Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
South Africa:
South Africa enjoys a sunny climate, with the summer months (October to April) characterised by hot days followed by afternoon thundershowers and cool evenings, and the winter months (May to September) by dry, sunny days followed by cold nights. Temperatures are usually fairly mild, with an average maximum daytime temperature in January of 25.6°C, dropping to an average maximum of around 16°C in June.

Botswana:
Botswana experiences a subtropical desert climate characterised by great variations in temperature and minimal rainfall. The country has two main seasons: a dry season that includes winter and a wet season during the summer months.
Dry Season (April to October): This season includes the winter months (June to August) where the weather is generally dry and cool, particularly during the day, with cold nights. Early mornings can sometimes see temperatures near freezing. From September onwards, temperatures start rising significantly.
Wet Season (November to March): The summer months are marked by hot temperatures and occasional rainfall. Rain usually comes in the form of heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening. Humidity can be higher, and daytime temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F), particularly in the northern regions.

Namibia:
Namibia features a predominantly desert and semi-arid climate, which leads to sharp temperature fluctuations and generally low rainfall across most of the country. Its weather can be broken down into two main seasons: the wet season and the dry season.
Wet Season (November to April): During these months, Namibia experiences its summer, which brings warmer temperatures and occasional rainfall. The rain, when it occurs, is usually in the form of brief, intense thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon or evening. This season sees the highest temperatures, often climbing above 30°C (86°F), with humidity levels rising in conjunction with the rains. The northern regions receive more rainfall than the arid south.
Dry Season (May to October): Winter in Namibia is marked by very dry and cool conditions. Daytime temperatures are mild, making this a comfortable time to visit, but nights can be cold, occasionally dropping to freezing, especially in the desert areas and during the earlier winter months. This season offers clear skies and minimal precipitation across the country.

Visas

South Africa, Namibia & Botswana
A tourist visa is not required for Australians travelling to South Africa or Botswana.

Zimbabwe:
Passengers travelling on an Australian or New Zealand passport entering Zimbabwe for tourism purposes are required to pay for a double entry, 30-day KAZA visa on point of entry into Victoria Falls and costs $50 USD (approximately $70 AUD - subject to change). This visa will cover Zimbabwe and can be paid on arrival. Please bring the exact amount in USD cash.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
