Day 2 Lima sightseeing (am), then fly to Cusco

After breakfast, enjoy a guided city tour visiting key sites of Lima. First up, see Huaca Pucllana, a huge archaeological site in Miraflores, one of Lima’s most popular districts. Huaca Pucllana was an important ceremonial and administrative centre built by the Lima culture, a pre-Incan indigenous coastal civilisation that developed along this part of the Peruvian coast between 200 AD and 700 AD. This sacred place was built from seven staggered platforms surrounded by a plaza and large walls.

Next, drive to the historic centre of Lima, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. See the beautiful Plaza de Armas (Lima’s main square) which is surrounded by impressive colonial and Republican-era buildings. Some of Peru’s most important buildings surround the square, including the Government Palace, Cathedral of Lima, Archbishop’s Palace of Lima, the Municipal Palace and the Palace of the Union.

After the tour, you will be transferred to the airport for your afternoon flight to Cusco.

Overnight: San Agustin International or Taypikala Hotel (or similar)
Meals included: Breakfast
Day 3 Cusco (free day)

Today is yours to enjoy beautiful Cusco at leisure. You might like to visit the wonderful Koricancha, next door to Santo Domingo Church. The Koricancha was the most sacred and most important temple in the Incan Empire. Its walls were covered with gold, and life-size statues of plants and animals – all made of pure gold and silver. Sadly, this wealth was stripped out by the Spanish conquistadors.

Next, you could head to Cusco Cathedral, located on the Plaza de Armas. Built between 1560 and 1654 on top of the foundations of an existing Inca temple, this spectacular cathedral houses many works of art by the Cusco School of painters, and its main altar and pulpit are covered in gold and silver relief work.

Another stop could be the imposing Incan fortress of Sacsayhuaman, which sits on a hill above Cusco. See some of the finest examples of Inca stonework and construction, including massive rocks that were carefully cut and perfectly fitted together to form the walls. From here you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of Cusco. After exploring Sacsayhuaman, head up the hill to the Tambomachay Archeological Complex. The exact purpose of this site is unknown, but it may have functioned, at least in part, as an Incan spa.

Overnight: San Agustin International or Taypikala Hotel (or similar)
Meals included: Breakfast
Day 4 Cusco to Ollaytaytambo and Train to Aguas Caliente

Following breakfast this morning, transfer to Ollantaytambo train station (approx. 30 min) and board a train bound for Aguas Calientes, a beautiful thermal town down the valley from the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu. Enjoy some truly majestic views during the train journey (approx 1 hour 40 min), before arriving in Aguas Calientes.

Overnight: Inti Punku Machu Picchu Hotel (or similar)
Meals included: Breakfast
Day 5 Machu Picchu

After breakfast, hop on the bus to Machu Picchu (approx. 20 minutes) and enter the Citadel and begin a guided walking tour (approx. 2 hours), learning about the history of the area and the 15th-century ruins. See the House of the Guardian, Intihuatana, Temple of the Sun, Sacred Plaza and other key locations as you walk around, all the while enjoying spectacular views across the agricultural terraces, surrounding mountains and plunging gorges.

Enjoy some free time afterwards to explore this once-forgotten city at leisure. In the afternoon, transfer to the hotel in Aguas Calientes and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Inti Punku Machu Picchu Hotel (or similar)
Meals included: Breakfast
Day 6 Train to Ollaytaytambo and on to Cusco

Enjoy your hotel breakfast and meet at the train station to board the train to the town of Poray (approx. 3 hours). Here you will be met and transferred to Cusco (approx. 1 hour) and travel onwards to the hotel for an evening at leisure in this magical city.

Overnight: San Agustin International or Taypikala Hotel (or similar)

Other important information

LAS VEGAS RESORT FEE
In recent years, most Las Vegas hotels have implemented “resort fees.” These daily supplementary charges are not included in the initial booking cost (when booked through the hotel website or via a third party). The fees are due to the hotel at the end of the stay. In other words, you pay resort fees upon check out. In return, these supplementary fees allow you access to some of the services within the facility and nearby such as in-room wifi, unlimited local and toll-free calls, fitness centre access, a discount shopping coupon books etc. Please note fees differ between hotels and are subject to change. Approx $30 - $40 USD per room per night.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however, they are not required to have specific knowledge of art, architecture, or history. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when particularly required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
