Day 22 Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

Tendered: 7:00 to 18:30

Commune with the roughly 2,000 intrepid souls who call this remote former whaling outpost home. The Falklands long served as a way station for ships, particularly whalers, bound to and from Cape Horn. The islands' rigorous environment is immediately apparent: Stanley Harbour is dotted with the hulks of vessels that succumbed to the fierce winds and waves of the South Atlantic. While their strategic location led to important roles in both World Wars, the islands are best remembered as the cause of the 1982 war between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Today, travellers increasingly journey to the islands to view their rich assortment of bird and marine life.

Colourful houses occupy the low rolling moorland bordering Stanley Harbour. Stanley's climate resembles London's - cool and rainy though summer visitors are often blessed with clear, sunny skies.

Note: Stanley is an anchorage port. Guests transfer to shore via ship's tender. As you hike through the rocky, windswept landscape you may observe a few of the island’s flightless residents - including Magellan penguins burrowing underground, and rockhoppers carefully observing you from outcroppings.

Day 4 Cusco - City Tour

Today you will enjoy a guided tour of beautiful Cusco. First head to the wonderful Koricancha, next door to Santo Domingo Church. The Koricancha was the most sacred and most important temple in the Inca Empire. Its walls were covered with gold, and life-size statues of plants and animals – all made of pure gold and silver. Sadly, this wealth was stripped out by the Spanish conquistadors.

Next head to Cusco Cathedral, located on the Plaza de Armas. Built between 1560 and 1654 on top of the foundations of an existing Inca temple, this spectacular cathedral houses many works of art by the Cusco School of painters, and its main altar and pulpit are covered in gold and silver relief work.

The next stop is the imposing Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, which sits on a hill above Cusco. See some of the finest examples of Inca stonework and construction, including massive rocks that were carefully cut and perfectly fitted together to form the walls. From here you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of Cusco. After exploring Sacsayhuaman, head up the hill to the Tambomachay Archeological Complex. The exact purpose of this site is unknown, but it may have functioned, at least in part, as an Inca spa.

After the tour you will be returned to the hotel where you will enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 5 Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a beautiful area located north of Cusco. Also called the Urubamba Valley, it extends from Pisac to Ollantaytambo, its course irrigated by the Urubamba River. Civilizations have inhabited this valley since at least 800 BC, when the Chanapata civilization arrived here to make use of the rich soil. Today you will embark on a full-day tour to discover the fascinating archaeological sites of civilizations past.

Leaving Cusco, pass through the Abra de Corao and head into the mountains before descending about 450 metres to the bottom of the valley. Here you will explore the colourful traditional markets in Pisac before heading to the archaeological site, where you will explore the extensive ruins and enjoy beautiful views of the valley. Afterwards, stop in Urubamba for lunch before heading to the Inca town of Ollantaytambo which was the royal estate of the Inca emperor Pachacuti, who conquered the region and built the town and a ceremonial centre. Visit the amazing Temple of the Sun, carved and polished by Inca master stonemasons. Walking towards the town square, you will have great views of the ruins above us, as well as the Inca granaries and warehouses built into the surrounding mountain slopes. After Ollantaytambo, head to Chinchero, where you will visit the famous church and the huge Inca stone wall in the main square, which has ten trapezoidal niches. The people of Chinchero are very connected to the old traditions, and many still dress in colourful clothing that combines indigenous and Spanish influences. After a day of exploration, you'll return to Cusco for the evening.

Aguas Calientes is the gateway to Machu Picchu, sitting in a deep gorge at the foot of the mountain on which Machu Picchu stands. It is a beautiful town that mixes traditional life with a huge tourist infrastructure, with a multitude of markets, souvenir shops, hotels and restaurants. It's also largely closed to traffic, making it a fun place to explore on foot. Aguas Calientes is surrounded by jungle-covered mountains and cliffs, and the Urubamba River flows right by the town. Aguas Calientes is also surrounded by hot springs, so you will have plenty of time to relax and enjoy a dip in one of the steaming natural springs. Day 29 Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER

Tour Guide:

Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:

An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES

Climate

Itinerary 1

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, has a temperate climate, which is classified as a humid subtropical climate under the Köppen climate classification with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms while winters are cool and drier with frosts that occurs on average twice per year. Spring and fall are transition seasons characterised by changeable weather.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio has a tropical savanna climate that closely borders a tropical monsoon climate according to the Köppen climate classification, and is often characterised by long periods of heavy rain between December and March. In inland areas of the city, temperatures above 40°C are common during the summer, though rarely for long periods, while maximum temperatures above 27°C can occur on a monthly basis.

Antarctica

December and January are one of the most popular and warmest months to visit Antarctica. There are 24 hours of daylight, so you’ll be able to enjoy amazing views of Antarctica at any time. Average temperatures are approximately -1˚C to 0˚C.

Itinerary 2:

Lima, Peru

Lima experiences a mild and arid climate with relatively stable temperatures throughout the year. In December, which is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, you can expect day time temperatures between 24 to 28 degrees and nighttime temperatures from 17 to 20 degrees. Lima's climate is characterised by high humidity and overcast conditions during the summer months, as it is under the influence of the cold Humboldt Current, which cools the coastal air. Rainfall is minimal in Lima throughout the year, and December is no exception, making it a relatively dry month.

Aguas Calientes, Peru

Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, is the gateway town to Machu Picchu. It is situated at a lower elevation than Machu Picchu itself and has a warmer and more tropical climate. In December, you can expect daytime temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees and night time temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees. Aguas Calientes has a more consistent and pleasant climate compared to Machu Picchu, which is at a higher elevation and experiences cooler temperatures.

Average Temperatures

Antarctic Peninsula: 1°C

Falkland Islands: 8°C

Visas

Brazil

Australian passport holders are required to obtain a visa to enter Brazil. For more information, contact an embassy or consulate of Brazil for details about visas, currency and customs. Further information can be found here.

You can stay in Brazil for 90 days over a 12-month period. This will be counted from the date of your first entry to Brazil. You can also extend your stay for another 90 days.

In other cases, apply for your visa through an embassy or consulate of Brazil.

Argentina

As a tourist, you can stay for up to 90 days without a visa, but you'll need evidence that you intend to depart the country within the 90 days, for example:

  • a return or onward ticket
  • a valid passport
  • travel/medical insurance

Officials may also ask for proof of accommodation and evidence that you have enough money or a credit card to cover your trip.

Chile
If your travel includes transiting through Chile, you should contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Chile to confirm if you'll need a visa. If you transit in Chile without a visa and miss your connecting flight, you won’t be able to pass the immigration point. You'll be required to remain airside and not leave the airport until a new onward flight has been arranged. Australians have previously been required to remain airside for several days due to missed flight connections.

Peru (Itinerary 2)

Tourists don't need a visa. You can get a permit to stay for up to 3 months when you arrive.

You may need a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Peru. Some airlines may want to see one when you leave.

If you've visited Peru in the previous 6 days, you'll need a valid certificate to enter Australia.

Find out about returning to Australia after exposure to yellow fever. Visit the Smart Traveller website for information: https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/americas/peru

United States -Transit Flights, Arrive Early & Stay Behind

If travelling on an Australian passport, an ESTA (Visa Waiver) for the USA is a strict requirement when travelling to or flying through the USA. Once a USA ESTA Visa Waiver is issued it is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner) and will allow multiple entries into the USA.

For information on ESTA eligibility or to apply, please visit: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

Please note: Due to recent changes in the USA Immigration policies, TripADeal recommends all travellers visit US Customs & Border Protection.

Important:

• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.

• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.

Please note:

• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.

• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for Visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it’s important to ensure you’re adequately protected. For more information or advice visit https://www.tripadeal.com.au/travel-insurance
