24 Stockholm Hours

So hip right now. Stockholm is impossibly cool. Like the brotherhood of Hemsworths – pretty, effortless and perfectly formed. Here’s how we’d spend 24 hours in the City of Islands.

Breakfast & Fika
Get your caffeine hit here at Under Kastanjen in Gamla Stan, the Old Town and medieval heart of the city. It’s pedestrian-friendly with narrow, cobblestone streets and buildings in various golden hues. Under Kastanjen means ‘under the Chestnut tree and is a great place to fika– meaning to have coffee and a snack in Swedish.

Balls of Steel
Stockholm in summer? Boulebar Ralambshov is the place to hang, play some petanque, or get plonked. Show the locals that they are no match for an Aussie’s ball handling skills.

Ostermalm Food Hall
Lunch in this food hall formed in the 1880s, doesn’t even need food to be amazing. Ornate family-run stores with shelves packed of fine foods and produce, Swedish delicacies and humanskost, it’s a visual feast in itself. Enjoy the lively atmosphere as you down fresh oysters, Gravlax, räksmörgås(prawn sandwich) or inlagd sill(pickled herring).

Happy Shoppers
In Stockholm on a weekend, then Hornstulls marknad in Södermalm is a must! An open-air waterside flea market organised by the Glad City Association who work to make for a happier city for locals and visitors alike. There’s food, antiques, art, design and vintage wares perfect for souvenir shopping.

Dinner
A trip to Sweden wouldn’t be complete without a Swedish meatball experience, and Meatballs for the People has all your types covered – beef, salmon and even elk. Vegetarians are catered for, and the gluten-averse needn’t run and hide. Skip the Systembolaget and wash it all down with an in-house bevvy.
