8 Day Rottnest & Margaret River

  • Smile with the quokkas on Rottnest Island
  • Visit Margaret River, Busselton & Yallingup
Enjoy free time in Perth & Fremantle

Quokkas! Need we say more? Ok, perhaps we should elaborate a little further. Western Australia’s great south west is home to some pretty incredible landscapes, from scenic Rottnest Island just off the coast of Perth to the rolling vineyards of the Margaret River wine region. This eight day tour combines both of those in one trip, together with free time in vibrant Perth and Fremantle.

Begin with a ferry ride from Hillary’s Boat Harbour to Rottnest Island, enjoying free time to relax on its pristine white beaches, snap a photo or ten with the adorable resident quokkas, or perhaps do as the locals do and explore the island by bicycle. Then, you’ll journey south to the stellar Margaret River wine region via Busselton, Yallingup, and the laid-back town of Dunsborough. Stunning lookouts, rocky beaches, and impressive jetties are just the beginning. In Margaret River you’ll get to walk highlight sections of the famous ‘Cape to Cape Trek’, along with some indulgent visits to local wineries and gourmet producers. Returning to Perth, you’ll also enjoy a couple of nights at leisure in the grand port city of Fremantle - known for its convict history, beaches and sensational market.

This amazing southwest odyssey includes seven nights accommodation, transport by A/C vehicles, six meals, and tour leader from days three to six. The only thing that’d make it better is you!

ITINERARY

Show All Info

Make your own way to Perth for an early afternoon check-in to the centrally located hotel. Enjoy the evening at leisure to experience some of the many highlights of Perth.

Overnight: Novotel Perth Langley, Perth
Meals included: None

This morning head out to Rottnest Island for the day. You will be picked up from the Pan Pacific hotel (just across the road from your accommodation at the Novotel Perth Langley) at approx. 8am and transferred by bus to Hillary Boat Harbour, where you will board the ferry and head out into the Indian Ocean and island paradise of Rottnest. 'Rotto' – or Wadjemup to the Noongar Aboriginal people – has long been the go-to destination for Perth families on holiday, and a coming-of-age promised land for local teens. Although it's only about 19km offshore from Fremantle, this car-free, off-the-grid slice of paradise, ringed by secluded beaches and bays, feels a million miles away. Snap a Quokka selfie, swim in one of the many beautiful bays, or cycle around the island before returning to the mainland by ferry for an evening at leisure in Perth.

Overnight: Novotel Perth Langley, Perth
Meals included: None

This morning, be picked up from the hotel for a tour south towards Margaret River. First stop of the day will be Busselton Jetty. Busselton is a city known for its laid-back vibe, sheltered beach and seasonal humpback whale populations. The beachfront features the 19th-century Busselton Jetty which stretches nearly 2km out to the sea, where on a clear day you can view the coral reef below.

After Busselton, travel onwards to the coastal town of Dunsborough for some quick sightseeing; followed by Meelup Beach, one of the most photographed beaches in Western Australia; Sugarloaf Rock Lookout to view this impressive rock/island; and Canal Rocks just south of Yallingup, where you can enjoy a short walking tour before arriving into Margaret River in the afternoon. Enjoy dinner in the evening with your travel companions at the Margaret River Motel.

Overnight: Margaret River Motel, Margaret River
Meals included: Lunch;Dinner

Today is all about nature. Whilst the Margaret River region is best known for its wineries and gourmet produce, it also boasts a spectacular coastline shaped by the constantly pounding Indian Ocean swell. Think deep red granite headlands, pristine white sand beaches, jagged limestone cliffs and turquoise water.

Today use the famous Cape to Cape walk trail to access some of the lesser known and most spectacular sites along the coast. While the walk is not hugely demanding in the physical sense, there will be some walking on uneven surfaces for up to an hour or so at a time. Along the way stand on top of the Wilyabrup sea cliffs, wander through the tranquil Boranup Karri Forest, and take a (summer) swim in Hamelin Bay. With salt spray in the air, and sand between your toes, your knowledgeable guide will ensure you enjoy a memorable day.

Overnight: Margaret River Motel, Margaret River
Meals included: Breakfast;Lunch

No trip to Margaret River is complete without some time dedicated to wine and indulgence. Enjoy a later start today, with the opportunity to wander into town for a coffee and a look around, pushing our start time out to a more respectable hour.

There are over 100 wineries in Margaret River and we can't (responsibly) visit them all, but we will take you to some of the big names, as well as our favourites. Our must visit list includes Vasse Felix which was the very first winery in Margaret River, and is still considered one of the very best, Leeuwin Estate, the region's most famous winery, as well as some lesser known boutique producers. For the beer lovers, we've got your back, with a stop at the Cheeky Monkey Brewery for lunch (not included) and a refreshing ale, and we won't forget about the chocoholics.

Some of you may not feel like the need for dinner tonight, so we will leave you to your own devices. It is a very short walk into town from the hotel where you can choose anything from 5 star dining to take away.

Overnight: Margaret River Motel, Margaret River
Meals included: Breakfast

After breakfast, depart Margaret River and head out to Ngilgi limestone Cave. This exquisitely decorated cave, with its stunning stalactites, stalagmites, helictites and beautifully coloured shawls, was Western Australia’s first tourist attraction. Transfer onwards to Fremantle where you will spend the next 2 nights at leisure.

Under the baking WA sun, Fremantle is a boho harbour town with a sea-salty soul. Like Valparaiso in Chile or Littleton in New Zealand, old-town ‘Freo’ is a tight nest of streets with an atmospherically faded cache of Victorian and Edwardian buildings. And like any port, the world washes in on the tide and washes out again, leaving the locals buzzing with global zeitgeist. Fremantle thrums with live music, craft-beer bars, boutique hotels, left-field bookshops, Indian Ocean seafood shacks, buskers and beaches – it's a fabulous place to spend a few days.

Overnight: Seashells Fremantle or similar, Fremantle
Meals included: Breakfast

Today is free at leisure to explore the historic city of Fremantle. Notable local highlights include tours of the Fremantle Gaol, Perth’s only World Heritage listed site; iconic Cicerello’s Restaurant for fish and chips overlooking the boats; or the nearby Little Creatures Brewery.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides in each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however they are not required to have specific knowledge on art, architecture, or history. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when particularly required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Margaret River
- Known for its four distinct seasons, the mild Mediterranean climate not only makes Margaret River a premium wine growing region, but also a year round choice for holiday makers.
- In summer, there is little rainfall and the average maximum temperature is just under 30 degrees Celsius. Hot days are usually cooled off with lovely afternoon sea breezes. Summer evenings are balmy to mild with temperatures around 15.5 degrees Celsius.
- Most of the rainfall occurs in the winter, but winter still has plenty of glorious sunny days. Winter enjoys mild temperatures that average 16 to 18 degrees with some days in the early 20’s. Winter evenings are mild and average above 8 degrees Celsius but are still cool enough to enjoy a log fire.
- Spring and autumn are lovely and warm with plenty of sunny days. Each season reveals different aspects to appreciate. In summer the stunning beaches seduce swimmers and kite surfers. In winter, they’re graced with a passing parade of whales. Autumn sees a flurry of arts and wine-inspired events. In spring, the wildflowers put on their own dazzling show.
