Overview

Africa opens up its arms to welcome you with its natural beauty for an adventure of a lifetime. Enjoy 14 days on a small-group tour, travelling from South Africa to the red and gold sand dunes of Namibia, onto one of the world’s largest cascades at Victoria Falls and then a treasure trove of wildlife in Botswana.

Say hello to Africa when you land in Johannesburg, then fly to Namibia’s capital city, Windhoek. First, see the Namib Tsaris Conservancy, nestled between the Nubib and Zaris Mountains, near the Great Namib Sand Sea and the Sossusvlei. Then, visit Namib Naukluft National Park for a scenic drive to the heart of the oldest desert in the world, the Namibian desert. Although mostly inaccessible to humans, you can see two of its most popular wonders: Sossusvlei and Sesriem. Sossusvlei is a salt-clay pan surrounded by dunes. In this eerie but striking landscape, see dead trees reach up to the sky from off-white soil, surrounded by intensely red dunes. This is an Insta-famous moment and a memory to cherish. At Sesriem Canyon, the Tsauchab River dug an approximately 1-Km-long and 30-metre-deep canyon into the ground that can be walked through. Travel to Swakopmund, a coastal resort nestled between the desert and the sea, featuring charming pockets of German colonial architecture. Here, board a catamaran boat cruise and sail Walvis Bay Lagoon to experience the harbour town from the water, popular for vast colonies of flamingos and other birdlife. Head back to Windhoek before continuing to Zimbabwe.

Accompanied through the rainforest by qualified guides, come to Victoria Falls, one of the largest cascades in the world. Receive a brief history of the falls, as well as details about the amazing flora, fauna and birdlife that inhabits this place. Later, visit Wild Horizons Elephant Sanctuary and Orphanage for an elephant encounter. Here you can observe some of Africa’s largest personalities in a pristine wilderness environment brimming with natural beauty. Afterward, venture into the bush to spend time with the elephants up-close, accompanied by the animals’ keepers.

Next stop is Chobe National Park in Botswana, located inland from the iconic Okavango Delta. Early morning and afternoon safari drives will allow you to search for the Big 5 including lions, rhinos, leopards, buffaloes and more. Brimming with wildlife, Chobe game drives are conducted in comfortable, open 4x4 vehicles, accompanied by professional English-speaking field rangers and trackers for an informative and detailed safari experience.

This amazing African experience package includes return international flights, 2 one-way international flights, 9 nights in 3 & 4-star accommodation plus 2 nights in a High-End Tented Camp, up to 5 game drives at Chobe National Park, 27 meals including daily breakfast and much more.

Day 3 Johannesburg - Windhoek, Namibia - Namib Tsaris Conservancy

Today, make your own way on the short walk across from the hotel to Johannesburg International Airport for your early morning flight to Windhoek, Namibia.

Upon arrival at Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport, a guide will provide a warm welcome. From there, depart southwest through the scenic Khomas Hochland highlands, descending the Great Escarpment into the vast Namib Desert. Along the way, enjoy a picturesque picnic lunch before continuing to Camp Sossus, arriving by midafternoon (approximately 350 kilometres). This afternoon you will have an option to explore the surrounding area on foot with a guide, concluding the day with sundowners while overlooking the expansive desert plains.

Namib Tsaris Conservancy is nestled between the Nubib and Zaris Mountains, near the Great Namib Sand Sea and the iconic Sossusvlei Dunes. The Namib Tsaris Conservancy was established in 2010 by landscape conservationist Swen Bachran. Serving as a natural buffer against harsh desert conditions, the Conservancy provides a vital refuge for wildlife during the dry season. Years of dedicated efforts to reverse decades of unsustainable farming have led to the removal of 89 kilometres of internal fencing, the installation of wildlife watering points, and the rehabilitation of land. This has transformed the Conservancy into one of the most scenic and ecologically sound areas, home to wildlife such as oryx, springbok, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, giraffe, klipspringer and predators like leopard, cheetah and spotted hyena. Ongoing plans include acquiring adjoining land and further reducing fences to neighboring conservation areas, allowing wildlife to thrive across this beautiful landscape.

Overnight: Camp Sossus or similar, Namib Tsaris Conservancy

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 4 Namib Tsaris Conservancy - Namib Naukluft National Park

The morning begins with an early rise for a magical excursion into Namib Naukluft National Park (approximately 270km). Enter the park gates at sunrise to capture the dunes as soft light and shadows accentuate their towering shapes and curves. The area boasts some of the highest free-standing sand dunes in the world. The guide will provide insight into the formation of the Namib Desert and its fascinating array of creatures and plants that have adapted to survive in such harsh environments.

Sossusvlei is a clay pan surrounded by towering star dunes that rise as high as a 70-story skyscraper, ranking among the tallest dunes on Earth. The pan, a stark white against the red sands, marks the endpoint of the usually dry Tsauchab River in the interior of the Great Sand Sea. The river originates south of the Naukluft Mountains in the Great Escarpment and stretches about 55 km into the sand sea before petering out. About 60,000 years ago, the Tsauchab River reached the Atlantic Ocean until shifting dunes blocked its path. Sand-locked pans west of Sossusvlei were once the river's endpoints. The nearby dunes, some reaching 220-metre in height, appear even taller when resting on an elevated surface like a river terrace. One of the dunes beside the Tsauchab rises 325-metre above the valley floor. Occasionally, heavy rainfall in the escarpment leads to flooding, filling the pan and reflecting the surrounding dunes and gnarled trees in the water. Sossusvlei is the largest of four pans in the area. Dead Vlei, one of these pans, is home to ancient camelthorn trees that have stood dead for about 900 years since the sand sea blocked the occasional floods.

After exploring the dune fields, enjoy a relaxed picnic breakfast in the shade of a camel thorn tree. Return to Camp Sossus in the early afternoon for a late lunch (approximately 110km), with a stop at Sesriem Canyon along the way. Sesriem Canyon formed over centuries of erosion by the Tsauchab River, carving a narrow gorge 1.5 kilometres long and 30 meters deep into the surrounding conglomerates. The canyon's cool, shaded depths allow pools of water to collect during the rainy season, remaining throughout much of the year. Early settlers relied on these pools for water, using six lengths of rawhide thongs (riems) tied together to draw water, which gave the canyon and its surrounding area the name Sesriem.

The rest of the afternoon is at leisure, offering a welcome break after an exhilarating morning in the dunes.

Overnight: Camp Sossus or similar, Namib Tsaris Conservancy

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 5 Swakopmund

Today’s fascinating drive heads northwest through the ever-changing desert landscapes of Namib Naukluft National Park, including the impressive Gaub and Kuiseb canyons. The route meets the coast at the port town of Walvis Bay, then continues north to Swakopmund, where the pleasant seaside location and cooler coastal air can be enjoyed (approximately 405km). Depending on the time of arrival, there may be time to explore the town of Swakopmund on foot before heading to dinner at a popular local restaurant with the guide.

Swakopmund resembles a small, German coastal resort, nestled between the desert and the sea. The town features a charming blend of German colonial architecture, along with good hotels, shops, restaurants, museums, craft centers, galleries, and cafes. Swakopmund began as a landing station in 1892 when the Imperial Navy erected beacons at the site. Settlers followed, attempting to create a harbor town with the construction of a concrete Mole and later an iron jetty, both of which failed. The advent of World War I halted development, and the town fell into decline until infrastructure improvements and the opening of an asphalt road between Windhoek and Swakopmund helped it prosper once again. Swakopmund has since become Namibia’s premier resort town. Though the sea is typically too cold for swimming, the beaches are pleasant, and the cooler climate provides a refreshing contrast after time spent in the desert.

Overnight: The Delight Swakopmund Gondwana Collection or similar, Swakopmund

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 6 Swakopmund - Walvis Bay Lagoon

This morning, the journey leads to the Walvis Bay lagoon to experience the harbour town from the waters aboard a catamaran boat cruise.

Glide silently and effortlessly past the massive ships docked in the harbor, keeping an eye out for playful seals and the possibility of dolphins riding the waves. Cape fur seals, Heaviside and bottlenose dolphins, pelicans, flamingos and a variety of sea birds might be seen swimming in that area. With a bit of luck, there’s also the chance of spotting whales, leatherback turtles, or sunfish. Snacks will be served during the excursion, along with local sparkling wine and fresh oysters, before returning to the jetty around midday.

Afterward, there’s an opportunity to explore the Walvis Bay waterfront area further before heading back to Swakopmund for a leisurely afternoon or to continue exploring the town.

Overnight: The Delight Swakopmund Gondwana Collection or similar, Swakopmund

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 7 Swakopmund - Windhoek

After a leisurely breakfast, the journey back to Windhoek begins (Approximately a 360-kilometre travel day). The road heads north through Namibia’s commercial farmlands, eventually reaching Windhoek and returning to Galton House for the final night in Namibia. Dinner this evening can be enjoyed at one of the popular restaurants in town, accompanied by the guide.

Overnight: Galton House or similar, Windhoek

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Upon arrival in Victoria Falls, be met by a tour representative and transferred to the hotel. Check-in is available from 14:00, with the remainder of the day at leisure.

Victoria Falls Town, located in Zimbabwe near the famous waterfall, is a vibrant and charming hub that serves as the gateway to one of the world’s greatest natural attractions. The elephant encounter offers an unobtrusive opportunity to observe some of Africa’s largest personalities in a pristine wilderness environment brimming with natural beauty. An open-design thatch Boma provides uninterrupted views of the beautiful Masuwe River. Against this breathtaking backdrop, an insightful and educational presentation will be given on the Wild Horizons Elephant Sanctuary and Orphanage. Founded on the principle of conservation, the sanctuary aims to inspire environmental responsibility by highlighting what stands to be lost.

There will be an opportunity to speak with guides who have traveled great distances, both physically and metaphorically, alongside these elephants. The presentation will delve into the complexities of individual elephants and their herd structures, sharing the history of these majestic animals and how they came under the sanctuary's care, along with the threats facing elephant populations today.

Afterward, venture into the bush to spend time with the elephants. The close-up experience with these gentle giants will leave a lasting impression. Observe the special bond between the elephant keepers and the animals, becoming part of the experience. There will be opportunities to take photographs, marvel at the elephants' size, and watch them interacting naturally, browsing and socializing with one another.

Zimbabwe
In the area of Victoria Falls, the climate is subtropical, with a mild and dry winter from mid-May to mid-August (during which, however, nights are cold), and a hot, muggy and rainy summer from mid-November to mid-March. The rains occur in the form of downpours or thunderstorms. Between September and November, before the rainy season, there is a hot period, which is in fact the hottest of the year, with temperatures easily reaching 35°C, and sometimes up to 40°C, even though the humidity is not as high as in summer. October is the hottest month of the year. On the contrary, in winter, when during the day the weather is nice, the temperature at night may approach freezing (0°C).
Please note: The amount of water at Victoria Falls (waterfall) will depend on the seasonality.

Botswana
Temperatures in Botswana differ throughout the year. In the summer months the climate is warm to hot (November to March) the maximum temperature can reach 30ºC with lows of 14ºC. In the winter months (June to September) the temperature can range from highs of 12ºC to lows of 2ºC, ensuring you bring warmer clothing, particularly in the evening for winter months.
