Day 11 Nanortalik, Greenland

(Tendered from 10:30 to 19:00)

As the largest island in the world, Greenland is a hulking landmass almost entirely covered in ice and only conveniently accessible by air from either Denmark or Iceland. Luckily, it's also accessible by ship, making cruises to Nanortalik one of the best ways to experience the ancient and rugged island.

Nanortalik, the southernmost town in Greenland, is known among locals for its stunning fjords, mountainscapes, traditional handmade crafts and Nordic history. Nanortalik literally means 'the place with polar bears', and while the chances of seeing a polar bear are relatively slim, it's always good to have your camera ready. One of the best things to do here is explore the Tasermiut Fjord which is surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks. The truly adventurous can climb the sheer rock faces springing up from the water or go kayaking on the fjord itself. The Qinngua Valley is also a must-visit as it is the only natural forest in Greenland.

You can then visit the quaint Qaqortoq Museum, housed in the town's oldest building, from here you can also kayak among the fjords around the city or hike along the nearby mountain-rimmed Lake Tasersuaq.

Take a stroll around the old harbour with its wooden homes and fantastic views of the Nuuk fjord before admiring the street art, sculptures and avant-garde architecture. You'll notice that the Katuaq Cultural Centre has a spectacular wooden "screen" that's meant to symbolise the northern lights. While you're here you can sample some traditional dishes such as nipisa suaat, Greenland's intense umami-rich signature caviar, or browse for a warm outfit at local boutiques like the family-owned Qiviut.

Visas

United States of America

Australian passport holders must obtain an “ESTA” visa waiver in order to enter or transit in the United States.

Please note: You may be required to obtain a visa if you do not meet the eligibility requirements of the ESTA program. Please see https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov for full eligibility requirements and applications.

Canada
If transiting via Canada on the way to the USA, Australian and New Zealand passport holders must apply for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Canada by air. An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA.
If you arrive in Canada by train, bus, or boat, you don’t need a visa or eTA, but you do need to bring the right travel documents.

Greenland
Australian passport holders are not required to obtain a tourist visa for a stay of less than 90 days.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected.
