Cruise along the east coast of the Iwate Prefecture to Miyako, previously Japan’s main seaport for hundreds of years. The city's highlights revolve around natural attractions such as Sanriku Fukkō National Park. Stretching some 180 kilometres along the coast, the park showcases amazing flora - including Japanese red pine and a virgin forest of Tabu trees - while a variety of seabirds find refuge along its cliffs and beaches. Bird enthusiasts also flock to nearby Sanganjima island, one of Japan’s main nesting grounds for Swinhoe's storm petrels.

Spend the day relaxing on Jodogahama Beach, ranking among Japan’s best, or head to Morioka, Iwate’s largest city, to visit the 17th-century Hachimangu Shrine and sample rice wine on an optional tour of Asabiraki Sake Brewery dating from 1871 (additional charges may apply). Or head north of the city to Ryusendo Cave, a massive subterranean network of towering stalagmites and translucent lakes.

Hakodate is an important port on Japan’s northern Hokkaido Island and was the first to be opened to European and American trade. The result of this is a trove of Western-style buildings in the suburb of Motomachi giving the impression of a movie set. Listen out for the bell of the distinctive Haristo Greek Orthodox church, designated one of Japan’s official treasured “100 soundscapes.” You might like to get a panoramic view from the observation platform atop the Goryokaku Tower. Goryokaku is a 150-year old fortress that holds the Magistrate’s Office, an excellent example of traditional Japanese architecture.

Hokkaido is also famous for its hot springs, much beloved by the Japanese. Yunokawa Hot Spring enjoys a commanding view of the sea, and its botanical garden is home to the Japanese macaques called “snow monkeys” because of their habit of soaking in the hot springs during the northern winter.

Scenic Lake Akan, located approximately 80 kilometres from Kushiro, is ringed by hot springs. The Japanese Crane Reserve is a good place to see breeding populations of these large and graceful birds, so respected by the Japanese. Designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, Glacier Bay is also a National Monument, a National Park and a designated Biosphere Reserve. When first surveyed in 1794 by a team under the command of British captain George Vancouver on HMS Discovery, its vast glaciers extended well beyond present-day margins of the bay. Temperate, coniferous rainforest dominates its southern shores. Black and brown bears, wolves, moose, eagles and ravens all go about their daily routines, while harbour seals and whales frolic within the bay waters.

Glacier Bay has two major arms, East and West, and over fifty named glaciers, some of which push forward at three to six feet per day. Combined with Wrangell St. Elias National Park and Canada’s Kluane National Park and Alsek-Tatshenshini Park, Glacier Bay encompasses the largest protected wilderness area on earth. This is truly a place of awe-inspiring beauty and an icon of wild Alaska.

As the oldest city in Alaska, only accessible by air and sea, Sitka is the perfect place to relish in the unbridled beauty of the Last Frontier. Nicknamed the 'Paris of the Pacific' for the growing wealth acquired during its logging, gold, and fur trade booms, Sitka was sold to the United States by Russia in 1867.

Seek out the picturesque remnants of Russia’s architectural influence are still present. One of the most intriguing structures is the Cathedral of Saint Michael, built in 1848 to honour a Russian Orthodox bishop. Or take time to discover a mix of Tlingit tradition also runs heavily through Sitka’s streets, making for a unique blend of history and culture. One visit to Sitka is never enough because of the infinite ways to connect with its culture, wildlife, and people.

Decision Passage is the western end of Sumner Strait. Sumner Strait runs for about 110 kilometres east-and-west through the Alexander Archipelago in southeast Alaska, from the mouth of the Stikine River, north of the community of Wrangell, to Iphigenia Bay. The islands of Mitkof, Kupreanof and Kuiu are on the north side of the strait, and Zarembo and Prince of Wales Islands are on the south.

The first European to navigate the strait was a fur trapper named William Brown, in 1793. That same year, James Johnstone surveyed the strait as a part of George Vancouver’s expedition. It was named in 1875 for the abolitionist Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner. The strait passes between picturesque snow-capped peaks, and there is a 1932 lighthouse located at Cape Decision which is still a functioning signal.

Ketchikan

Ketchikan is a picturesque coastal town with a colourful frontier history, standing at the southern entrance to Alaska's famed Inside Passage.

The town’s site first served as a camp for Tlingit people, and for thousands of years this has been their home. Their rich culture is being preserved to this day. A visit to Ketchikan is not complete without visiting one or all of Native American sites such as Totem Bight State Park, Potlatch Park, Saxman Native Village and the Totem Heritage Center. Together, these locations comprise the world's largest collection of standing Native American totem poles (additional charges may apply).

In recent times, Ketchikan became a a salmon cannery, built by company employee Mike Martin in 1885 at the mouth of Ketchikan Creek. Once dubbed the 'Canned Salmon Capital of the World,’ today government, commercial fishing, and tourism are its main industries. Look for renowned Creek Street, perched on stilts along the mouth of the creek, it was infamous during gold rush days for its red-light district.

The Seymour Narrows is a 5 kilometre stretch of the Discovery Channel, north of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, that is notorious for the strength of the tidal currents flowing through it. The average width of the narrows is just 750 metres. During extreme tides, the current through the narrows is subject to severe Venturi effect, resulting in an increased velocity that can reach 15 knots. The navigation of Seymour Narrows is dependent on tidal and other conditions, that requires skill and technical accomplishment.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide: 
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group. 

Tour Leader: 
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

In Japan, April marks the arrival of spring, bringing mild and pleasant weather. Average temperatures typically range from 10°C to 20°C depending on the region. In major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, daytime highs are usually around 15°C to 20°C , while nighttime temperatures can drop to around 10°C . Northern regions like Hokkaido are cooler, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C . April is also famous for cherry blossoms, making it a popular time for outdoor activities and hanami (flower viewing) celebrations.

Alaska, USA  
In Alaska, May brings milder and more pleasant weather as spring transitions into early summer, with average temperatures typically ranging from 5°C to 15°C , depending on the region. In Anchorage, daytime highs usually range from 12°C to 16°C, with nighttime lows around 2°C to 6°C . Juneau experiences temperatures from about 8°C to 14°C during the day and around 3°C to 7°C at night. Fairbanks is typically warmer, with daytime highs of 13°C to 19°C and nighttime lows of 1°C to 6°C. May is also relatively dry, and the increased daylight hours make it an excellent time for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

Vancouver, Canada

Rainfall decreases compared to the winter months, though occasional showers are still common. Hong Kong, China 
In Hong Kong, May brings warm and humid weather as the city transitions into summer. Average temperatures typically range from 24°C to 29°C . Daytime highs often reach around 29°C , while nighttime lows usually stay around 24°C . May also marks the beginning of the rainy season, so you can expect frequent showers and high humidity. Despite the rain, the warm temperatures make it a lively time to explore the city's attractions and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 45 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

Luggage:
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

Australian passport holders are visa exempt for a stay of up to 90 days. The traveller must hold a passport valid at least 6 months on entry with two blank visa pages.

United States 
If travelling on an Australian passport, an ESTA (visa waiver) for the USA is a strict requirement when travelling to or flying through the USA.
Once a USA ESTA visa waiver is issued it is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner) and will allow multiple entries into the USA.

Canada
If transiting via Canada on the way to the USA, Australian and New Zealand passport holders must apply for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Canada by air. An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA. If you arrive in Canada by train, bus, or boat, you don’t need a visa or eTA, but you do need to bring the right travel documents.

Hong Kong, China

In the event the tour package you have purchased is unable to proceed, and/or a travel Supplier is unable to fulfil the tour due to external circumstances (Limitation of Liability e.g. a Force Majeure event), there may be a fee or amount of money that is withheld by our Suppliers and is unrecoverable. This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. If refunds are not available from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. In the event we are unable to obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee.
