Atiu’s rugged and upraised limestone plateau is riddled with caves, some extending from the middle of the island, running underground below the coral plateau and under the ocean floor. Some caves were also used as burial sites before the missionaries arrived. The most popular of all the caves on the island is the Anatakitaki Cave, home to the endangered also known as the Atiu Swiftlet or Aerodramus sawtelli - and can only be found on Atiu Island.

The trek to the cave entrance is exciting and can be a little challenging. You will walk roughly 30 minutes over rugged coral and limestone terrain before you come to the entrance of the cave. The path is lined with interesting Coral formations & many fossilised shells embedded in the limestone structures. Some of the fossils along the track date back to over 120 thousand years.
