and industrial heritage, grand splendour and an assurance of activity & excitement. This optional tour is a geographical and cultural extravaganza, showing you Cape Town, from its historical beginnings to the dazzling, modern city it is today. The tour commences with a visit to Table Mountain (weather permitting; cable car fee not included). Enjoy panoramic views over the Mother City and Robben Island in the distance lying sleepily in Table Bay harbour. In the heart of the city enjoy a short walk through the Company Gardens. From squirrels to a variety of plant life, it’s just a happy place to soak up some ‘Cape Town vibes’ and enjoy the aviaries and fishponds.

On the Wale Street end of the garden you will find a monument which was created to commemorate the life and work of Desmond Tutu – lovingly referred to by South Africans as “The Arch” and a tribute to the values of the South African Constitution. Arch for Arch was installed beside historic St. Georges Cathedral aka “People’s Cathedral” for its role in the resistance against apartheid. Step inside the Slave Lodge which explores the history of these unwilling immigrants and how they have contributed to the richness and diversity of South African history. As you drive through the city you shall get a feel for the cultural melting pot that it is. End the tour with a stop at Truth Café, a ‘steampunk inspired’ artisan coffee shop serving all hand-roasted coffees in a vintage cast-iron drum (any meals for own account). Return to your hotel upon completion of the tour where you may enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Cape Milner Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

In Simon’s Town you will stop for the chance to see penguins and enjoy some lunch (not included). On the way back you will also visit the beautiful Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Note: The drive via Chapman's Peak is subject to the road being open. Ou Kaapse Weg (mountain pass in Cape Town) will be used as an alternative route when necessary.

Overnight: Cape Milner Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

Day 15 Cape Town Free Day

Take this day at your own leisure with the opportunity to explore all that Cape Town has to offer or choose to embark on an optional excursion.

Optional Activity: Full Day Cape Winelands Tour - $160 per person
This morning after breakfast depart on a full day Cape Winelands Tour. This delightful drive winds its way to the heart of the Cape Winelands, through superb mountain ranges, vineyards and Cape Dutch homesteads. Head to the heart of South Africa’s wine industry, Stellenbosch. Beautiful and culturally rich, the region is steeped in South African history. Walk down the canal-lined avenues, in the shade of giant oak trees and beautifully preserved historic buildings. Enjoy the first wine tasting of the day at the Waterford Estate or similar.

Travel over the Helshoogte Pass to the town of Franschhoek, historically dating back to the 17th century when the French Huguenots arrived. Billed as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa, this charming town in a most picturesque valley retains a French Huguenot style. Enjoy a wine tasting before enjoying the fabled culinary skills of the Franschhoek chefs at one of the many award winning restaurants (lunch is not included). Onward to Paarl, one of the Cape’s first farming districts. The town is set at the foot of the cluster of remarkable granite domes from which it takes its name. The last stop for the day is at a wine estate on the Paarl wine route. Return to the bustle of city life after an enthralling day in the countryside, arriving back at the hotel early evening.

This morning transfer to the nearby town of Stellenbosch where you will spend the next two nights in your quality guesthouse accommodation. Check in will be available from 14:00 onwards and luggage storage will be available until check-in. The remainder of the day is free at leisure.

Stellenbosch is a university town in South Africa's Western Cape province. It's surrounded by the vineyards of the Cape Winelands and the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg. The town's oak-shaded streets are lined with cafes, boutiques and art galleries. Cape Dutch architecture gives a sense of South Africa's Dutch colonial history, as do the Village Museum's period houses and gardens.

If there's one thing that Stellenbosch is renowned for, it’s wine. There are hundreds of estates scattered around the outskirts of the town, many of which produce world-class wines.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Johannesburg Area:
Johannesburg is situated on the highveld plateau, and has a subtropical highland climate. The city enjoys a sunny climate, with the summer months (October to April) characterised by hot days followed by afternoon thundershowers and cool evenings, and the winter months (May to September) by dry, sunny days followed by cold nights. Temperatures in Johannesburg are usually fairly mild due to the city's high elevation, with an average maximum daytime temperature in January of 25.6°C, dropping to an average maximum of around 16°C in June. The UV index for Johannesburg in summers is extreme, often reaching 14-16 due to the high elevation and proximity to the equator.

Cape Town:
Cape Town has a Mediterranean-style climate: wet and cool winters, dry and warm summers. The annual average temperature in Cape Town is a delightful 17°C. Cape Town lies on the 34th latitude South, together with Casablanca, Los Angeles and Sydney.

Victoria Falls:
In the area of Victoria Falls, the climate is sub-tropical, with a mild and dry winter from mid-May to mid-August (during which, however, nights are cold), and a hot, muggy and rainy summer from mid-November to mid-March. The rains occur in the form of downpours or thunderstorms. Between September and November, before the rainy season, there is a hot period, which is in fact the hottest of the year, with temperatures easily reaching 35°C, and sometimes up to 40°C, even though the humidity is not as high as in summer. October is the hottest month of the year. On the contrary, in winter, when during the day the weather is nice, the temperature at night may approach freezing (0°C).
Please note: The amount of water at Victoria Falls (waterfall) will depend on the seasonality.
