Kia Ora and welcome to Queenstown, an iconic resort town framed by snow-capped mountains that rise out of a deep glacial lake. Hailed as the adventure capital of New Zealand, it’s a town where hot air balloons before breakfast, jet boats after lunch, and an afternoon spent zipping down the luge are just another day. The scenery and the nearby wineries are sensational.

At the airport head to collect your rental car, before departing to your accommodation at the Heritage Queenstown which has awe-inspiring views of the Remarkables mountain range. Crafted from centuries-old schist stone and cedar, this sophisticated yet cosy Queenstown hotel is the perfect place to start your adventure. The evening is yours to explore at leisure.

Overnight: Heritage Hotel, Queenstown
Meals included: None

This morning, jump into your rental car for a day of adventure!

The first stop is Glenorchy, a small settlement at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu in the South Island region of Otago. Glenorchy is surrounded by snowy mountains and beech forests and has provided the backdrop for many films, including The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies.

For the adventurous, a great option is to experience the Dart River Safari, which will truly take you off the beaten track. Or, for a more relaxing time, park yourself at a cafe and soak up the stunning surrounds. On fair weather days, you can spot Mount Earnslaw, namesake of the famous TSS Earnslaw steam boat, a towering peak that rises 2,800 metres out of the Southern Alps.

Once you have enjoyed everything this stunning place has to offer, drive back to Queenstown for the evening.

Overnight: Heritage Hotel, Queenstown
Meals included: None

This morning you will be picked up for an unforgettable Milford Sound experience. The road to Milford Sound is as much a scenic experience as the fiord itself, so make sure you have your camera ready. There will be photo stops and short walks along this incredible route.

Once in Milford you will join the original Nature Cruise to explore the 8th wonder of the world. This cruise will get you so close to this famous fiord you can almost reach out and touch the sheer rock walls. There will be plenty of opportunities to view amazing geology and occasional wildlife.

Coach and Nature Cruise including prepared picnic lunch (vegetarian and vegan alternatives are available but must be pre-booked directly with tour operator).

Note: A selection of snacks and a fully licensed bar are available on board the cruise (not included - credit card or cash only).

Due to the changeable nature of weather in Milford Sound, it is a good idea to bring a waterproof jacket, warm clothing and to wear comfortable shoes.

For the ultimate experience why not upgrade your return journey to either a scenic flight or scenic Heli experience. Returning by air, you will enjoy amazing views of the mountains and valleys of the Southern Alps and Fiordland National Park. This option is available for purchase at checkout.

Overnight: Heritage Hotel, Queenstown
Meals included: Lunch

After a big day yesterday, you may like to enjoy a leisurely morning walk around the Queenstown trails including the Queenstown Gardens located on the edge of Lake Wakatipu.

Wakatipu means ‘the trough of the Giant’ and the lake is so named because of the Maori Legend about how this lake came to exist. A fearsome Giant kidnapped a woman, the love of a man named Matakauri. Matakauri fearlessly retrieved her and then killed the Giant with a great fire. The Giant was gone, but the indentation in the ground from his huge body remained. When the rains came, they filled this newly formed valley with water, creating Lake Wakatipu. Though the Giant has been dead for many years, look closely, and you will see the steady rise and fall of his heartbeat on the Lake.

In the afternoon, you could take a trip up the Gondola (not included), where you be treated to breathtaking views of Lake Wakatipu, stretching out to Kingston, flanked by the Remarkables Mountains. A highlight for many is the luge, which is suitable for all ages - just try not to have too much fun! If relaxation is what you are after popular option is the Onsen Hot pools (not included), where you can indulge in a relaxing soak whilst taking in the panoramic views from your tub.

Tonight is your last night in Queenstown. Take an evening stroll along the lakefront and before heading out for dinner.

Overnight: Heritage Hotel, Queenstown
Meals included: None

Today, drive to the historic gold mining town of Arrowtown, a delightful gold rush village that surrounds the sparkling Arrow River. Enjoy your morning strolling through this charming town and indulge in a hot chocolate or mulled wine while you take in the scenery. If you would like to get the heart pumping, we recommend the Arrow River trail which is an easy 50 minute return walk to the Arrow Bridge where you’ll view picturesque waterfalls and views of the pristine Arrow River.

Next stop, head up and over the stunning Crown Ranges which rise 1000 metres above sea level. Then wind your way down through the Cardrona Valley and stop at the famous Cardrona Pub for some ‘après ski’ (minus the ski) with your included Food and Beverage Voucher.

Once you have enjoyed the delicious food that this historic Pub has to offer, drive back to Wanaka. Do not miss the world-famous Bra Fence (or Bradrona as it has been branded), which is a quirky tourist attraction for charity where you can enjoy beautiful views and perhaps even leave an under-garment of your own, if you are so inclined.

Overnight: Distinction Wanaka Serviced Apartments
Meals included: None

You will want to take the morning to explore the groovy galleries, specialist shops and cool cafes in Wanaka. Wanaka is a popular destination because of its stunning Lake and Mountain Views. When you’re ready, it’s recommended to drive past the edge of Lake Wanaka towards the Rob Roy Glacier. The Rob Roy track is an easy walk into a dramatic alpine landscape. It is important to note that weather in this area can be unpredictable and alpine conditions can arrive at any time of year – take appropriate clothing, and check weather and road conditions before you go.

An ideal location for an afternoon culinary experience is the Rippon Vineyard (not included). The land upon which the Rippon Winery stands has been in the Mills family since 1912. All Rippon wines are produced from the single vineyard on the shores of Lake Wanaka. Sample their startling wines at the cellar door or have something more substantial if their Chef’s Table pop-up restaurant is in operation.

Overnight: Distinction Wanaka Serviced Apartments
Meals included: None

All good things must come to an end. Enjoy a breakfast at your leisure before checking out of your hotel in Wanaka and driving back to Queenstown. We highly recommend making your way back via Cromwell, the stone-fruit capital of Aotearoa. You can stop and sample some delicious fresh fruits, nuts and honey at Mrs Jones’ Fruit Stall before making your way back to the Airport to drop off your rental car.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER

Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides in each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however, they are not required to have specific knowledge on art, architecture, or history. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when particularly required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
