Includes quality accommodation & tour leader

Outback. Just one word is all it takes to send your imagination into overdrive, conjuring images of parched landscapes, endless sheep stations, and ancient cliffs that plunge away into forgotten gorges. Although Uluru usually springs to mind, Queensland has its very own Red Centre too. And it’s more accessible than many realise. Departing from Brisbane, this 12 day tour will showcase it all!

Winton, Roma, Longreach, Mt Isa and more - this is the true Queensland outback on a plate. Along the way you’ll discover outback icons, hidden gems and scenic national parks, together with remote communities home to a colourful mix of characters. Visit the Cobb+Co Museum in Toowoomba, take in the Qantas Museum and Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Longreach, and step back to a time when giants roamed the earth at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum in Winton. Feel the ancient power of Carnarvon Gorge, breathe in the sunset over the Gulf of Carpentaria at Karumba, and explore the world’s longest lava tube cave system at Undara Volcanic National Park before finishing the incredible tour in Cairns - gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Sound like fun?

This sensational small group tour includes 11 nights accommodation, coach transport and more.

This morning depart early en route to Toowoomba, situated on the crest of the Great Dividing Range. Enjoy a tour of this strong regional city and visit the Cobb+Co Museum. Afterwards drive through the rich and fertile plains of the Darling Downs before visiting Dalby, home to the largest grain receival depot in Queensland.

Overnight: Miles Outback Motel, Starline Motel Inn, Swagsman Motel, Western Downs Motor Inn or similar

Drive to Roma and visit The Big Rig – Oil Patch Museum to discover the unique history of how and where the Australian oil and gas industry originated. Then continue north into Carnarvon National Park and spend the next two nights exploring this spectacular area.

Overnight: Takarakka Bush Resort, Carnarvon Gorge Wilderness Lodge or similar

An oasis in the heart of Queensland, Carnarvon National Park is characterised by towering white sandstone cliffs and pockets of rainforest. Well-known for its abundance of wildlife, the Park is home to over 180 species of birds, 90 reptiles, 22 frog species and six species of gliders. It’s also a refuge for Australia’s two monotremes, the platypus and echidna.

There are numerous guided walks available in the Park depending on your level of fitness. Your guides will help you choose the walk that’s right for you. Spot an elusive platypus on a gentle nature trail or, for the more seasoned walkers, head up the gorge to Moss Garden where water seeping out of the limestone supports a lush carpet of mosses and ferns This afternoon there is also the opportunity for scenic helicopter flights to be taken over the park (not included).

Alternatively, relax in your safari cabin and soak up the ambience of this unique environment.

Overnight: Takarakka Bush Resort, Carnarvon Gorge Wilderness Lodge or similar

This morning visit Fairbairn Dam and Lake Mooraboon, the holding dam for the local irrigation area and a popular fishing spot. Then head further west on the Capricorn Highway to the small townships of Alpha and Jericho before visiting the Tree of Knowledge Barcaldine, known as the birthplace of the Australian Labour Party. Passing through the historic little town of Ilfracombe, arrive into Longreach late this afternoon.

Overnight: Abajaz Motor Inn, Longreach Motor Inn or similar

Longreach is one of Queensland’s most prosperous regions. Today visit the Qantas Founders Museum which houses a Boeing 747 and the airline’s first 707. Enjoy a tour inside both aircraft and wander through the exceptional museum before visiting the famous Stockman’s Hall of Fame, which pays tribute to pioneers of the Australian outback. The centre is also dedicated to Australian stockmen who have shown bravery and courage.

Overnight: Abajaz Motor Inn, Longreach Motor Inn or similar

Head for Winton, stopping along the way to visit the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum. Enjoy a guided tour before arriving in Winton, a town with a rich history and links to the Great Shearer’s Strike, Qantas and Waltzing Matilda. Then continue onto Mount Isa.

Overnight: Copper Gate Motel, Townview Motel, ICON on Isa, Fourth Avenue Motel Inn or similar

Mt. Isa began as a mining town following the discovery of substantial deposits of lead in 1923. It is now one of the world’s top 10 producers of copper, silver, lead and zinc. Enjoy a town tour before visiting the ‘Outback at Isa’ centre where we take an underground tour of the Hard Times Mine. Afterwards, we visit the unique Riversleigh Centre which interprets the World Heritage listed fossil sites at Riversleigh. *Please note: the Gulflander Train journey is subject to availability. The timetable is determined by Queensland Rail, and we cannot guarantee that it will operate.

Overnight: Undara Experience Accommodation or similar

Today a local Savannah guide will take us on a tour through the lava tube cave system. Created when the Undara Volcano erupted over 190,000 years ago, the lava that poured out was enough to fill Sydney Harbour three times over. The lava flows lasted a long time, which allowed the outer edge to cool while the interior kept flowing, creating the tubes seen today. Afterwards, begin the final leg of our journey to Cairns and arrive at the hotel to check in.

Overnight: Queens Court, Palm Royale or similar

This morning check out of the hotel and make your own onwards travel arrangements.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides in each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however, they are not required to have specific knowledge on art, architecture, or history. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when particularly required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

COACH TOUR
